Title: IMDB Top 250
Post by: Benny on January 24, 2009, 03:49:21 PM
Now I've got commuting time on my hands I've started watching a lot more 'stuff'. I've finished House, Green Wing, Blood Diamond, The Nines (can't remember who suggested that and I still can't decide if I liked it).

Anyway, hunting for inspiration found this list and for someone who used to watch a lot, before the internet turned up, I'm disappointed by what I haven't seen.

Don't know if I agree with it, but it's a start. That or I try 'The Wire', CSI or some of the older comms to get through the monotony of 1.5 hours on the train everyday!

I watch alot of different stuff.

I'd suggest as possibilities robot chicken as its short with episode around 10 minutes each episode with some twisted but hilarious sketches.

The Simpsons as a possibility as i haven't watched the older ones so am now trawling through them gradually.

The epic 24 series. The latest season number 7 is simply awesome if you haven't tried that yet grab boxset 1 and try that for starters.

The Uk office with ricky gervais and all of his spin off shows such as politics animals.

Maybe lost could also be an idea. Haven't seen iy myself

What sort of films do you like benny. Give me a couple of films you like as examples and i'll let you know ones i have watched that could be suitable.

The wire is really good so definately give it a try, I also recommend watching the american office (especially the third season) I watched every episode in less than a week as I found it so entertaining.

Ayo, lesson here, Bey. You come at the king, you best not miss. - Omar

Great films I've seen recently:
In Bruges, Superbad, Rescue Dawn

Great TV shows everyone should obsess over:
The Wire, The Sopranos, The Shield, the new Battlestar Galactica

Also check out Flight of the Conchords if you can - when it hits the mark it's absolutely hilarious.

That should kill some time Benny.

Chan-wook Parks vengeance trilogy (Sympathy for Mr Vengeance, Oldboy, Lady Vengeance) and I'm a Cyborg but that's OK.

Wasn't that impressed by Rescue Dawn tbh.

I've just acquired Oldboy, no subs though so will need to try again. I've posted elsewhere on what I got through today...Keeps it rolling along nicely.

Ah well I enjoyed it - always liked Christian Bale, and Werner Herzog can make some interesting stuff.  Which reminds me, he also made a documentary called "Grizzly Man" about a guy who goes to live with bears in Alaska.  Has to be one of the best documentary films I ever watched.

Although there is the always questionable aspect of Herzog. He has more than once stated that a good movie comes before true fact and when asked if Grizzly Man was fake, he just smiled and did not answer.

Not heard that, but there are enough media reports of what happened to the guy to make me believe it really happened.  Regardless though it was a cracking couple hours of entertainment.

Nurse, paddles, stat.......charge, clear.....bumped.

I just wanted to say as I get to the end of the first series of The Wire, that it is absolutely superb. Singley one of the best TV shows/series I've seen. I've heard good things about The Unit and The Shield, so am thinking I'll finish The Wire over the next week or so then hit those.

If you haven't watched The Wire, do so.

The Wire gets better. Just wait to seasons 3-5 (2 was a bit anemic IMHO).

The Unit is absolute **** IMHO, some good action to pass the time but real bad acting/scripting. Good for an AXN channel, not more.

The Shield is superb. I would say it ranks with the Wire as the best two TV serieses - again, IMO.

Another good ones are Life on Mars (with the most brilliant ending) and Ashes to Ashes (haven't seen series 3 yet).

Rebump. All 5 series of The Wire finished. I'll say it again, if you haven't seen this, go buy it, you won't be disappointed. There's no heroes, not happy endings and it's pretty grim in places, but the weave of tales between the series, the shock changes in direction and everything else in it make it the best thing I've watched in a *very* long time.

I'm hitting American Gangster for the next day or so, then will try The Shield, but am worried it won't live up to The Wire. Failing that I'll try Boardwalk Empire, by the same director I believe.

Surprised to see Dexter hasn't been mentioned. There are three whole series of Breaking Bad available, both air around 12 episodes per season.

So, as above

Breaking Bad (3 whole series)
Fringe (series 3 just started)
Dexter (Series 5 just started airing)
Day Break (one off series to a conclusion, not vampires)
My Own Worst Enemy (1 series, cancelled, but was promising and worth watching)
Regenesis (4 seasons then cancelled for some reason)

Should be enough for you to be getting on with.

'Dexter', 'Fringe' and 'Breaking Bad' will be readily available through the usual channels :flirty:, the others I'm not too sure about.

Edit: Did anyone mention "Charlie Jade", if not, add that to the list.

The big bang theory

This is one funny show.  It's quite informative as well.
