Title: Best flicks seen, or revisisted, during 2008
Post by: delanvital on September 11, 2008, 10:27:57 AM
Top 20 best films SEEN or REVISITED, during 2008 (random order)

List, so far...

In Bruges (2008) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0780536/)
Farrell is to my surprise very funny. The dialogue is just completely awesome. Go see it!

Into the Wild (2007) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0758758/)
Beautiful movie. Well acted and directed.

Godfather trilogy (http://www.imdb.com/find?s=all&q=godfather&x=0&y=0)
As always, depth beyond most movies, in a fascinating, intriguing way.

Kung Fu Panda (2008) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0441773/)
r0x0rs

3:10 to Yuma (2007) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0381849/)
Bale and Crowe are great, and Bale as the underdog who has to step up, as much as he can, to try and save his home. Oh, and I am a sucker for westerns.

Rocket Science (2007) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0477078/)
A studdering kid in a speed-talking contest. Well directed.

Dan in Real life (2007) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0480242/)
Steve carrell is to my surprise also funny in the unintentional, downplayed way.

Das Leben der Anderen (2006) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0405094/)
Intense, paranoid, sad. Nice acting and directing. Lovely ending.

The Quiet Earth (1985) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089869/)
Awesome start. Provocative ending. If only the bit in the middle had been better.

Lady Hawke (1985) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089457/)
A classic. Never tires of it.

This is Spinal Tap (1984) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088258/)
Stupidity beyond. Never tires of it.

The Prestige (2006) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0482571/)
Dark, mystic, well acted. Had it figured out though.

Ratatouille (2007) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0382932/)
Funny, perfect. Just sucks you in. Best in a long time. Beats Cars easily.

Stalker (1979) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079944/)
The most beautiful movie in a long time. You just sit there and take it in. Either you like it, or you sleep to it :)

The Weather Man (2005) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0384680/)
Surprisingly awkward movie. Cage is actually good at playing a frustrated, introvert, troubled person. I wonder why

The Pink Panter 1-3 (http://www.imdb.com/find?s=all&q=the+pink+panther&x=0&y=0)
Never tires. Sellers is just the master of total ignorance.

Million Dollar Baby (2004) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0405159/)
The ending brought it up a notch. She acts tons better than the clint.

The Old Man Who Read Love Stories (2001) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0223832/)
Close to falling apart, but holds it together by focusing on the jaguar. Intense scenes, especially when he hides under the log from the crazed jaguar.

Vampyr (1932) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0023649/)
For a movie from '32 the ideas are decades ahead of time. For a silent, the pace is decent. The idea of placing the camera on the dead at the funeral for example.

Das Kabinet Des Dr. Caligari (1920) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0010323/)
Best settings ever. Love the painted shadows and the total lack of straight lines. Like the wicked mind it was supposed to be.

These are mine, so far... what's yours?

In Bruges (2008) (http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0780536/) - as stated above. A dark comedy with stunning dialogue.

Gone Baby Gone (2007) (http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0452623/) - great movie that questions your own moral references of right and wrong

Dark City (Dir Cut, 1998) (http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0118929/) - One of the most underrated Sci-Fi movies. Great in every aspect.

No Country for Old Men (2007) (http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0477348/) - Really good and straightforward story by the Coens.

Flags of our fathers (2006)  (http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0418689/)- Clint Eastwood in his prime.

Babel (2006) (http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0449467/) - Great movie I somehow managed to miss for two years. One of the best movies I have watched in a long time.

Iron Man (2008) (http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0371746/) - Surprisingly good adaptation of one of Marvel's superheroes.

Felon (2008) (http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt1117385/) - Val Kilmer is doing a great performance in this prison drama.

Juno (2007) (http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0467406/) - Great comedy.

Zodiac (2007) (http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0443706/) - One of the best (if not the best) crime movie I have ever seen.

The Man from Earth (http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0756683/) (2007) - Very good intelectual "sci-fi" made on a small budget.

Split Second (http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0105459/) (1992) - Fun action/sci-fi with Rutger Hauer. It has the great line "We need guns! Big ... f**king ... guns!". What not to like. :D

Dark City is wonderful, especially the plot.

Being a Coen bros. fan I was sad that NCFOM did not deliver. I know, many think it did but in my book it fails to tie the whole thing together proper, such as for example Oh Brother or The Big Lebowski.

The Man from Earth has a brilliant story imho, but deserved a bigger budget and better actors.

Split second - I've seen that tons of times. It is really good! Love the shotguns they find after that remark :flirty:

Gone Baby Gone, Juno, Felon and Iron Man added to the must see list :)

Forgot this one

Suspension (2008) (http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0989760/) - interesting "sci-fi/fantasy" about the power to stop time.

No room for the Shawshank Redemption in there?
The Usual Suspects
Run Silent, Run Deep
Hamburger Hill
The Cannonball Run
Police Story

I'd link them all but am out of time..

(I resisted a mention for the 'Pink Panter', that's a different series of movies all together over here Del)

Beautiful movie. Well acted and directed.
I know this isn't the purpose of this thread but I have to comment on the films I've gleaned from here.

Into the wild: Understandable up to a point, then the ending made me mad at him! It's all very well going on a journey of discovery but at least go prepared. The other thing that struck me was, how ugly, Americans have made America! :eyebrow: Yeah I know, we all do it.

Oh dear, I hate the sheer injustice and horror of being convicted of something like that. Everyone of us could find ourselves in the same kind of doo doo. Fortunately the movie moved into the realms of fiction just in time to make it enjoyable. 8/10

Just seen 3.10 to Yuma - I was loving it right upto the end and then I stopped making sense and really disapppointed me.
You can't spend the whole film building up a character to be pure evil only to give him a change of heart at the end....

I agree that the ending is disappointing, but to me, it was mostly the fact that he let his goons shoot on them when they ran to the train, I know for Evans to be the hero, but no need to endanger anyone or anything like that. Maybe that was the only way, I don't know, since he could not explain that to the riders - as he keeps saying, how difficult it is to stay in charge of the gang.

Some good discussions here (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0381849/board/thread/117517407?d=117517407&p=1#117517407)

Now that looks tempting!

The best I have seen on that subject, and here best as a word should probably be watered down, is Guilty by suspicion (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101984/) with De Niro. He plays almost mechanically as always, same facials etc., but it still makes me think of Stasi...
Title: Best flicks seen, or revisisted, during 2008

At the last day in the year I can add the following films:

Oldboy (2003) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0364569/)
"An average man is kidnapped and imprisoned in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. He then is released, equipped with money, a cellphone and expensive clothes. As he strives to explain his imprisonment and get his revenge, he soon finds out that not only his kidnapper has still plans for him, but that those plans will serve as the even worse finale to 15 years of imprisonment"

I like the twist and when the details are revealed, one of the better twists. Note however, that this film has its own approach to "gore" or what you'd like to call it - as fx when the lead guy eats a live squid which really doesn't want to end up in his mouth.

Michael Clayton (2007) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0465538/)
"An attorney known as the Fixer in his law firm comes across the biggest case of his career that could produce disastrous results for those involved"

The movie is average in telling the story, but the acting is excellent - and the plot has some nice twists.

Everything Is Illuminated (2005) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0404030/)
"A young Jewish American man endeavors to find the woman who saved his grandfather during World War II in a Ukrainian village, that was ultimately razed by the Nazis, with the help of a local who speaks weirdly funny broken English"

The awkwardness and strangeness beats the plot, but I could not help but get sucked in. It has a bit of Wes Anderson-funny-apathy-weirdness to it (Royal Tenenbaums, The Darjeeling Ltd, The Life Aquatic, Rushmore)

The Third Man (1949) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0041959/)
"Arriving in Vienna, Holly Martins learns that his friend Harry Lime, who has invited him, recently died in a car accident."

I finally got around to see it. It is brilliant. The directing is outstanding to say the least. The acting by Orson Welles in the circus wheel fx is awesome. Considering this is '49 it is a 10/10.

From 2008 the only two films that stand out in my mind were Gone Baby Gone (best film of last year and one of my now favourite films ever) and The Dark Knight which just speaks for itself really. If you haven't seen gone baby gone or haven't heard of it just go out and watch it, don't read any reviews or look up the plot or anything just go out an watch it, you wont be disappointed.

