Title: EA's Mercs 2 Publicity stunt...

...gridlocks a small corner of London:

Irresponsible? Probably, but it did what they wanted, it got the name of their game into the papers and such. Free advertising much?

Better or worse that Acclaim's Virtua Tennis 2 publicity stunt at Wimbledon?

Exactly - cost per column inch of press and broadcast media coverage .......... negligible

Below-the-line publicity in action at its best.

Imagine that. You get the residents of the road (small percentage of people) annoyed. A lot of people happy about free fuel. And you get HUGE publicity from being listed on the BBC website.
If everyone you give petrol to buys the game you've made the money back without the BBC exposure. it's very clever advertising.
