Title: Wheel angle
Post by: Doorman on September 11, 2008, 11:17:15 PM
Is your wheel positioned in front of you a little like a bus? (Lameduck read no further) I always felt it did. Then in the iRacing forum someone said in passing that they put something under their wheel to decrease the angle. i.e. making it more upright. I found a piece of wood about 1/4" thick and shoved it under the front of the base so that it tilted the front up. What a difference! Worth a fiddle with.

Yes, I actually clamp it down over the base of my monitor. That gives it the tilt you are describing.

So by raising the front, you're shallowing the angle of elevation back toward horizontal?

INKeerect. :) Wheel is being tilted towards the vertical

@VobLer. Good thinking. I did try that but could bring myself to really screw the clamp down hard enough to prevent the wheel cutting loose. I wrapped a piece of non slip matting round my bit of wood snd it's SOLID! :)

You have to be careful what you say on these forums - always someone is finding different meaning behind them :D

This still confuses me. You *like* having the wheel virtually flat like a bus, as opposed to more upright like a car? o.0

What I have looked pictures the biggest difference to real life seems to be that the 'toy' wheels have a smaller diameter. Is this true? And if so doesn't that give a weird feeling?

Some people (like Doorz) adapts a real racing wheel (Sparco/Momo) to their rig. They say it feels great.

However the bigger the diameter of the wheel the weaker the forces.. so I think it's recommendable to use quite a strong wheel (G25/911/Frex I guess) if you want to do that.

Speaking of the Frex wheel.. oh man, how I want one!! I don't suppose any of you guys know someone who has one?

My Sparco is 280mm, about the same size as the standard G25 but it feeeeels right!

I think it's been dismissed by the general sim public as being waaaay over the top price wise (â,¬1500, £1169 including a wheel and adapter :flirty:) There are not many who would get that past their wives.
Oh and don't forget the shipping on top of that!
The do look the biz though. :)

Yeah, it's expensive.. you could buy an old banger car and have a ton of fun with real racing at that price..! And not all that many games out there would be able to take full advantage of the complexity of the force feedback in this wheel.

Back to the original topic: I've never really considered the angle of the wheel to be an issue.. however I have noticed that the 911 wheel seems to be a lot more reclined than the G25. I guess that would take some getting used to.

There is one reason why I like to have the wheel at perfect angle. For normal steering it does not matter so much, but for occasions when you need to correct a slide and "throw" the wheel quickly it is pretty important to be able to do it naturally. I have adjusted my wheel so that I first sit in the cockpit and move my hands over an imaginary steering wheel. Then I have brought the wheel as close to that position as possible. It's not perfect yet but better than before doing that and quick movements do not feel difficult anymore.
