I am not normally a whisky drinker, but I really enjoyed our whiskey tasting at the LAN. So I went out and bought myself a bottle of Bowmore Cask. Which I am enjoying, But what were the 2 bottles we had?

I brought the LAPHROAIG QUARTER CASK (http://www.laphroaig.com/whiskies/quarter_cask/index.asp?expanded=quarter_cask) which was the really peaty flavoured one. Not to everyone's taste but certainly distinctive.

Aye the Laphroaig was rather splendid. As was Spudgun's contribution which I'm sorry I can't remember its name.

From my side, my favourite is Talikser. The 10-year oldd  (http://www.whiskyshop.com/Shop/Detail.aspx?pid=1277)is fine but the 18-year old  (http://www.thedrinkshop.com/products/nlpdetail.php?prodid=3172)is sublime.

Since it's first outing a few LAN's ago it's received quite a following. It's very Peaty and was also named Single Malt of the Year 2007.

It's my turn to bring some a malt to the next LAN so I'll being a bottle of 18-year old it may even push to the 57° Distillers edition if I can still source it.

My favourtest favourite of all is Dallas Dhu but since the distillery closed in 1983 it's becoming harder and rarer to find. :(

Pen, good stuff! I would like to recommend Highland Park 30 yrs (http://www.highlandpark.co.uk/shop/whisky.asp?curpage=3) After trying a 23-year old thing I bought in Iceland customs some years back, I got curious and tried that one. So far, the best I've ever tried.

I brought the more distinctive Drink, a bottle of Vodka well matured (1 day old) and redball which myself and Andy (crazy R1) drank, it was a good year (2008) and was filtered with no added peat in it what so ever just ice.:D

If you are looking for an incredibly smooth whisky with a kick like a mule keep your eyes peeled for Glenfarclas 105 (http://www.glenfarclas.co.uk/en/pages/78,Glenfarclas_105.html) (sometimes called Director's Special).

It is absolutely gorgeous but NB that it is 60% ABV!!!!

£34.99 here (http://www.parkerswhisky.co.uk/oscommerce/glenfarclas-105-malt-whisky-p-85.html)

Welcome to the wonderful world of whiskey my friend.

What sort of tastes and textures do you go for?

Whiskeys are very diverse and many things affect the taste, smell, colour etc but for a general flavour for scottish whiskeys you need to look at the region.

I prefer lowlands and Speyside malts which tend to be crisp and light instead of the deap peatiness of the Highlands.

Although the Highlands have a great range so deserve some investigation for sure.

Glenlivet is my favourite easily accessed malt.

I just picked up a bottle of Compass Box Aslay which is absolutely delicious :)

I will bring a bottle to the next LAN

Squonk likes a drop too, worth getting his comments here. My particular favourite at the moment is a good old Jameson. Nothing flash. As it comes.

I could, of course wax lyrical about 30 year old x, y and z, but let's face it, credit crunch, whisky used to be £10 a bottle. If it strips paint, smells like nitromors and pours like treacle it must be good, right?

ooh, that'll last a good few months. I never drink it when I'm gaming. I stick to beer for that, otherwise I'll just waste the bottle and not enjoy it. Whiskey is to be savoured, not swilled while fragging everything in sight!

A good movie, or some mood music, and a glass or two of fine single malt is the way to enjoy it fully :)

This morning, in the pursuit of pure research, I purchased a bottle. This finish is called 'Quinta Ruban', (another ponsified branding). Despite the temptation to try immediately, I resisted 'til 10am.

How the directors of the Glenmorangie distillery have the gall to sell this is beyond me.

I'd keep every drop for myself. I have decided that today is a 'happy' day.

Next time i'll remember not to be either playing games or asleep when you get the whiskeys out :-( It's not quite the same joining in when you all half cut :lmfao:. i have to say, what little of the whiskey i did have certainly helped with my cold :crying:

Either way, The Aberlour (10yr single malt) is quite nice, not to sharp on the tongue, though what sharpness there is lingers. Good warm glow of a feeling after you've had a little, warms you right through. Not amazing or anything to speak off compared to others i've had, but not bad for only £16 a bottle.

I'd describes the others i have but i've finished them :narnar:, (10yr Macallan).

Well, if it's highly rated by seasoned whiskey drinkers here it can't be that bad, and cheaper than a quality tipple from the super market so a punt of £25 on amazon prime sounds like a good deal!

Quote from: Lameduck;410247... The first bottle on the right (nearest to Oldie, suprisingly) was the best whisky I've tasted in my life, and that's saying something:dribble:

Was that the ridiculously expensive bottle that one of the BIG guys brought down?

I remember me and Target fighting over the Lagavulin ... gorgeous stuff.

I shall be bringing one of these (http://www.waitrose.com/shop/ProductView-10317-10001-36964-Aberlour+A'bunadh+single+malt.html).

And, just a heads-up that this evening in sanctioned by the hotel. The guidelines surrounding bringing in your own drink are still very much in effect.

I think so. I can vaguely recall being told that it was bottled from a 'private' barrel.
The Lagavulin was very 'peaty' IIRC.
Happy days!!

The writing on the side indicates "single cask". You can get that sort of thing through being a member (or knowing a member) of the Scotch malt whisky society https://www.smws.com ...not sure where else you'd find it? I've been to their London members club once or twice as a guest, never got round to joining though! Worth a trip if you can get an invite or go on an open day :flirty:

Huh! I thought Whisky goes off once bought and needs to be drunk within one week, maybe two at a push.!!

Mmmm I like the Leapfrog 1/4 cask. Another recommendation if you like it is Caol Ila. Currently working our way through a litre bottle of that.

Finished an Auchentoshan last week, which was nice.

I'd definitely second the Caol Ila recommendation, it's one of my favorites, though I find it a much (er...drier?) proposition that Laphroaig. Ardbeg is another excellent peaty option :D

Wow these lan events are sounding even better. Think I'm going to have to try the Talisker. If you like peaty snooks I'd recommend Lagavulin 16yo, my favourite and very distinctive

Yup I am partial to a Laggy too. In fact I am not choosy any Islay will do!!
It all depends on what I'm eating with it on which I prefer but I find chocolate goes with them all.

That will be peat, more peat, smokiness, peat then a dollop of peat on top for the smokey effect.
