I know of these are not perfect but it's a start. (The Wow one, The LAN etc in particular).
Gandy, I guess we need to see whether we can get these on the user rank, check they rollover ok and sort a running order.
We also need to set up the public groups / access for the Section Admins to be able to award them.
thanks

For the LAN Attendee, what about an icon similar to the 'network connection' icon in the task bar of XP? Something like a slimmed down version of this:

Added new amended Icon for LAN.
I quite like the simplicity of the LAN and the 2nd Forum one. I'll look for similar for subscribers etc.

How about this for WoW?

Am I getting the wrong end of the stick....again? Are we talking about icons for game sections or games? If it's the latter, there'll be LFS, iRacing, nKPro at least. If it's the former, then forget about the LFS icon. Please. :)
EDIT: :bigidea: A thought just occurred to me. If it's game based I only have LFS to consider. Section admins will need to be appointed for the other driving sims.
I'll work on the CoD image to bring it in line with the 3 CSS images
LFS needs to be removed.

I have the four because I wasn't sure what colours we wanted to settle on. I included similar colours to CS and then added the green in case we wanted to do as BB says and have green for standard and silver for admin.
ahh gotcha. No one's ever accused me of being quick-witted

Just a tad negative here. They look like two people about to get into a fight! How about a picture of two people have a cup of tea and a chat?
Do they? I didn't see it like that but I guess it's all open to interpretation :flirty:
I'm struggling to find icons that will be clear when reduced to 32x32 pixels. Perhapsjust a speech bubble?
PEN
Why not throw it open to the members to design these?
We have some damn clever gfx jockeys out there. Let's get them to design the icons.
Here's what I think we require:
CounterStrike and CoD4 - 4 icons each for:
triallist, tagged, admin and section head
dMr & DMR - 3 icons each for:
tagged/guilded, admin/officer and section head/GM
Non-gaming Administration :
Section Head Servers
Section Head LAN
Section Head Forum
Forum Moderator
Forum Quality Contributor
Non-gaming Awards:
LAN attendee
Community Supporter
Golden Bollox (gaming+LAN/Supporter+Forum)
We can easily use any of those already suggested if we want to as the judges' decision is final and ... we're the judges.
OK that's fine.
Although rather than dump the whole lot on them let's define which ones we're happy with.
I think that Ron's happy with the racing ones and Whitey's happy with CS:S so I'll start with t'others
PEN
No sign of Arm (think he is away again) so in his absence I'll say Im happy with CoD ones.
Just need a triallist icon.
OK, As Oldie says, we need four icons - as we need to add one in for triallists for COD and CS:S.
Perhaps then add in a white one for each of those.
I'll put the others out to tender and see who bites.
PEN
Just got back.
and the cod ones are fine.

Done (with no small amount of plagiarism!).
I'm thinking about having this rolled out by January 1st (which would fall in nicely with the annual subscriptions / LAN attendance model).
Realistic?

Seems achievable to me.
I've posted (http://www.deadmen.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=25329) to the community so we'd better get a move on.:)
Nice post
May want to add Gandy as Section Head - Stuff the rest of us mortals don't understand.
Also, I think the 'special' badge needs either the LAN attendee tag or Contributor tag and doesn't need to be both (although it'd be nice :norty:)
The Forum structure para ends a bit strangely .... ?
Did we agree that we're giving people a discount off the LAN if they subscribe? I know we thought about it. Personally I'd be tempted not to say that in the first instance and lets see how many people subscribe. If we have loads then we can offer it in due course as an incentive. (Not a biggie either way though).
Finally, I think we should moot the £12 figure around the place as a suggested contribution figure to give people an idea. If someone gives us a quid then they're not getting the badge. I think we also change the paypal figure to that as well.

Yes for sure. I think we also agreed Tobious's Folding badge was a good idea.
Added to front end post.
PEN
Is the Community Supporter tag renewable on an CALENDAR year or a subscription year?
If a calendar year.....if someone donates for the Community Support badge in November 2008 in essence they only get the badge for one month before becoming due again? Or will it be for a year from date of payment?
PEN
PS. I envisage the LAN badge will run from April to April - so if you go to the LAN in either April or October in any one year, you will retain the badge until the following April's LAN when all LAN badges will be removed and then only re-issued to those attending the April LAN (who will keep it until the following April). It will also then be issued to additional people attending the October LAN (who will also keep it until the following April).
Does that make sense?

