I've ordered a Blu-ray player but, naturally, don't have any disks to try on it. A quick trawl around Play, Amazon etc and it seems there's no real bargains to be had there. So ...
Where's the place for cheap BDs?
Play do 3 disks for £30. Or so I've been told. It's apparently the cheapest place for them . (my brother has bought quite a collection already so I assume he's grasped the pricing side of things already - they still seem expensive to me)
there are no cheap BDs use dvds lol
if you can get to one of the last woolworths tomorrow you could get a good bargin, guy in my local store in ireland last week got 20 blu ray discs with films ranging from the mummy to casino royale for £120
There are many sites that sell BDs but you should be careful what you buy as there are differences between releases (if you are picky). First of all I recommend you to read about the US release on http://www.blu-ray.com/ as they review sometimes more than one release of each film. They also give you a good headsup on the quality of the transfer to BD. One example is that the first transfer of Fifth Element sucks big time and the "remastered" is a piece of art. So it is worth the read.
The difference between the UK or US print is usually the various audio tracks on the BD. UK releases tend to be missing the PCM (uncompressed audio) track whereas the US includes it. Look at this example Underworld (UK release) (http://www.axelmusic.com/productDetails/5017239120015) and Underwold (US release) (http://www.axelmusic.com/productDetails/043396216143).
For good prices and region ALL BDs I can recommend

Lol cool, had no idea Axel Music was doing so well :D

It is quite nice isn't it. However, buying from the .dk site it is actually more expensive then from the .com due to greater shipping costs in combination with the danish crowne is expensive atm.

Heck, you almost drive past the shop everyday... Unless that price is for internet only deals?

That I don't know. You can run over and check. ;) The store in Roskilde is closed btw.
As ill be getting a blue-ray drive for my laptop soon ive found tescoentertainment (http://www.deadmen.co.uk/forum/www.tescoentertainment.com) & Play.com (http://www.play.com/DVD/Blu-ray/6-/RegionHome.html) some of the best prices around.
Thanks for the feedback guys. Much appreciated.

Sure you can buy e.g. Underworld from Play for £10 but the release is different from the better US one. So it all boils down to how picky you are.
I would like to remind that the ongoing war on the BR protections will affect the player. So be sure that you can update the player. Nothing more in vain than a player that is 3 months old and can't play certain movies.

I'm watching this thread with interest but thought i'd chip in.
Lex which manufacturers and what protections are currently in place?
Surely a pc bluray drive won't need to be updated as i've never needed to install a patch for my dvdrw.
I know there are different formats for DVD but i think their might be one's for bluray too. Luckily my dvd player purchase was a multi region after entering a code so i would imagine bluray will be the same.
For cheap bluray disks i'd agree its difficult to find them at a low price but hopefully during this year at least prices will begin to go down.
I too want a bluray player but don't want to be left out to dry by being an early adopter. So, I am holding off for a burner at least but a hddvd/ bluray player looks promising as a pc drive for my next pc build in the summer.
Currently as far as i am aware there is some licensing issues with sony not allowing too many people from using the bluray technology as fewer copycat companies have launched bluray drives or players. The home entertainment system bluray player is much more expensive than the bluray pc drive but i suppose this is due to the lack of licensing. The toshiba multiblu looks like a good buy with both bluray and hddvd options.
You can get a descent blueray drive for a pc for £80 i cant see them getting much cheaper tbh. And i can get the 25gb disc's for £5 each although thats still pretty expensive :(.
I think it is mainly BD+ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BD%2B) protection that Slysoft is hunting with their AnyDVD HD proggram that can crack it. And ofc the movie studios are trying to make it better, so it is a cat and mouse game basicly. Which will mean more firmware updates to machines.
And like ps3 is really easy to update but some players might not.
There are three regions for BD: A, B and C. There are very few BD players that could become region free with just the remote. Most of those are only for the DVD regions and not the BD regions. There is a ICOS mod kit that can be installed in most standard BDs that will make the player region free for both DVD and BD. However, it requires soldering of components and how difficult that is depends on the player.

I got an LG one fromn Ebuyer for around £65 (DVD was playing up so thought i would upgrade at the same time) it's only a player, but its quicker than the Sony equivalent and also plays HD disks (not that i need it) as soon as i plugged it in and installed the provided drivers, i tried to play a bluray film, didn't work, but there was a 100meg+ patch (which it automatically picked up) and worked fine :)
(sorry for going slightly off topic)
The wife was out shopping (well, I can't) and some supermarkets do unadvertised deals of 2 for £20. On the PS3, I found the BD Transformers a step above any form of it I've seen before, the wife preferred it to the cinema version. Without having to stand on a sticky popcorn carpet or wade through the toilet.
And we're having the lounge floor relaid, so I can finally replace the speaker cables that got cut when we laid the last one (thanks, dear) so the rear speakers will work again.
Okay, so now my (TV) DVD player has decided not to speak to me anymore (no sound) what bluray player did you get OB?

I went for the Sony BDP-S350 (http://www.sony.co.uk/product/blu-ray-disc-player/bdp-s350)
QuoteSlim and stylish this next generation Blu-ray Player makes Home Entertainment as close as it can be to the original theatrical experience â€" with 1080p Full HD picture quality, 24p True Cinema and High Definition surround sound.
Buy it anywhere (170GBP seems to be the cheapest) and register it with Sony before the 15th Jan to get two free BDs - Batman Begins and Casino Royal
I have a Panasonic BD35 that I will make region free this weekend. I can recommend that one as well.

I have the same player here. Multi-region DVD now, but I decided against going for the chip-mod just yet to make it region-free Bluray too as I do not have any other than 'my region' BD discs.
TL.
