About time some1 mentioned watchmen tbh :D

I am a massive fan of the graphic novel (currently re-reading it and halfway trough it), and I am highly anticipating this movie. From what I have seen so far it will be amazing.

I am a bit worried about the ending of the movie though, which is said to have been altered, since the original supposedly didn't work as well in a movie. The ending in the graphic novel was brilliant and really worked well, so fingers crossed the new ending will work just as well ^^

Try and pick up the book before watching the movie, I am sure you will enjoy the movie even more once you discover all the matching things ;)

Yup the book is called watchmen (mind you it's a comic story spanning 12 issues), but it has been collected in both a paperback and hard cover version.
(I got my hard cover at Selexyz Donner.)

Trade Paper Bag:

Hard Cover:

btw, Watchmen is the only Comic Book that is in the Time top 100 of books, so you can be assured it's a good read ;)

I still have hope it'll be all good. I read an interview with Zack Snyder where he said that the Hollywood execs involved said the ending of the graphic novel was too much of a downer and they needed a happy ending for the film. He apparently told them that if they forced a change of the style and feel of the ending of the novel onto the film he'd walk off the project. That being said, he did also say they had changed exactly what the thing that happened at the end of the film *was*, because they didnt feel the one in the book resonated as a fear with people today in the same way it had when the novel came out.

yeah, I was gonna mention the Fox thing. I strongly doubt it won't get released. One way or the other, WB has to release it to try and make back the cash spent during production. Even if that means they give a massive chunk of revenue to Fox and only end up breaking even, it's stil better than being severla hundred million in the red.

With the Warner Bros - Fox lawsuit settled, WB must have felt like having a little party and updated the official watchmen website.

Most of the trailers so far had little dialog in it, and this website contains a fair amount of dialog for all the main characters. Rorschachs bit is especially bliss to the watchmen fans.

Each of the character pages has a different backing track and I must say I am quite impressed with the score so far, it seems really fitting.

Anyways, enough of me talking, go and visit the official watchmen movie website (http://watchmenmovie.warnerbros.com/)to check it out for yourself! :D

Will check those out soon but would have been better I reckon when I would have bought them in a paperback or such. So far so good.

Saw this on Saturday and thought it was excellent! Went with a large group of friends and we universally thought it was good. Even my girlfriend, who hasn't read the book and thus was our test subject for whether the movie held up on it's own merits, loved it. Having said that, coming out of the cinema I did overhear one of the staff saying that he'd not heard anyone saying good things about it thus far. I quickly told him we all loved it, but I do wonder if a large number of people are going to see it expecting a slightly dark superhero movie, a la Dark Knight, and Watchmen simply isn't about that. The action plays a very small part to the main meat of the movie and book, which i've always seen as an interesting look at the darker sides of the human psyche.

I, as a watchmen fan, loved the movie, but I could tell the movie didn't go well with most of the "normal" audience. We even had about 12/15 people walk out of the movie and half the cinema emptied when the camera panned out in the end (the bit before the crank file part).

Did you have a lot of people walk out before the end too?

Not really. I was sat quite near the front so there may have been some I missed, but the cinema was still pretty packed when the credits started to roll and I got up and looked around.

But it is the big new release, so that's kinda to be expected. The big teller for my money will be how long it *stays* there, and how good the DVD sales are when they come out.

Right first of all, I'd never heard of this before seeing the trailer in the cinema. I had no idea what it was about before going to see it. I thought it was amazing. Loads of grity detail, great graphics, really top notch sound track.
I have to say the best aspects of this film were the way it completely ignored the traditional movie code of ethics. There was plenty of unnessesary violence towards women, a plot that even though I could see bits of it coming delivered itself at a really nice pace, with plenty to keep the viewer entertained.

That said my housemate didn't like it especially. He said it was "good" though. I imagine he needs another watch to absorb the plot.

9/10.

I saw this last night, I'd wanted to read the graphic novel for ages but never got round to it, as it happens I ordered it the other day & it turned up yesterday. As for the film I thought it was awesome, the more I role the film around in my mind the more I like it, & i'll agree with most of what T-Bag had to say about it.

Finally a comic book type of film thats not targeted towards getting as many kids into the cinema as possible.

This & the Dark Knight have been just about the only 2 films I've seen at the cinema that I could happily go back & watch again.

Apparently in the US some bloke shot himself during the premiere.  TBH, don't blame him - comics are not movies, and never will be - this proved it.  Loved the comic, thought the film was not worth it.

I was thinking the same thing, I musta been watching a differant film, xmen are ok films, but it's possibly not even fair to compare them.

Exactly. To compare the two shows that you've not seen Watchmen. It's a truely stunning film. It's rated 18, X-Men is rated 12. There's a reason for the difference. The target audience for X-Men is teenagers, whereas Watchmen is aimed at adults. The altered timeline and some of the aspects of the plot would go way over the heads of kids who go in wanting to watch their favourate character get into a scrap with someone else in a funny costume. Both films have their place, but they don't overlap.

I doubt anyone will every truly capture the book as a movie, it's not been called "unfilmable" for so long for nothing...

I got told the other day that the directors cut of the dvd type things gonna be an hour longer than the cinema release.
Title: Watchmen
Post by: Carr0t on April 18, 2009, 08:01:18 PM
Well, apart from any extra scenes in the film itself, I believe the directors cut is going to have cut through it the animated Pirate film that was released on DVD when the film came out. The one that is a comic book a kid is reading through the actual comic. And for that to make any sense there'd ahve to be some involvement of the characters it comes via. Also, I recall someone saying in an interview that the Hollis Mason scene (you know the one I mean, if you've read the book) was the most graphic and grim thing they'd ever filmed, and that wasn't in the cinema either.
