Title: Search results for deadmen.co.uk
Post by: Jabbs on August 31, 2008, 09:16:32 AM
Search results for deadmen.co.uk (and maybe how we can improve them?)

Searching for "dead men walking" :-

Google (UK)
1. 505,000 results
2. Top result is: www deadmenwalking co uk (I'd rather not give the site more links hence the removal of the dots)
3. When I first searched for 'dead men walking' (yesterday at work) //www.deadmen.co.uk was on page two  Though I've just used a different PC in a different location (home) and we are on page one position 5.

MSN Live Search
Very similar positions although a LOT more results.

Aside note: Is the band Dead Men Walking still active?  Their website says: "bear with, us a new site is on the way !"

What am I on about here and why?

I would love to see results improve so that dMw is number one! I would also like to see more pages in the search results :D

How?

I've had a certain amount of success in the past by some very simple things and I'm sure you guys out there are also pros :D  Gandalf? :flirty:

Aside note: Do a search for Anything IT on Google, you'll notice 53 Million! (yes million results!) and tow of my sites are number ONE and FOUR (you can click here for the search results) (http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&safe=active&rlz=1T4GGIK_enGB278GB278&q=anything+it&start=0&sa=N)

I realise that editing php forum sites to make them good for search engines is tough and I'm not going to suggest doing that (yet).

1. I would like to do some work on my sites, adding some pages about dMw and all that, adding links etc

2. I would also like to suggest we create an html page (or even several) on deadmen.co.uk which would be optimised for the search engines and to which my links would (in part) point.  I would also point to the main forum page (http://www.deadmen.co.uk/forum/) which appears in Google and Live search results.

3. Anyone else have websites out there that they have control of? Personal sites? Perhaps we can all do search engine optimised text with relevant links back to this site? (we can talk more about that later if this idea is a goer).

Anyway, I don't mean to step on anyones toes if you are already actively doing stuff, just my thoughts and suggestions. :narnar:

Catch me on MSN or ICQ if you want to chat about it :D

A classic way to improve your hit statistics are to add the following words to the meta tag: microsoft apple porn xxx :flirty:

Btw Jabbs, I think you just appointed yourself project leader on this one. :roflmao:

I'll leave it up to you guys, just a side note - typing "deadmen" in google (without quotes) leads here on the first link. :D

I've just searched for 'dmw' and as you'd expect we are nowhere to be seen.

As another target I'd like to see better results for using the following:

dmw
dmw clan

dmw gaming website

dead men gaming
dead men gaming website
dead men walking gaming
dead men walking gaming website

dead men walking counter-strike
dead men walking world of warcraft

Some combinations of the above are already good in the results :D

and so on...

Oh by the way, I'll let you know what I'm doing on my sites and what I think everyone here can do to help later.  For now I'm working on the following page.  Perhaps 'Stumbling' that page, adding to your StumbleUpon profile and of course the main deadmen.co.uk page too.

Direct link to the Dead Men article on my personal webby (http://www.jonathanburrows.co.uk/articles/deadmenwalking.php)

When that's finished, put it on wikipedia, then we'll get major hits :P

Why?

Not being funny, but the word "deadmen" on its own is meaningless, and anyone searching for that word in connection with gaming already knows about us.

:withstupid: If im trying to find a gaming community in which to play CSS or Cod4 I might have these sorts of words in my search:

gaming
community
mature
fair
fun
friendly etc.. (Oh and CSS/COD4  ;) )

Are we doing this simply to claim the stop spot or to increase relevant traffic?

I disagree, if you are a random joiner to one of our servers, you might only remember 'dmw' or 'dead men walking' or 'tactical counter-strike' or something similar.

Unfortunately, I can't find our website using your terms Jamoe

My reasons were because I think there could be people out there who might have joined our server or who know 'of' us but can't remember the web address.

Also, maybe it's a good thing to have high results on the search results?  Why not be better placed for searches of 'counter-strike' or similar?

Oh, by the way, in certain searches, you will see this web site ABOVE us? http://www.deadmenwalkingclan.com/dmw/main.html and even this one: http://www.dead-men-walking.de/

Might be best to type it in rather than click it.

Anyway, if you guys are happy the way it is, then fine, I'll drop the topic. l8rs!

You'd probably get links trough wikipedia, if people stumble upon the article, but i don't think wikipedia passes any "link juice" on to site's that it link's too, or atleast I've read that google has been thinking of ignoring wikipedia links to prevent spam abuse.

Btw, do we have a google analytics account linked to the website? I use this all the time and it's a great SEO tool, to see what people found you on, what incomming links you have etc etc.
(if we don't, its super easy to implement)

Personally I wouldn't want the great unwashed trooping through the server. People who want to find us will find us. if we have hordes of people arriving to try us out it will be an admin nightmare.

My 2c :)