Haven't seen Blindness (added to list), but watched Seven Pounds...sadly predictable, down to the jellyfish, waste of talent in Will Smith who is a great actor, thought Woody Harrelson was hamming it a bit, nevertheless entertaining.

SPOILER ALERT!!

On the same vein Meteor, Path to Destruction (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1260995/), predictable, but entertaining. I think its a made-for-tv thing. I do like Christopher LLoyd, though he didn't last long.

one of the best films ive ever seen is a german filmed epic (english subtitles)

downfall

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0363163/

quote from imdb
'Der Untergang' (Downfall) is probably the only WW2 movie I've ever seen, which only deals with facts and is utterly deprived of any form of commercialism whatsoever. Bruno Ganz is truly excellent in his role as Adolf Hitler, a tired man who sees his "Reich" fall, but cannot accept it. Overall (type)casting is very good; all the actors chosen to portray a famous/notorious character look a lot like the real deal, especially Goebbels. Although I'm not a fan of long war movies, these 2,5 hours passed very quickly due to excellent acting, great sets, FX and storyline. Somehow, every scene is dripping with underlying tension that never really explodes; a kind of unsettling unbelieved grips you when you see seemingly ordinary people commit astonishing atrocities and sins towards mankind, just for their faith and loyalty to one man, Hitler, who himself walks the edge of reason.

Der Untergang was good. Some tips on other good german movies are

Lola rennt (http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0130827/) (Run Lola Run, 1998) Lola has 20 minutes to gather 100.000DM to save her boyfriend. Run Lola. Run!
Das Experiment (http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0250258/) (The Experiment, 2001) based on a true psychological experiment.
Die Welle  (http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt1063669/)(The Wave, 2008) A teacher try to teach students about autocracy and things start to spin out of control.

Just watched The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.  Fantastic film, absolutely beautiful (shot by Roger Deakins who creates the most beautiful and memorable screen images this side of Terence Malick).  Fantastic acting and a great script.  Bit of a slow pace for some on here I would warrant, but it really shouldn't put off any cinephile.

I like that kind of movies. Added to the list! :D
Title: 2009, round one :)

Here is my list for 2009, so far, of the best new or revisited movies.

A Love Song for Bobby Long (2004) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0369672/) (IMDB: 7.2. Me: 9)
I was not sure about what to expect and was still surprised. Having Travolta and Scarlett Johansson in the cast I expected more mainstream, but it was not. Scarlett is snappy and angry and Travolta snaps back. The dialogue, the acting and the awesome cinematography of New Orleans kept me watching.

Upon hearing of her mother's death, jaded teenage loner Purslane Hominy Will returns to New Orleans for the first time in years, ready to reclaim her childhood home. Expecting to find her late mother's house abandoned, Pursy is shocked to discover that it is inhabited by two of her mother's friends: Bobby Long, a former literature professor, and his young protégé, Lawson Pines. These broken men, whose lives took a wrong turn years before, have been firmly rooted in the dilapidated house for years, encouraged only by Lawson's faltering ambitions to write a novel about Bobby Long's life. Having no intention of leaving, Pursy, Bobby Long and Lawson are all forced to live together. Yet as time passes, their tenuous, makeshift arrangement unearths a series of buried personal secrets that challenges their bonds, and reveals just how inextricably their lives are intertwined.

Starman (1984) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088172/) (IMDB: 6.8. Me: 7)
I haven't seen this as a kid and was afraid of getting disappointed. I wasn't. I enjoyed the plot and Jeff Bridges is extraordinarily good. Predictable, but being a sucker for sci-fi I loved it.

An alien takes the form of a young widow's husband and asks her to drive him from Wisconsin to Arizona. The government tries to stop them

Six String Samurai (1998) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118736/) (IMDB: 6.5. Me: 8)
I stumbled upon this one, on a movie channel (for those that cares, TV2 Film) and was to surprised. Low budget cult movie. The mix of action, swordsplay, guitar duels etc... well words can't really explain it. I reckon you either love it, or hate it.