It makes sense and I can see it will make the administration easier but for someone that only attends the LAN at the end of the year, it doesn't seem fair that you only have the LAN badge until the April. Why should someone who only attends in April get extra status over someone who only attends in October?
The only fair way around this is to make the badge valid from the LAN you attend until the next LAN or valid for 12 months from the LAN you attend.

We would prob need two LAN badges unless Gandy knows a simple way to work it with one. We could have an April badge and an Oct/Nov badge if necessary.
Spring LAN and Autumn LAN kind of thing.... Seems a tad excessive but if we have the room then it may encourage more double attendances :norty:

Forum badge needs the addition of a red one to indicate moderator and the basic one should be green.

Not a huge fan of the 'admin' icon, the smiley sun. It looks too much like a generic smiley rather than a badge of office. That being said I offer absolutely nothing as an alternative :g:
Wot he said. We'll have to come up with one, the smiley was just a test of whether they could be applied to a group.
TL.
Greg, you also need to decide on the Forum Contributor tag as it's your department :). I like the current one and if you go with it, I'll amend it to fit in the green (general), red (admin/mod), Gold (Section Head) module. Otherwise can you come up with an alternative? Anything in mind?
Thanks

What's a LAN admin?
I'd like to acknowledge those people who stand up and make a contribution. (it tends to be the same people each time). For example...... You always prep the servers, Sheepy always does a lot of work, I'm forever asking Ghosty to do stuff, Gandy does the networking, The people on the Games and Competition Committee. Those who spend the w/e configuring servers etc.
If people are prepared to help make it a success then I'll award them the admin tag. Wont be for everyone who chips in but for those that make a true effort.
LAN Admin may be a bit spurious - it's more LAN Helper but I was trying to keep it in the format. I'd tag everyone up after the gaming weekend... those who attended and those who really helped.
What's what I was thinking anyway. Positive motivation and recognition.
ok?

I guess we also need to come up with a running order for the icons to appear under people's names (do we Gandy?)
I offer up Community badges followed by gaming badges :
Gold Member -> Subscriber -> Community Supporter -> LAN 1 and II -> FAH ->
Game badges: COD -> CS:S -> Racing (alphabetical).
Or I wonder if we do two rows of badges as default and have, say, Community badges on the top line and the game badges on the bottom.. would that work (and doable).
Thoughts?

they'll wrap as and when needed. it's not something we can hardcode to appear on certain rows.
as for the order, I'm not sure on that, will need to check. I would assume it'll be in the order of the ranks in the control panel so as long as they are in the correct order then they'll show in that order.
Thanks Gandy.

We're going to sort the tags/badges out this weekend when Gandy and Smilo are coming chez PEN.
AFAIAA, we're almost there but we potentially need:
1. Triallist COD4 badge.
2. Administrator badge (if we still need this?) Could be superceeded by the Forum moderator (red community badge).
Is everyone else happy with the respective Section badges??
3. What have we decided about the Donation badge? Shall we put it to a poll or just choose one?
The main choices are:

Poll it. I believe we said we would.

OK, following discussions we need to have a gold 'Server' icon and a gold 'Network' icon for BB and Gandy as repsective Section Heads.
BB and Gandy - Do you want to do this ??

Ooo! Blancmange! :yahoo:
I don't know about Armitage but I'm feeling a bit left out with all those new icons you've got :crying:
Edit: :D
There you go. We only sorted this out this afternoon and there's still one or two tweaks we need to do before we go live proper. This will include a 'section head forum icon howto' which Gandy will knock up. I've done your tag just to make sure I can remember how it's done after todays "forum training session" !!! Then we need the nod from the God and we're away :)
There are a few 'ranks' with tags. These were only done to test the system and make sure it works.... which it does.
I've been looking around the various threads on tags trying to find the Network Admin badge so I can make it gold for Gandy. However, I can't find it anywhere. is there one or have I missed it?
Thanks,

