Dead Men Walking

We are delighted to announce confirmation of the dMw's 14th LAN party:
 
LAN XIV is on 31st October - 2nd November 2008
 
The LAN will open at 10.00am on Friday morning
The LAN will end  on Sunday (time tbc)

Please note that we have a maximum of 40-ish places and these will be allocated on a first    come first served basis.

Booking hierarchy:

 Members of dMw's Charlie Company are given first notice of the booking thread.

Bravo Company & SoG members will be able to see the booking thread a week later

Alpha Company members will be able to see the booking thread a week after that. (Please note that if the LAN is getting full, priority will be given for active Alpha members to sign up for one week before  non-active Alpha's, friends and guests).

 (Please note that international gamers have a dispensation to pre-book so they can book their flights early). They are free to book places now.
 
Please note that the hotel has an 18 years+ booking policy so the minimum age for attending the LAN is 18.

LAN Details:
 
Dates: Friday 31st October, Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd November 2008
Venue: Oliver Cromwell (http://www.olivercromwellhotel.co.uk/), March, Cambridgeshire.
Times: The LAN venue opens at 11.00am Friday morning and the LAN will finish on Sunday (time tbc)

dMw Costs: For the venue - £15 total per head for the whole weekend. Please note that if you fail to show up or give us little notice - a contribution to the LAN funds would still be appreciated (As things such as the amount of the prize fund are determined by the number of sign ups).

Hotel Costs:
Bed & Breakfast Accommodation: double occupancy £33 per person per night, sole occupancy £50 per room per night
Room Availability: 35 x Double; 8 x Twin
 
If you book a Twin Room and want to share the costs of the room then when you post in this thread to confirm your attendance then also make a note of the fact you have a Twin room booked and are looking for someone to share with.
 
As before, the reduced accommodation and function room rates have been negotiated on the basis that the majority of the attendees will partake of the excellent cuisine offered by either the hotel restaurant's Fixed price, A La Carte or Bar menus on the Friday night. JOIN US for the WELCOME DINNER on Friday evening in Ballroom 2 at 7.30pm. WE STRONGLY REQUEST THAT YOU MAKE THE EFFORT TO EAT WITH US ON THE FRIDAY NIGHT.

Note for International Travellers:

The LAN accommodation costs are above, it's cheaper if you agree to share a twin bed (two single beds) room with someone of course.

The LAN venue we charge at £15 per person for the whole weekend.

Other costs: Food and drink - this depends on you. If you're eating dinner in the restaurant it costs around £20-£25 plus drinks. Others prefer to buy sandwiches, get Pizza, kebabs or burgers etc and stick to beer not wine etc.

Travel: Any London airport works well, Stanstead & Luton are closest. Heathrow is ok, Gatwick is further but still doable. If you book your flight tickets we'll try to make sure someone picks you up and takes you back - post on the forums for a lift and you are usually sorted out very quickly as other attending members appreciate the international effort made! Other airports are also a possibility - if in doubt post and we'll see if anyone would be travelling past your airport!

Computer: If you have a shuttle or laptop then you're probably sorted (unless hand luggage rules cause you problems) but if you cannot bring your own PC then post in the LAN section to see if someone is willing to lend you a spare PC for the weekend. Many people have done this in the past and it seems to work well!

I just did, I totally wrecked the car after 1 lap (rolled over once, drifted half the course and hitted some tire towers) When I was halfway on the pit lane, car finnaly gave up (after riding dozens of meters with 50km/h max (dropping fast). I've never done the 'training' element of LFS and I don't know of anyone that has. Just go do laps. You can go online with the demo but be warned, there are idiots in demoland!

Oh and if you can get your hands on a cheap wheel and pedals Lumi, that will let you feel the game. This is where LFS beats the rest. Imagine driving your car with arrow keys in real life, eh?

I think that would make it a lot better, cuz driving with your mouse is utter crap. Driving with keys would seem fun though :P *image of keyboard mixed up with dashboard springs to mind*. I must say that the game is really realistic, bit to much for my taste atm, though I think I might like it after a lot of practise.

Sorry but I have to pull out from this one - timing just won't be feasible for me that weekend anymore.

Just a word of warning. My student loan hasn't gone in yet (it's a few weeks overdue) I've rung them and they said it should be fine, but if it's not in for the LAN I might have money issues. I've booked a double room with Lumi so if someone wants to be on standby incase local government take more than 3 weeks to correct a simple problem.
I'm 99% sure everything will be fine, but if I have to pull out last minute I don't want it to mess up well laid plans.

The reason I mention this is that I know the Crommy is full for the weekend so there's now a double room up from grabs. As someone who's stayed at a different hotel than the lan venue before, let me assure you that if you can be at the lan venue it's much better (especially for the Saturday lock-in)

Ok still no loan. I'm officially pulling out now. I've maxed out my overdraft. There's a chance my loan will go in by the end of the week but I have to work on the assumption that it won't, and I won't be able to pay the fuel, food and donation fees for the weekend. I booked a double room with Lumi, which I won't be able to use. The room is booked in my name and I gave them my card details to hold the room.
If anyone would like to take my place at this short notice they're welcome to it.
I'm sorry Lumi if it ends up being more expensive for the room because of me booking a double. If this is the case I'll make up the difference when I can afford to.
As for a donation I will make that through the paypal donation section as soon as my loan goes in.

I'm sorry guys but I only have a small overdraft that I've maxed out since being back at uni. I had a letter in May saying my loan would go in fine, but it didn't and it's messed up my plans totally. I've had letters since making me think it was going to be a short delay and it's been over a month. I'll try and come to another one at some point when money is less of an issue.

you're still going to need to eat whether it's in March or in Falmouth. You don't have to attend the steak night and can eat on the cheap...hell, I'll even buy you a pizza :D

I'm not sure about the cancellation policy but you need to talk to Lumi asap.

Sorry guys. My fuel bill Swansea -> March and back would be over £60 (Frontera <35mpg), and with the room etc. I'd end up owing a fair bit of money. I'll come to another one. I appreciate all the support and I would be tempted if I wasn't right on my limit finance wise. I'll be making a donation to the server fund and setting things straight with Lumi if they give any trouble with the bill (when the money eventually goes in).

He's (rightly) not saying that he's paying the LAN attendance fees. He's saying he'll make a donation to the server fund.

Donations to the Server Fund are not compulsory (currently) - but they're always welcomed :thumbsup2:
