Title: Internet Troubles
Post by: T-Bag on October 24, 2008, 12:41:44 PM
My problem is very strange but I'll do my best to summarise it.
I can only access the internet with Internet Explorer 64Bit.
Anything else which tries to access the net doesn't see it and the majority of the times when I close a program that has been trying to access the internet unsuccessfully it then crashes and comes up with a box saying "Stopped responding" and then closes.

I'm on Vista 64bit, freshly formatted. I'm wired into the the (Belkin :()Router. It's a cable modem. I can see the internet with my laptop (using the wirelss).
The internet doesn't work perfectly for others either, sometimes they have to unplug and re-plug in their network cables etc.

I've got 4 routers here and I've tried them all with various degrees of success.

Right now I'm on [Modem] -> [Belkin Router]
When I try more routers the connection gets even stranger.

My final setup should be [Modem] -> [Router 1] -> [Router 2]
with people being able to connect to the internet when plugged into any of them. It used to work but has decided not to. Can anyone think of settings I should be looking for on the router or programs I can install to make things work for all programs not just IE 64bit?

Edit: OOOPS!

Is the laptop 64bit as well?

Do you use a large, common ISP?

Laptop is 32Bit.
The 2 routers connect together into the same modem and we all share the same 20Mbit internet connection.

Ok fixed it. Looks like the problem with the internet at my end is a combination of Nod32 and Vista SP1. So Nod has gone and it's working again. The routers not working in series has been fixed (I hope) by using two of the Belkin ones and changing the settings of them so they don't conflict. Seems to be working for now.

Is there any reason you're using 2 routers rather than a router with an extra switch hung off it? 2 routers just seems to be introducing complexity that doesn't have to be there.

Do you have NOD32 antivirus og the ESET Smart Security packaged with firewall as well? If the latter, find settings for trusted network and add all the relevant ranges - and as Carrot says, the more subnetworks, the worse it gets

It was Nod32 Anti Virus only. As for the two routers. We're using a mash of all the things we all had between us. I was using an 8-port switch and a router last 2 years, but don't have one this year and my loan hasn't gone in yet so still avoiding spending money.
The 2 router setup had worked for the month and 1/2 before, I think one of them had just failed. They don't tend to last more than a couple of years. And the one that I replaced had been attatched to the switch before.
It's a pain having 7 wired connections in a house.

I've never heard of any pure anti-virus program (far less NOD32) stopping an internet connection. That's just plain weird!

Doesn't NOD have firewall too?  Software firewalls can be a pain in the arse with stopping internet connections and the like.

As for the rest of the PC's being effected - maybe the PC in discussion had Internet Gateway turned on and the others naturally and without telling anyone (naughty PC's) decided to use this PC as it's route to the Internet.

I always turn off Internet Gateway by the way and I would suggest checking that and uninstall it unless absolutely necessary :D

NOD32 Anti-Virus doesn't. The NOD32 Security Suite does
