Stupid guestion but could someone tell me what's the difference between GPU and CPU??:blush:
GPU is folding using your graphics card and CPU is folding using your PC Processor. GPU folding is wayyyyyyy quicker than CPU folding if your card can do it.

Up to 40 times quicker according to the stats from Stanford. That said, it does still get a wee bonus.

Yeah GPU is awesome by comparison. I've done the same amount of points in three weeks or so with one GPU client that I did in 9 months with 4 or 5 PC's on the CPU client.

Yes they can. However, the GPU requires a slightly higher priority. You have to change priority from low to slightly higher. In the tray version that is an option at the top in the options screen. Also - be sure to set different machine IDs.
If you find that the system is clogged when both clients are running then consider updating your nvidia drivers as the 178s, when using the GPU client, who does not some CPU as well, had very high CPU load (my 8800GT required just about 25% of my Quad core). With the 180 drivers the load is down to a couple of percent but the GPU client performs slightly worse. Not sure if the performance drop makes it better to just stick with pure GPU folding though :g:

I've completed my first WU now but it went into the page with a name that most of you guys won't regognise. If I change my user from the configue will it change on the F@H website as well or will it automatically create a new user to the page??

Yes it will create a new user, but the credit for the one WU will stick with the old name.

Finally gotten myself to add F@H at my home server (1.8GHz AMD Sempron with 512MB RAM), so that should hopefully help a bit on my production rate.
I haven't really managed to figure out what has happened with those computers I left running with F@H when I left school last summer though... I though they were gone a couple of months ago, but now suddenly there are more active processors on the F@H stats page than I can account for... Well, I won't complain about that :)
Started some folding for you guys. Name will be Magnus417. Will not run all the time but when running will be a quad core machine at 4 gig and an ati 4870 x2 so will add some points and a ps3 for luck. My computer seems to run at between 680 - 800 iter/sec on the gpu client but I have no idea if that is good or bad and have no idea what my cpu is doing. Will need to see if my ps3 will download the update first!!!

Decided to come out of retirement and start folding again,downloaded and installed the gpu client but it seems to be playing up,every time i start it and try to play a game such as cod 4 my pc freezes then shuts down, i have a asus 9500gt 1gb pentium core duo 3ghz and 2mb ram.
anyone got any suggestions that may help me resume folding without these problems.

In the tray, and then options: do you have priority to low or slightly higher?
was set to slightly higher,so i changed it to low games work ok m=now though f@h (f@h) seem to beattempting to get to get work packets for a bout 2 hours now

ok getting a bit frustrated now, i did some folding yesterday but cant find my username in the stats to make sure its working. Can someone please help. I need to know if i have done everything right. I download the client, installed it and all is well. Open the client, enter a username of dMwSparKo, and our team ID. All looks fine. i then minimise to the taskbar and it gets on with it nice and hapily, stating working 15/125. I presume this is all i need to do? can someone let me know if i have missed somthing here please? :ranting2: :ranting2::crying:
sounds like your doing everything right m8.
the propblem with the cpu client is it takes an age to complete work packets.
i would suggest adding the gpu client but they don't support your graffix card :sad: they support from the 8600 up.
as said before i am pretty sure you wont register your work untill you have completed you 1st work packet, and then it still takes a few hrs to update on their system.

My new desktop arrived just before Easter, so a couple of days ago I got started with GPU folding - and I must say, the results I get are really cool :D
Only thing I have to figure out now is how to get GPU folding on multiple cores (I have an ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 with two processors on the same card). Have been looking a bit into the guides at the F@H pages, and if I read things correctly; in Vista you actually have to have one monitor connected to each of the GPUs. I only have one monitor, but it can take different inputs at once, so perhaps I can trick it with just an extra dummy cable...

I've been racing on the dMr server for a few months, and had been intending to start folding for quite a while - and I finally have it up and running (first WU 225/1500).
No problems at all with the install and setup. I was able to get my forum name for the folding project.
Just a great idea - and satisfying for a guy with a Masters degree in Biology and former biology teacher.

I think you know I got it working Sunday morning - just before I had to go - I think it was you that told me about the Realtek sound muting the rear inputs, wasn't it?. Will try it again for this afternoon's race ..... problem though is I had to play with the sound settings to get sound back on PC after I left server, so I'll have to mess with settings again when I go back on ventrillo. But I'll get it :blink:

I 'pause' GPU folding when playing in game. As for CPU or SMP folding, I think it's down to the PC and how powerful it is. Mine copes ok with SMP folding and gaming.

I turn it off for all games I play, just in case. Had one time a fold turning in while playing CSS which screwed my graphics.

As for your PS3 - I feel your pain :sad:
The link below suggests several solutions for the turbo sound ...... but the best seems to be to return it to Sony (if it's still under warranty). Apparently some of them were made in China with defective fans.......

I'm easing off the Folding a bit. Although I'll still be contributing units, it won't be at such a high workrate as previous months. I've been hammering the PC's a while and they want a break.
I am hardly at home, but do run the GPU-client whenever the PC is on. I am doing 100-300 ppd.

Edit: Skip that. Bad corporate firewall + Win7 problems (SMP not working) makes that something I have to look into some other day... sheesh!
