Title: Xbox 360 gamepad for Windows Desktop Pc [Wired Variant]
Post by: GhostMjr on February 07, 2009, 10:06:49 PM
Hi all,

I have since the October 2008 LAN been torn between grabbing one of these for my pc and not. Spudgun showed me and let me test his at the last LAN and i was simply amazed. The ability to have a microsoft device with reliable drivers was simply a dream as previously I had tried the ps2 controller to usb setup which came with conflicting drivers for both 64 bit xp and with windows 32 bit the piece of plastic from china was hopeless making cars and bikes swerve and weave due to the poor calibration even after fiddling in game.

I got the xbox controller this week and it was a simple doddle to install. I opened the plastic vacuum formed packaging plugged it in hoping i wouldn't have to use the drivers cd and xp instantly recognised the device and installed the appropraite drivers.

I can now play the likes of the new burnout, need for speed undercover and even LFS (with some tweaking) on the new pad. I have even played lfd and tf2 on the pad so when you see me on lfd i may be using a games console controller instead of a mouse and keyboard. Price was £17.99 from our affiliates amazon. It's got me immersed in racing games and i am really enjoying them once again. The last serious play through of a racing game i played was back in Grand Prix 2 by Microprose. Fingers crossed it works with race 07 and a few other favourites such as GTR2 that i couldn't seem to grasp with the keyboard controls.

Pc magazines regularly criticise games for needing a controller and from never owning a console i could see their point. However the controller has opened up a whole new level of gaming for me and is a high initial cost but as its a microsoft product i hope until the new xbos comes along at least it will be compatible with many more titles.

Thought i'd share this with you as its certainly my hardware buy of the month :D

[Not sure if this is more suited in buyer feedback or here in the software/ hardware main forum]

being a pre console man, i have tried every joypad known to man, and to be fair to microsoft the development into the xbox controller took years, it does make me laugh when i read pc magazines which rate controllers made by have a go pc manufactures which get a better score, all the new 2008 on ward games have the xbox controller mapped ready for use, games like devilmay cry, burnout paradise, gears of war, call of duty 4-5 even flight sim 2008 has xbox controller ready, it really is the best pad by a long long way.:D

I've had my fair share of gamepads. They were always a pain in the arse. Having to select the controls manually, some of the buttons not recognised by some games. etc etc.
I bought a 360 pad (wired version) when it first came out for PC a few years back. I saw it on amazon saying "PC or Xbox". It was great, plenty of support. But in the last year or two it's entered a whole new realm of awesome. Every "Games for Windows" game (as far as I've tested and I've played a good number) seems to pick up the controller straight away and it works straight off. Not only this but navigating the menus changes to showing the XBox buttons so you can quickly navigate.
Best controller I've ever had by a long way. If you play GTA IV or something else with even the slightest bit of driving/flying in it's a must, the keyboard can only do so much without "Triggers".

If they're the usb variants for pc then Ninja might be interested. He was thinking of buying a couple so how many have you got?

I'd consider another one if you have 3 or 4?

Nice!

I haven't done much of anything with it since 2005, but I had this in my archive:
