Insurgency - How to play it

Hi people! I thought I'd do some research into this mod as there have been a few players from dMw playing it and a few more joining us when we play.

Note: We seem to have chosen Wednesday evenings as 'Insurgency Mod Night'

Anyway, I thought I'd give you all a brief write up of it's history and how to play the game.  The information I'm bringing to this thread is mostly from www.insmod.net (http://www.insmod.net).  So I thought I would disect the information from that site and write it here in summary form.  I will put links where useful to the full articles on insmod.net.

Current status of Insurgency - global
This game is taken very seriously now with Insurgency clans being formed and ESL (Electronic Sports League) setting up a league for the game.

Insurgency is now at version 2 and with it's release onto Steam recently it's popularity has grown rapidly.

History, Concept and Battlefields of Insurgency
Insurgency mod started development back in 2002 with the goal to create a game that was based on immersive and squad based gameplay (sound familiar?)

Installation of Insurgency
As long as you have a Source based game already and a Steam account, you will be able to download and install Insurgency for FREE!  If you are having trouble finding it and installing it, here is a link directly to the install page (http://store.steampowered.com/app/17700/).

How to play the game
Probably the bit that most of us struggle with to begin with.  The important thing to remember is that this is a team based game.  Other games you can get away with running off on your own and nabbing a kill or two.  This game is designed in such a way that teamwork is of paramount importance.

Those of us who have played this mod so far will no doubt confirm this in replies.

Basics of the game (More detail here (http://www.insmod.net/?page=manual))

I won't bore you with the keyboard controls here, learn them yourself.  Maybe we can add later our useful tips?

There are four gameplay types (more here (http://www.insmod.net/?page=manual#gametypes))

Battle, Push, Firefight & Strike.

Battle is linear (forward/back etc) where you are on the frontline.  Battle maps are large and your reinforcement location (spawning) changes dependant on your teams success or failure of taking the map.

Push is linear again but the teams either have to attack or defend locations.  The attacking team must secure the objectives and the defending team stop them.  Again Push maps can be large and reinforcement location changes dependant on the teams success or failure on the map.

Firefight is the gameplay type we are familiar with probably on the dMw server.  This is where both teams need to secure the objectives to win the round.  These maps are smaller and reinforcement locations are usually fixed.  Whether you attack or defend is based on your commanders orders.

Strike maps are "Hold the fort" style gameplay.  Here, the defending team has to hold the objective until either the attacking team takes the objective, runs out of time or runs out of reinforcements.

Chain of Command (more here (http://www.insmod.net/?page=manual#commandermode))
For a team to win at Insurgency, the team must work together but also have a good commander.  The team must follow orders or probably the team will fail.

There are a number of commands that the commander can use which I wont bore you with completely here apart from to say that 'Calling for reinforcements' (if available) can be crucial and setting waypoints should be used to gather the team together.

Usually the first person spawing on the team has the option to become the commander but you can be demoted from command if you are not performing!

Obectives (more here (http://www.insmod.net/?page=manual#objectives))
The objective of the game is to 'secure' objectives (A, B, C, D).  To capture a friendly objective you need to have enough of your team in that location.  If you are the only player there, then that would be enough.  However you may notice that the objective is 'blocked'.  This means that there is an enemy player at the same location!  Additionally, you may notice that you are blocked and then even notice that the enemy is 'Attacking objective x'!  This means that there are more enemy players at that location than your team!

The more players you have in a location, the quicker it will be captured.

Reinforcement (spawning) (more here (http://www.insmod.net/?page=manual#reinforcements))
Reinforcement Waves is the way Insurgency works with respawning.  The number of Reinforcement Waves depends on the map configuration. Some maps there won't be a Reinforcement Wave!  The commander has the abillity to call for an energency Reinforcement Wave and the number of these is displayed in his HUD.

Weapons and Ammo (more here (http://www.insmod.net/?page=manual#weaponry))
As you will have noticed, there are no crosshairs!  Therefore accuracy is very important and you can do this by getting as low as possible.  Staying together as a team helps this.  For instance one or two of your team might sprint for cover while overs lie prone giving (accurate) covering fire.

You can die with just one bullet!

Marksmanship (more here (http://www.insmod.net/?page=manual#marksmanship))
Your breathing patterns effect your aim so getting as low as possible improves this.

Teamwork and Tactics (more here (http://www.insmod.net/?page=manual#teamwork))
Tip: Search for your Squad Leader on your HUD.  Stick together as a team and you will do well

Resources
There are a number of downloads on the Insurgency website including wallpapers, install link and trailers.  Linky (http://www.insmod.net/?page=downloads)

There are a number of Insurgency websites springing up and there is a Community Links (http://www.insmod.net/?page=community) page on the Insurgency website for you to browse and learn more.

Additionally there are the Insurgency Forums (http://forums.insmod.net/) for more information.

That's all for now.  I'm aware that this is really a beginners post made by a beginner but I'm sure it will get better with time :D

I'll edit and update this post as and when required.  Please post your thoughts on how we can enjoy and play the game better here :D

This is a really good guide, a must read, Get part 2 as well

For those who have trouble in telling who's alive or dead, Press M for mini-map and you will get something like this (http://ripteam.org/insurgency/New%20Player/Part%202/2.jpg), (I'm linking to original thread on INS MOD forums)
