Title: FREE SPACE ON BLACKADDER
Post by: Stryker on July 31, 2003, 09:27:09 AM
Hi there,

Free space was all gone on blackadder.  So to make room I've deleted "Matrix Reloaded" from the leech account.  I figured everyone has got to have that by now :-)

Give me another month or so to finally determin that Crosswired LTD is happy with the level of traffic and then we can look into having another hard disk in blackadder.

BTW, FYI this month blackadder has hit 200GB of traffic..... yep thats gigabytes! :-)

Sadako, carry on uploading the new tomb raider movie.  BA has 2.2GB free now.

Can I say that if there's any problem with space/bandwidth then the leech facility is dropped.

I for one don't want to see anything jeopardise our little community or our standing with Crosswired.

thats very nice to hear.  Thats exactly why I've been very careful with the monitoring of BA.  In around 4-5 months time we will have a LOT of bandwidth spare.  In the mean time I have to just keep an eye on it.

I'm also planning on making time to play more.  I miss CS something terrible but as you may of noticed business is pretty good :-)

I think that we should have a deadline on the leech i.e. an uploaded item will only be on the leech for say 20 days (or 10) and then is removed. That way we keep it clean.

What do you think?

could cut the mustard yeah.

Perhaps we could just apply it to certain content such as the movies.  A simple cron job would take care of that.

Lets see.... tombraider 2, everyone will want it.  90% of the clan on broadband so I reckon in one day two people could download TR2 per FTP slot (remember I've limited the total number of simutanious conns to 4).

thats about 1 week for everyone to get it.  I reckon 20 or 30 days would be ok.

Anyone any good at bash scripts cos I cant be arsed :-)

I take it people are downloading during game times. I for one have played about four or five times in the last week and every night for at least half the time i have been getting 150 to 200 choke. Im not sure about tonight but TL checked and saw that people were d/l on the other evenings.  I dont know if this is being addressed but i see little point  playing on MH till it is.  /end rant

Still it is a good point not to download/upload during gaming hours. If people don't see the reason for it we might as well close the leech.

I say that downloading and uploading is forbidden from 19.00 to 01.00 all days.

My five,

I agree with  Sadako. Sorry  :D  i was annoyed last night. It may not be because of the d/l ing, but with a decent con. and with cl_cmdrate and cl_updaterate at 60 and rate and cl_rate at 9999.00 i was still getting 100 to 200 choke. Would it affect me and not others? (Im afraid i am a bit naive on these things :bucktooth: )

If I can provide you with a brief update on behalf of the Admins:

The server maintenance Stryker will undertake tonight is specifically designed to alleviate this problem.  We have purchased a very swish and sexy 3-Com Server NIC for BlackAdder and this is what Stryker will be installing tonight.  This will separate the gaming traffic for Homer and Baldric completely from any and all other traffic into BA (eg forums, deadmen website, hosted websites, ftp etc).  The latter will continue to operate on a separate nic.   It would be helpful to have feedback on whether or not this hardware upgrade has any impact upon the situation.  Please let us know.  :D

We have also been discussing and will continue to discuss the usage and potential abuse of the ftp server and will be considering some options in light of the success or otherwise of the hardware upgrade.

Please watch this space etc.....

I knew that. Still the leechers should take more care regarding this benefit.

I was also not seeing the severity of problems that Donks was experiencing last night. I was getting choke, but only single-figure stuff that I managed to tweak away by dropping both cl_updaterate and cl_cmdrate to 41. This may be a good time to remind everyone that a couple of minutes with Pingplotter or similar will usually give you a fair indication as to where your particular connection to Blackadder is going titsup.

As a side note, I hope to be supplying Stryker with a box so that I can switch my availability site to Crosswired. Switching the Leech area to this box would be an option and, if a very large HDD was purchased for it, it becomes an even more attractive option.  8)

If a large HDD is needed, then it can be done.  How big do you want?

give it a while.  perhaps a new hd fund could be raised privatley between us, HD purchased and it could be handed over at the next lan.

By then I should be settled in with the new bandwidth deal and be able to open up the ftp slots somewhat.

Yeah that sounds like a good idea. 120GB is pretty cheap these days if it's an IDE the server will take. I'd image it would take a bit to fill that (famous last words) if we are sensible and delete any old stuff after a month say. I'd be happy to chip in, having made good use of the space provided so far.

I am also ready to chip in. If you like I could buy that 120GB and fill it with ... LAN photos amd then deliver it at the LAN. Then when people have looked at the pictures we can delete some of them and fill with new.  :D

What do you think?

Well as Stryker said let's give it a short time and we'll see how we go.  If end up changing the HDD then we can debate various cost:size benefits of different HDDs.  Â£160 will get you 200GB for example.

And for £173 you get two of these.

 Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 120GB IDE
- ATA/100 hard drive 2MB cache 7200RPM
£86.32

240GB  :D

Unfortunately, AFAIAA we need a single drive, hence I didn't bother going down that route.  Linux is tough enough without trying to get it  to share over 2 HDDs  :(

we have room for one additional drive.....  there would be no need to mess with the existing drive.

Remove the cdrom and we can fit two extra drives!!  I'd rather not tho :-)

we can talk it over at the LAN, that would be about the right time for a review.

I'm not really sure where this all started to get mixed up ...    :?

You see? I give Stryker a new box with a big HDD in it so we can take the Leech away from Blackadder and onto the new box. This leaves BA leech-free. Geddit?  :D

Debian = Redneck Techy Madman Linux

You need long white hair, a penguin T-Shirt and a nocturnal instinct to dual NIC a Debian box. Oh and long fingernails for easy reaching the F keys.
