Being a film nut I have been re-seeing Tarkovsky's Stalker (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079944/). It has been remastered into a 3xDVD set (first time for me having to swap DVDs during playback - but it is with the best surround sound I have ever heard and the pic quality is outright awesome!). That said, despite being an IMDb Top 250 movie, most ppl will rip their hair out because the movie is a slow, philosophical journey. I.... love it! (in the words of Frank Drebin)
That finally made me google for the book on which it is based, which is Roadside Picnic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roadside_Picnic), an award winning sci-fi story. From Wiki there are references to a download. Stalker is based on this story, somewhat, but the storyline in the book is cool :flirty::
"
Aliens have visited the Earth, and departed, leaving behind a number of artifacts of their incomprehensibly advanced technology. The places where such artifacts were left behind are areas of great danger, known as "Zones." The Zones are laid out in a pattern which suggests that they resulted from the impact of an influence from space which struck repeatedly from the same direction, striking different places as the Earth rotated on its axis.
A frontier culture arises along the margins of these Zones, peopled by "stalkers" who risk their lives in illegal expeditions to recover these artifacts, which do not obey known physical laws. The one most sought after, the "golden sphere", is rumored to have the power to fulfill the deepest human wishes."
