Title: TCS Mod - LIVE!!!
Post by: Whitey on September 11, 2008, 08:54:36 PM
The TCS Mod created by our very own n00b is now running on Boomer.

Please report any issues in this thread.

What does the mod do?
At the moment it displays a chat message on screen when a player goes out of bounds or back in bounds.  The chat message fades out as normal but the player out of bounds will see a message in the middle of the screen for the duration of their time out of bounds.

Huge thanks to n00b for making the mod and Sadako for doing the map boundaries with him :clap::thumbsup:

Well done n00b - great work on the plugin.

Thanks to you and Mats for zoning all the maps as well :clap:

this should make the admins job a bit easier :)

No problem. It was good fun. Also it will help all the admins a lot, so it was well spent time.

Excellent work n00b :thumb:

Maybe it's worth pimping it to encourage other clans/communities to support objective teamplay.

Good job! :thumbsup2: Maybe this will put a stop to the admins for ever having to chastise people.....But I doubt it. The plonkers will still be illiterate. :rolleyes:
But a seriously innovative piece of work. :)

EDIT: Good point Oldie. +1

I was suggesting tonight to Whitey and n00b that we should make a TCS package including the no entry signs, the mod and the MOTD. If we have all the standard maps in the package it would work.

Yep, that's a good idea.  It will need some refinement before it's ready to distribute though! :flirty:

My only suggestion would be to rename it as OCS - Objective CounterStrike.

Hmmm would be nice to promote he plugin properly and also the game style.  I noticed that the following domains are available so if you guys would like to promote the package and the style I would be happy to build and host a site for it (my contribution to the community if you like) :D

//www.objectivegamplay.co.uk
//www.objectivecs.co.uk
//www.objectivecss.co.uk
//www.tacticalcounterstrike.com

etc etc

I am not sure it is related, but - since the mod was added, the game freezes up to 5 seconds at a time. I had this two evenings, and this happened to all players - including Whitey who was on the zombie server at the time. I have no idea if the mod can freeze the server and the cs servers running that much, but figured I'd mention it anyway...

That reminds me, I need to shutdown the Zombie server.

The mod was running on Baltar for a while before going on Boomer, I would have expected problems during the testing there if it was the mod. The Zombie server was also started just before the lag issue, so it will be interesting to see how things run with it down.

The mod doesn't do anything that would cause intermittent lag spikes - if it was causing lag, it'd be pretty much constant.  I was going to ask if there were server problems because I got dropped from Boomer last night, and for about 20 seconds all the dMw servers were listed as 'not responding'.  All my other favourites were fine.

One thing I did think of was the possibility of adding the player's location (ie the locations displayed under the mini-map) to the chat message when they go out of bounds... what do you think?

It would be nice to have in the log file so we can do some trend analysis :flirty:
I'm not sure how useful it would be during play as when they are oob, they are oob and the punishment is the same wherever they are.

Note: Zombie server down.

I was thinking more of alerting the opposing team that someone was out of bounds in a particular area...

In any case I'll start work on getting a log file generated.  What should it store?  Player name, number of seconds OOB per map change?

Store maybe number of going out of bounds per round/mapchange

Edit: sorry for spam

Yup.  Do you want one big log file, or should I split it by day/week? Should it record per map change, or if it's to be split into daily/weekly logs, then just keep a total of the number of seconds per player for that time period?

As discussed earlier n00b maybe a list at the end of the map displaying times OOB per player.

You mean displayed on screen? I thought Whitey was talking about a log as in a file written to the server.

I can do either, or both. :)

Edit: Actually the only problem with that would be the scoreboard, which you can't display on top of to my knowledge... hmm.  Maybe at the end of the last round?  That would only give a few seconds before the scoreboard appears though.. :(

I could display it at the start of the next map?

The scoreboard can be removed by pressing the "TAB" key.

True, not everyone would check that though.  I could have a side menu come up for everyone when the next map starts displaying the stats for the last map.

Or maybe just display on each players screen how many times he/she was OOB.

We're a relatively closed community so I don't think it's a problem. People will catch on imo.

Actually, that's probably the eventual goal - I will certainly want to do that before thinking about making a version that can be distributed. :)

Seems there could be some useful information that could be actioned or at least be of interest to the people on the server to read....

...so why not simply extend the time at the end of the map?  At the moment I think it changes within like 5 seconds or something?  If this was extended then useful information such as how many times a player was oob could be 'mentioned' and 'discussed' with the player in question.

This way admins have a chance to help newcomers in how to play the game on our servers.

:D

A daily log would be good with the stats recorded at each map change.
Showing the info on screen may be useful but I'd rather have it in a log file.

Spent a little time on this tonight and I believe it's working. :)

(http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/9774/tcsslogyb3.jpg)

As per normal, the bots wouldn't usually be counted in this but I enabled them again for testing purposes.  It probably still needs more testing though.

At the moment it logs steam id, name and number of seconds ( or 'counts' to be more accurate) out of bounds per map.  It uses the current date to identify the filename to write to at each map end, which means that it should automatically create new log files when the date changes.
