Title: PCS re-launch
Post by: OldBloke on August 15, 2003, 01:41:32 PM
TeaLeaf and I are now actively working on the next stage of the evolution of the clan and PCS.

As such, the following changes will be happening in the near future:

1. Dead Men Walking will become a community-based clan.
2. PCS will be re-launched as TCS (Tactical Counter-Strike) with a new set of guidelines.
3. We will have a three-tiered membership structure.
4. The forum will be converted to IPB (http://www.invisionboard.com/).

Why?

1. By making dMw a badge of community it will formally recognise the fact that people want to play TCS in preference to deathmatch CS.
2. 'Professional Counter-Strike' does not accurately describe our style of play and has disuaded players from trying it in the past. Our present PCS Guidelines are far too heavyweight and just as likely to put off new members.
3. We need to provide a structure that recognises and values the skills that players bring to the clan. Members have left or become inactive purely because we fail to do this appropriately.
4. A new look and feel will highlight the changes mentioned above. IPB gives us that new look and, as well as having some very nice new fuctionality, it allows us the ability to devolve more forum responsibility to moderators. A test forum is here (http://www.deadmen.co.uk/~oldbloke/forum/).

The aim in all this is to see our two servers filled to the rafters every night with like-minded individuals having the best CS experience possible. The migration will require the help of many of you.

Watch this space ...  8)

The forum is sweet looking. Nice idea too, I think we are more of a community so it makes sense to get rid of the clan image, and let everyone just enjoy the game for what it is. Not that this wasn't the impression until now, but this new image states our purpose better.

We will still be a clan. But a clan based within a community not a clan bolted on the side of one.

As to the new forum ... yeah they're looking good.  8)

You can play around to your hearts's content on these by the way as they use a totally separate database to our live ones.

This weekend (hopefully) I will swing the forum over to the new version.

As we're not ready to launch TCS yet I will leave all references to PCS intact. The 'TCS' link in the menu will say 'Guidelines' and point to the existing PCS Guidelines webpage.

As you can no doubt see i've swung the forums over and fixed the first batch of teething problems.

Admins have been given the right to upload files which appear as attachments. Do not abuse this priviledge.

The old forum is available here (http://forum.deadmen.co.uk/indexold.php).

My next task is to try and sort out the member panel on the left. Not happy with the layout.

One thing I don't like about the forums is the icons telling if there have been a new post or if a thread is very active. They are all so similar in colours it is hard to see the new posts. Is it only me?

Would be nice with 2 pairs of different icons to separate them.

I've made a quick 'n' dirty change to the 'new posts' icons. They've now got a very 'in yer face' red border. Seems to work though.

OK. Next phase of the re-launch.

Stryker/Gandy ... can you two get together to work out how we can get P2 and Gandy's tool to meet the following requirements?

1. TCS member registration to include WONID.
2. Email back to member with server password and basic TCS guidelines.
3. Mass email to all registered TCS members for server password changes.
4. Ability for member to update their email details.
5. A simple way to disable P2 for matches etc.
6. A way to lookup a member's email address from a WONID.

I reckon most of that has already been completed but I'll leave you to tell me when you think it will be ready to rollout.

In the meantime ...

TeaLeaf is working on the TCS advert.
Sadako is reworking the guidelines.
OldBloke is defining the new structure.
Smite - can you come up with a TCS spray for community use?

Oh and here's a little snippet of info for you all. Under TCS we will be saying goodbye to map boundaries.   :coolio:

1. Done
2. Done
3. Can be exported via phpmyadmin to a text file for easy mailing, however I can create some admin only pages to automate this.
4. Done
5. ? Stryker!
6. Again, easy via phpmyadmin, but as it's very powerful and you can cause major damage with this I'll come up with an admin page to do this too.

Oh sweet, finally I can dust off my gimp suit

Erm, how to turn off P2?  are there any nice winblowz users point and drool interfaces for doing that?  It is only a plugin after all.

w00t !!! Note to self: pratice watching one's a-rse. That will be good actually, the comfort factor of PCS boundaries makes us a little relaxed on other servers and in reality, if we need to watch for flanking, we should have someone playing reargaurd, more realistic.  ;)

The goalposts have been moved (removed actually) ....

New criteria:

1. TCS member registration to include SteamID.
2. Email back to member with server password and basic TCS guidelines.
3. Mass email to all registered TCS members for server password changes (Admin only).
4. Ability for member to update their email details.
5. A way to lookup a member's email address from a SteamID (Admin only).

The P2 functionality looks like a non-starter. I've checked the website and the author isn't responding to calls for 1.6 compatibility. Someone with a bit of savvy tried to tweak the existing install but, unlike WONIDs, SteamIDs are not presented to the server at time of connection.  <_<

So, dropping the P2 side of things - what's the timescales?

ok, well I can tweak the sign-up pages to take steam id instead of won ID.

The database is independant anyway, it was designed to have P2 plug into it. It will happily run as a stand alone unit.

heh, you can go back there with the username and password you entered and change your own e-mail address.

Don't worry too much though as it's only in trial stages and the database will be scrubbed when I make changes and when it goes live.
