You can currently use the ingame server browser to add both servers as favourites, simply open a console and enter 'openserverbrowser' and you'll get a standard Steam server browser to use.

PS I know the graphic looks crappy when you join so if someone wants to make one that fits be my guest :)

Well it would appear that we have a choice We can have a passworded server or we can have a server we connect to through a lobby. It doesn't look as if we can have both:

Hmmm that is actually an double edge sword. I understand the thought that we should have it PW protected for our community members. On the other side seeing L4D being all about co-op it is really those guys and gals that we want joining our community. Maybe some sort of middle ground?
Having it public until say 18.00-19.00 in the day and then pw protecting it? Another thought could be that admins were allowed to kick off non community members for a slot. Rcon should work in this case afaik.
I am not saying any of these suggestions are an answer but at least worth discussing.

I think it's unlikely anyone playing on the server will look up the details and join up. With CS:S it's a lot more server based, you get on with people etc. Where as L4D seems to be friends based. If they get on with people they'll add them to their friends list. Or atleast that's what I'd do.

I have tried setting:
   sv_allow_lobby_connect_only "1"as it was recommended to set it to "0".

If you join from a desktop shortcut it seems to punt you straight through the lobby into our server :)
If you join through the lobby you can setup the game you want (including versus).

I am hoping that this will allow us to play in peace but as there is very little VALID info about how this all works I am having to do a lot of "try it and see" stuff which is why it is taking so long to get this working (that and the fact Valve couldn't plan a party).

Can people let me know by posting back here if this solves the problem or not? If not we might need a more complex search key just in case other people use the same (it might be too obvious).

It sounds like valve don't even know how to make it work.

I'm sure you've tried this but can't we add it to the steam group?

Edit: Also I can't see any way to change the Campaign lobby to a Versus lobby...

Edit: Also I have the dMw server in my favourites on the server browser and it still joins straight into the game without going to the lobby...

We could but then we would lose the ability to have lobby! Valve, in their infinite wisdom, gave us the ability to password it OR to have it in a steamgroup OR to have lobby.

I'd go for steamgroup then, the lobby system is a complete mess just now. For example, if you join our server, vote to return to lobby, change any settings then start the game again you won't end up on the dMw server.  It's like a lobby isn't actually for any particular server, it just looks for any server that matches your settings... so changing lobby settings doesn't change anything on the server and means that you won't get back to the same server because it's not what you're looking for any more. :doh:

Even if you return to lobby and don't change any settings, and with sv_search_key set correctly, it often fails to find the dMw server when you start the game and asks if you want to host a local server.  There's a sv_search_max_results setting which is set to 75 by default, I assume that's the maximum number of servers it'll check for your key before giving up.  I changed it to 500 (more than the total number of servers which show up in the server browser) and it didn't seem to make a difference. :g:

The lobby allows you to get some guys together, decide on which map and difficulty setting, and then to kick the server into life.

Ignore, you do need the password.

Okay, how to exactly setup through something on the desktop shortcut?
Me and Tox tryed today but failed.

Start Steam
Open the "Games" dialog by right clicking on the steam icon in your sys tray
find the entry for Left4Dead
right click on it and select "create desktop shortcut"
Edit the startup details of the shortcut to be:

"C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 500 +connect cs.deadmen.co.uk:27030 +password "password"

It will probably be:

"C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 500

by default so you just have to add:

+connect cs.deadmen.co.uk:27030 +password "password"

Got it to work now, thanks for the explanation.
 
Still what I find annoying is the game freezing up alot.
Any solutions for this aswell?

I haven't seen it freezing up I'm afraid. I've seen several other annoying bugs like no animation for puking as Boomer sometimes.

I had the same thing as Pete with L4D that it was freezing.
But it happend by me when i installed the newest Nvidia drivers.
So delete the new ones installed an older one and no freezing anymore.
Maybe it's the same with you Pete.:flirty:

Aha! The penny's dropped.

Duvel - sorry but I'd forgotten about the driver issue.

You can, as KKND has suggested, roll back your drivers or a solution that worked for me was to put L4D into borderless windowed mode.

Created the 2 shortcuts as BB suggested, but is there any way to quickly browse the servers outside of the game to see if and who is on?  The steam "server" screen won't let me look at them - do I have to use something like X-fire?

You can dl HLSW to see who is on the server.

If you have Vista there is a sidebar plugin (http://gallery.live.com/liveItemDetail.aspx?li=3b3b3a59-5eca-4e65-af82-04e8dff4e28f&bt=1&pl=1) or you can use HLSW to have a look

I usually check through friends first and if someone's on a dMw-server just press "join game".

Has anyone figured a way to remove the start up video?

I know you can escape out of it but it'd be nice to join without having it start each time

Meander your way to \Left4Dead (English one) rummage around till you find 'media' and delete media/valve.bik and media/l4d_intro.bik
EDIT: These files will be replaced the next time there's an update.

I just made shortcuts for the servers, tho will probably use HLSW now with docs little tip :)
Tho has anyone found a way to "remove" the password box when you launch the game?

I think BB had a solution to that problem.

well ive entered the pw in the launch string in the shortcut, and thats fine, that removes the steam pw box, but when the game is loaded and is about to join the server, a new pw box pops up with the pw entered, only thing it wants, is for me to press the ok button..

I'm pretty sure it's the map.

Join the versus server to double check as that's all vanilla. Then make sure your client is up to date and then reinstall the latest DeathAboard vpk map.

I had the string table issue, turned out to be a version mismatch.
 
Was solved by deleteing all trace of deathaboard, then installing the new version.

If you can see the maps for DeathAboard in your maps directory,then you have the wrong version for sure.

Latest release is a .vpk campaign file.

You'll need to clear out all the old stuff first.

Thanks for that. :thumbsup2: I didn't have a lot of those files, presumably because I'd never played the map. :)

EDIT: I notice I have an 'addons' folder and an 'add_ons' folder. I've put it in 'addons', can I ditch the other one?
