Title: L4D DLC - survival pack
Post by: kregoron on February 06, 2009, 11:40:45 AM
Oh yay GG valve..

Soon Valve will release the first dlc (download content) pack for L4D, and after reading their news post and what was written on their IRC chan, it seems the Survival pack as its being dubbed, is gonna cost the same as the original game -.-
QuoteThe first L4D DLC â€" dubbed the L4D Survival Pack -- is due for release this spring and introduces a new multiplayer game mode entitled, Survival, plus two complete campaigns for Versus Mode . A Critic's Choice Edition of the game will be heading to retail stores this spring, and will include access to all the content introduced in the L4D: Survival Pack.
1 new mode and two new survival maps -.- doesnt really justify a pricetag of the original game does it... GG valve

But isn't that just a new retail version including the updates and there'll be a Steam update to existing customers?:g:

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=798179

Update: Due to a miscommunication, we had updated the original piece saying that PC and Xbox 360 Survival Packs would be paid. However, Valve has since told Edge that it hasn't ruled out the possibility of the price being "$0.00." Sorry for any confusion.

In my honest oppinion, the difference in a dlc and a expansion is:

dlc is a minor content extension free for download, in the sense of a developer mod.

Expansion major content entension, bringing several new features and levels to a game.. Costing a fair amount of money..

So what is this upcoming extension.. Its not a dlc as it isnt free, and it isnt really a expansion as it just doesnt contain enough new stuff

Interesting, ruled out the possibility that pricing being 0... same thing is saying we dont really know yet..

After getting irritated about this new last night, i decided to email valve with a dim hope of actually getting a respons, tho i actually got one..

Here is part of the message.

QuoteDear Kim

We are sorry to hear your frustration about the latest news about the L4D DLC pack, and we are aware that others feel just like you do.
Im sure the department which handles pricing, are rethinking their pricing strategy after the enourmous amount of negative respons, they are after that announcement.
I hope for your sake they decide to change the pricing to 0.

Dearest.
Michael Langston
Representative of Valve Customer Relations.

Judging by everything thats happened to the PC version of TF2 I wouldn't get too wound up yet. Let them state they'll be charging before getting worked up. There have been new game modes, maps and other goodies in that all done for free.
I think everyone needs to take a step back and breathe. If I had to guess I'd imagine the Xbox 360 users will get shafted, and PC users should be ok.

They posted this over @ Bit-Tech;

The update, headed to both Xbox 360 and PC versions of the game, will include the as yet un-detailed “Survivor” game mode, which we wouldn’t be too surprised if it turns out to be something along the lines of the very popular Horde mode in Gears of War 2 or the Zombie Survival bonus level in Call of Duty: World at War, with the survivors defending a single position against ever increasing mountains of enemies.

The new versus content, currently described as just two new campaigns, will likely be the much anticipated versus play of the original’s Dead Air and Death Toll campaigns which was left out of the retail release â€" good news for those who enjoy the glee of authorised griefing with the help of 40ft prehensile tongues and exploding fatties.

The update will also bring with it the much anticipated Left 4 Dead SDK, finally allowing the mod community to start creating its own campaigns and levels â€" something that Left 4 Dead, with its limited four campaigns, has been crying out for.

No news on release dates or pricing yet, but we thoroughly expect Valve to release the pack as a free update as it has done previously with new content and maps for Team Fortress 2.

The more players on 1 side the more tanks and witches you get to somewhat level out the difficulty, or at least so it seams.

Sometimes the director seams to be going a bit mental thou, had 3 witches, 2 tanks and 2 hordes on the final level of expert, before we even started the final fight. :sideways:

Also the swapping of players is still a bit weird but then again, it's Steambased!

From CSN ...

QuoteAs expected, the new versus mode campaigns will be the versus adaptations of Dead Air and Death Toll. These two campaigns were omitted in the versus lineup at the game's launch for unknown reasons. It should be noted that these campaigns are already playable in a versus format with a small bit of tweaking, and only on the PC version.

BB - any idea on the bit in bold? We somehow managed to do this by accident the other night but I have no idea how we achieved it.

Wouldn't mind it happening again since it's a fun campaign :D

The recently announced downloadable content for Left 4 Dead will be free on both the PC and Xbox 360 versions of the game. Valve has just sent out this press release that should clear up any confusion.

QuoteThe recently announced Left 4 Dead Downloadable Content (L4D DLC) will be delivered to Xbox 360 and PC gamers free of charge.

Due for release this spring, the DLC for 2008's best-selling new game property on the PC and Xbox 360, is dubbed the L4D Survival Pack and introduces a new multiplayer game mode entitled, Survival, plus two complete campaigns for Versus Mode (Death Toll, Dead Air).

Couple of videos are also available here:

http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/dor/objects/875936/left-4-dead/videos/l4d_gmp_dlc_airport_survivormode.html

These videos are interesting as they show how lfd displays on the xbox 360. Its a shame we can't have the same backwards compatibility with the 360 controller as with the xbox basically that the screen shows the same as you can see in the video on a pc if you enable the gamepad controller. This would help when using the controller as currently its simply a guessing game as the screen stays the same. Other games detect the 360 controller and adapt the menus to look as though you were using a 360.

Maybe in the dlc this will move to the pc too?

Any news on a release date yet?

All I can say is I'm glad I'm a PC gamer not a console player. The control of some of them seemed a bit roboty. A keyboard and mouse add-on for the console would fix that. Actually has anyone tried L4D with a mouse on a 360. I hope they left support in. My housemate plays on a 360 with the bots because he doesn't have XBox Live Gold (or whatever you need). I might ask him to check.

I'm looking forward to this patch now!! (But we still need more campaigns)

Definately one to play with humes rather than bots. They are just too stupid. Also good-voice comms and tight team-work required to survive, no dashing off to get stuff on your own. That is a recipe for disaster and team death as they try to rescue you.

I think start off in one section for a couple of rushes, clearing it out of goodies, and then moving on to the next one for a couple of rushes etc. Systematic use of resources.

Tanks come early and often so keep some pipe-bombs handy to keep the normal infected out of the way while you deal with the Tank.

I'm a little dissapointed in the new maps, I forget the name of it but you start in the church - when you get down into the streets you'd think with all those buildings around it'd be ideal for hunters, but half the buildings are missing - they've not bothered with the roofs so you can't really use the buildings at all, a bit shoddy I think valve.

You had a ping of 5 the rest of us were on 305 and  were moaning.

And yes Jewelz we did get a fair number of Golds and silvers. I think we made a pretty good team, with some original tactics (some plain crazy), and some good team work. There was no hogging the health packs or nades when we were on our good runs.