I noticed that the Spring and Autunm LAN helper names only allow a certain number of characters and so had been cut at -
"Awarded to people who help out significantly at th.....".
I've trunkated them to Spring LAN Helper and Autumn LAN Helper. If anyone can think of something more appropriate than helper, please shout.
Likewise the CS:S match badge was similarly snipped and so I've parred it down to
"CS:S active competitor".
The pop up descriptions were fine and didn't need amending.
Fine.
I've tweaked the ordering I think forum admin should be before my section head - lan. It only affects my own tag order but I think it looks nicer and falls in line with the others.
PEN
I'll consider it and let you know my final decision presently. I've just noticed that forum red badge holders are "Forum Administrators". As I understand it from oldie, we're looking to get away from the phrase 'administrator'. Plus frankly it makes you sound more important than me, and I'll not be having that Sir!
Seriously though, any thoughts on a suitable icon title for the red forum badge?

They are Forum Moderators i.e. Browne for "Cyber Security".
Penfold - I think you need to have a single "Section Head - LAN" badge instead of the two you currently display. Your role is independent of Spring/Autumn.
I think we should only have one LAN badge full stop. Just not sure whether it's per calendar year or what.
Ideally I'd like to scrub them all each April before each LAN and reward them. then add those who come in October. The problem with that is that if you turn up in October you only get the tag for 6 months.
but that may be a bit harsh.
It'll be quite hard to get to April and then delete those who were at the April LAN but not at the October LAN (Those at the october lan should then stay tagged until the next october lan) it would be fairer but hard to administrate.
I guess I could do it via a spreadsheet.
I think that's the way to go.
ok?

 I know :bigidea:
It's your section - you decide :flirty:
heh ok then.
I'm going to try it to do it fairly and run a spreadsheet so that people get the tag for one year from LAN attendance.
If it transpires to be a right PITA working it out I'm going to do it per calendar year.
PEN
Aha sorry I was under the impression that they were for people who could admin the forum rather than moderate it. Moderator is clearly the right way to go so I'll update the text ready for when I dish them out to forum moderators.
I'll need to keep an eye on whether people are actually doing any actual moderation and maybe remove a few out of date moderation privileges.
And I'd suggest you all take a look at Zootoxins offering. If he can do a full set for us I think things would look very professional. I really like what he's done here. I'd say we ask him to do the lot for us.Thoughts?

I preferred the joystick for the compettitive gaming tbh - it fitted better with the other designs IMHO.
BlueBall's is OK but doesn't have the 'Gold' status like the other Section Heads.
Not convinced by the Competitive Gamer, Server or Sector Head icons. I think these are more down to finding an acceptable icon rather than the colour scheme. I'd rather we find some better icons to be reworked into the colour scheme.

OK so what now. This is where it gets tricky.

I think TL is right that, having agreed to adopt the set with common styling, the three he mentions simply do not fit in.
(http://www.roardesigns.co.uk/badges/NETWORK-GOLD.png) This one works for Section Head - Networks
(http://www.hotlinkfiles.com/files/2054961_7xydd/server.jpg) This could be worked by Zoot into the new format for Section Head - Servers
(http://www.roardesigns.co.uk/badges/PLAYER.png) Works for me for competitive gamer.
As for who decides - we all do but all the cards are now on the table.
There are only two choices: the list posted by Pen or the amendments posted by me. We must all agree to accept the majority decision.

They've stopped looking like servers and instead look like imposing buildings. :)
If you're happy to go with one of those BB then fine but if you're not entirely happy with them then find another image for Zoot to weave his magic on.
I voted for Penfold cos we know that nobody will vote for him anyway and we don;t want him to actually get to know that nobody likes the *******.

Regarding the red server icon, it's worth pointing out that we don't actually have a rank for a server red icon/badge holder. Servers and networks are just gold ranked icons for BB and Gandy.
Blueball are you planning on awarding a red icon to anyone. I believe the red game icon for LFS, CS, and CoD4 are going to be awarded to game server admin's by the relevant game section heads. I'm not fully familiar with the community wide server admin status, I thought it was just you?

Well it is and it isn't. You see I have a band of little helpers I call my server elves:
OB, TL, Gandy, Whitey and Ron all have access to the servers and, IMHO, should get a red server tag.
Then we shall make it so :D
