Title: Passworded or Not?
Post by: TeaLeaf on July 02, 2008, 07:44:49 AM
When we finish our 'Bravo/Charlie testing period' should we have the COD4 server public and admin the problems away, or keep it password protected?

I'm begining to think the former, but wanted opinions.

TL.

If you want the CoD4 server to take off we really need to think in a similar way as to MH and Boomer. I would suggest starting with it off and see how it goes. Then considering adding a second server or PW protecting the one we have if there is a large enough user base.

Do we want the Alphas to have a chance first before the great unwashed join or do we, as TL put it, Admin the problems away?

I'd like the Alphas to feel included so, my 2c, leave it passworded and open it up to Alphas for more testing. I suggest we do this on Saturday.

:withstupid:

Cod4 is a sucess with a full house on Monday with people waiting to get onto the server, so if you was to open it to the general public, and it does become popular, then i think you would have to consider getting a second server with Password protection which will in turn get the new players to sign up to the forums like CSS has.

Just because we have had a full server does not make it a success. We are creating something that will require weeks of playtesting. We are fortunate to have a wealth of experience with CS to call upon to accelerate the process but it will still take time.

Do we actually need the great unwashed? Think not.

Well, I have to disagree with you there. Boomer have been a good recruiting ground for CSS and the community in general. There have been many great new additions to the member front through Boomer. Jabbs to name one.

I think one problem we could have with PW is that we don't get enough players on it (except for Mondays). See what happened to BF2. If there are enough admins about I see no reason why we shouldn't be able to handle a public server. Works on Boomer. The only benefit with having it PW protected "should" be that it would require less work for admins.

Another problem I see with having it PW protected is that the recruiting will be from the community i.e. CSS. I don't want CSS to be suffering because CoD4 recruits from the CSS ranks.

I would like to see how HQ runs before we open it up anymore. Then lets get the alphas included.

Once we all know how to play, then we can open the doors and maybe just pw'ing on a monday night.

Surely this is a community? People will play the game they want to play. Its not about CSS versus CoD versus Wow or anything else for that matter.

How about opening up HQ this weekend or is that too early?

Did I say it wasn't a community? I thought I just pointed out that it was. Where do you think the new players will come from? It is quite clear that it isn't the old BF2 that fills the CoD4 server but mostly CSS players. Some BF2ers haven't even bought CoD4. I don't mind people playing the game they wan't. However, it is quite clear to me at least that the main recruiting ground for this type of game is through CSS and not WoW and LFS. Especially if we keep it pw protected. The new players still needs to become alpha somehow don't they? Why should mainly the CSS part of the community pull the weight for recruitment to CoD4 and the CoD4 part none?

If CoD4 is the strong game then it should manage to stand on its own feet. Why not build CoD4 in a similar way as CSS? We know it works. Whitey have shown the way. By pw protecting it there is no chance for any outsiders to just joining a game as on boomer and take part in our style of play.

That is what I tried to get a across in my previous message. I hope I made my point clearer now. Whatever Armitages decides to do I will support anyway.

This sounds like a good plan, at least to me.

I'd say open to Alphas on a pass then once we have established (we being Arm) how it's going to run, open it public.

Can I say, What brings new people to us. In CSS and LFS is our style of play. Personal I think we need to get established before we open it up to joe public. I would like to get a week of HQ and a week of Sabotage, Then open it to the Alphas.

Then once we have a good idea how to play the game in a dMw style, Then we can open it to the public. If we just open the door now, we will end up just playing like every other server on the net.
