Add: bind "button" "toggleconsole"
[button=any keyboard button you wish to bind console to.]
2- In game, go to options and enable "Developer console".

[Problem] How do I bring up the server browser?
[Solution] Go to your left4dead\cfg folder and open config.cfg. Add: bind "button" "openserverbrowser".
[button=any keyboard button you wish to bind the server browser to.]
Server browser doesn't work in non steam versions, it will show up but not function.
[Problem] I can't see my or any servers in lobby, even if we are in same lan/hamachi.
[Solution] Make sure server and client is using sv_lan 0, make sure all use the latest hamachi version, some how it seems like Vista machines wont find any servers in lobby but XP users will find. If you did the above and you can't find any servers type connect ip:port in console.
[Problem] I get Class C error when I try to join
[Solution] Make sure you use latest hamachi and sv_lan is 0. Then type connect ip:port.
[Problem] I get connection timed our after 10 retries.
[Solution] Make sure server port is forwarded and firewalls are configured / turned off.
[Problem] My L4D is crashing to desktop.
[Solution] #1- If you use Vista, disable visual themes when running the game.
#2- Disable V-Sync in advanced video options.
#3- Turn off Multicore in advance video options.
#4- Make sure Steam Cloud is disabled. [see next problem]
[Problem] Cannot get rid of Steam cloud - Game keeps crashing!
[Solution] If you left Steam Cloud checked and cannot run the game without it crashing:
1- Go to Registry Key in regedit:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Steam\Apps\1\Cloud
It will have a default value of 0x00007fff (32767) meaning steam cloud is enabled
2- Set the value to 0 to disable steam cloud.
-OR-
delete this key and the dialog box will pop up again next time you run left4dead.exe.
update
You just bring up your console and type "openserverbrowser"

Edited in case. I thought there was a non-steam version of L4D?
To my knowledge DVD versions are still steam based, I could be wrong though.

I'm not sure either. I bought the DVD version but never installed it; I just used the key and entered that into Steam and it downloaded all the files I needed.
people can play the dvd based game without steam according to my mate who does just that and its an orginal

I'm aware it's possible, but I'm also pretty sure it's in breach of some licence agreement or other, as by default the DVD will install steam.. :sideways:
Not to mention that 99% of people using Hamachi to play L4D will be using some nosteam copy off Pirate Bay in any case.
can somebody help me with console?
I trying to push ~ but nothing happens. So I think I have to write something on the icon, like in CS:S. I mean that -applaunch240 - I think this was that.
sorry, I didn't read below
Xenon, have you tried turning on the developer console in your game options?