In a post-apocalyptic world where the Russians have taken over a nuked USA and Elvis is king of Lost Vegas, "Six-String Samurai" chronicles the tale of Buddy, a hero who's a '50s rocker and wandering warrior rolled into one, too-cool package. Armed with his six-string in one hand and his sword in the other, Buddy is on his way to Vegas to succeed Elvis as King. Along the way, he saves an orphan who decides to play tag-along to his rescuer. What follows is the road trip from hell.

Gran Torino (2008) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1205489/) (IMDB: 8.4, Top250 #76. Me: 9)
It aired here in 2009 and I saw it at a pre-screen Clint Eastwood-fan event. I generally enjoy his movies. He is getting better as an actor, but yet the unique story and the nice details is the force.

Disgruntled Korean War vet Walt Kowalski sets out to reform his neighbor, a young Hmong teenager, who tried to steal Kowalski's prized possession: his 1972 Gran Torino.

JCVD (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1130988/) (2008) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1130988/) (IMDB: 7.5. Me: 8)
The Van Damme semi-documentary. I was surprised. By far his best acting yet and he seems very happy to not fight his way out of this. The fighting tour-de-force in the intro really nails the idea of the film though.

Between his tax problems and his legal battle with his wife for the custody of his daughter, these are hard times for the action movie star who finds that even Steven Seagal has pinched a role from him! In JCVD, Jean-Claude Van Damme returns to the country of his birth to seek the peace and tranquility he can no longer enjoy in the United States.

Taken (2008) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0936501/) (IMDB: 7.9. Me: 8)
I had read the plot and the comments and knew this would be the opposite of JVCD. And so it was. The plot has some obvious flaws but for brutal, in your face, determined dad on the loose this rocks. It starts a wee tad slow, but then the pace picks up - and doesn't drop.

A former spy relies on his old skills to save his estranged daughter, who has been forced into the slave trade

Don't Come Knocking (2005) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0377800/) (IMDB: 6.7. Me: 8)
A semi-sequel to Paris, Texas. Not exactly mainstream, but the cinematography is great. Slow pace, mood-focused.

Howard Spence (Sam Shepard (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001731/)) has seen better days. Once a big Western movie star, he now drowns his disgust for his selfish and failed life with alcohol, drugs and young women. If he were to die now, nobody would shed a tear over him, that's the sad truth. Until one day Howard learns that he might have a child somewhere out there. The very idea seems like a ray of hope that his life wasn't all in vain. So he sets out to find that young man or woman. He discovers an entire life that he has missed ...

Eagle vs. Shark (2007) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0494222/) (IMDB: 6.8. Me: 9)
Not exactly mainstream either. Odd personalities. You sit there with a smile on your mug when it's over. Reminds me a bit of that lonely guy movie Steve Martin did some years back, but way better.

Eagle vs Shark is the tale of two socially awkward misfits and the strange ways they try to find love; through revenge on high-school bullies, burgers, and video games.

Il Postino (1994) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110877/) (IMDB: 7.7. Me: 9)
The postman, Massimi Troisi, impressed me, the acting was just great. The context and the rest if well built, but the lead is what carries it. Whether a myth or not, it is an interesting trivia that he postponed heart surgery to complete the film, only to die 12 hours after the cameras stopped roling.

Pablo Neruda, the famous Chilean poet, is exiled to a small island for political reasons. On the island, the unemployed son of a poor fisherman is hired as an extra postman due to the huge increase in mail that this causes. Il Postino is to hand-deliver the celebrity's mail to him. Though poorly educated, the postman learns to love poetry and eventually befriends Neruda. Struggling to grow and express himself more fully, he suddenly falls in love and needs Neruda's help and guidance more than ever.

Trainwreck: My life as an Idoit (2007) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0783601/) (IMDB: 5.9. Me: 8)
A different film, following a person which really can't keep any aspects of his life together. A funny, tragic and odd story which should in fact be based on a biography. It sounds more slap-stick funny than it actually is, but that only makes it better.

A dramatic comedy about a self-induced attention-deficit disordered, learning disabled, Tourette's syndrome suffering, balance impaired, ex-alcoholic young man from the Upper East Side of Manhattan and the gold-digging girl who inspires him to try to get it together

So, what is yours??
