Title: Forum Permissions - Bug Track
Post by: smilodon on February 10, 2009, 02:22:54 AM
As you have probably seen the new forum structure is up, thanks Penfold.

I've re worked all the forum permissions to match the new forum structure. It's a less tha straightforward job to do this on a live forum and it's a fair bet some people will find themselves unable to to access everything they should.

As of tonight the Green Badge Banter, and Supporting Member Chat forums are still not fully functional. You're going to get your access by way of a cool automated system that grants forum permissions as the specific green badge gets awarded.

Also some of the server admin forums may not be fully configured. Give me a day and it 'should' be working. With the exception of the above if you do find yourself with either restricted or broken access to any areas please post the detail here.

Thanks all

{PEN adds - Please note that there are now no Bravo or Charlie sections so you won't be able to see them. There is also no Dead Men Teams forum as they've been moved to the relevant game threads. Dead Men Folding has also been moved to Community.}

Last night at ca. 11.20 the main forum page showed the new section "Badge Holder Banter"... This is no longer showing for me this morning.

There was a short period between Penfold creating the new forums and me setting up the permissions. During this time most of the new areas were open to all. Now that the permissions are done these areas will disappear... for a bit.

There are several forums that are restricted to certain members i.e. there are forums for all the green badge holders, for members of specific game communities, for supporting members and for various admins.

We need to add all these people to their respective user groups which in turn will provide access to the various forums. Rather than Penfold and I going insane by adding them all manually (they run into the hundred of people) Gandy is writing some scripts that will automate this. So for example if Whitey awards you the CS green gaming badge in the future you will automatically gain access to the Green badge holders forum and to a couple of CS specific forums (match tactics etc). It won't need me to manually add you to the various user groups.

These scripts take a little planning and so they will be done over the next few days. Until then some access will not be working. By the weekend it will all be working fine  and I'll be in therapy :)

Thanks for the imput though.

Blunt - I'll tell Smilo

Dan - Permissions are being worked for people to access the relevant privcate chat areas (such as Badge Holders Banter and Supporting Members Chat).

These are being controlled by a script which Gandy made and which run today I believe. Once that is done, hopefully it'll all fall into place.

you're not alone!!!

Actually what is being said is about correct. There are the following sections

Dead Men Walking - The Community Everyone should be able to see this area. If not turn on your monitor :)

Private Chat Forums Should be visible to a few people (some admins) but not the majority. Will become viewable to anyone with a Green Badge or a Supporters Badge very soon.

dMw Gaming Everyone should be able to see this area. A few forums will only be viewable by CS Green badge holders and our WOW guild members.

dMw Community Centre Everyone should be able to see this

dMw Admins Some game admins can see in here and some can't at the moment. Soon all admins will be able to see their forums and can talk as much geek admin rubbish as they like :)

Thanks for letting us know.

I refer the honourable gentlemen to the above post.

It is currently being working on. Once we *think* it's sorted we'll post up an announcement and then those who are still having permission issues can let us know.

I confident that Smilo will respond to this with his usual alacrity and it'll all be tickety-boo forthwith.

Ok we're into the final stretch now. All the script requirements have been sorted and will be written out and uploaded to the site soon. When they are run the rest of the new forum content should be visible. Gandy is kindly writing all these scripts (and there are quite a few) in his spare time. So thanks to him :yahoo:

They're not  quite done. The Devil conspired against us and just as we were working on the forums the network goes all insane and the servers drop to a crawl. BlueBall, Oldbloke and Gandy spend several days tearing their hair out and get it fixed. So while Gandy is working away on the network issues he's not working away on the scripts. I think they assumed you'd all prefer to have the servers running nice and fast rather than the forums being all sorted. :)

The scripts have been tested on the Test Forum and they seem to work fine. Tomorrow looks good for Gandy to run them on the live Forum. Fingers crossed this time tomorrow we should all be done.

I'm was tempted to do the forum permissions manually tonight but it's a massive task and I'd still be at it now. The automated system is going to be the best way to do it by far. It also means that the whole system will require no human intervention in the future. You get a new badge and you get access to any new forums straight away.

This means the forum runs itself and I can then retire :norty:

Just to clarify ...

The scripts run on an hourly schedule so you might have to wait an hour for your new permissions to be activated.

Once again thanks to Gandalf and Smilodon. They have literally spent days this week - and I mean days - getting this ready to go. :worshippy::worshippy:

Ok the permissions are live and I refuse to believe that everyone can see the bit's they're supposed to see etc etc. That's not the script, that's me trying to get the forum permissions correct in the first place.

Please let me know in this thread if you think you should have acces to an area  you cannot.

To summarise.

Anyone with a green or red badge should be able to see badge holders banter
Anyone with a black supporters badge should be able to see Supporters chat
Anyone with a red or green CS badge should be able to see CS:S private chat
Anyone with a green or red WOW badge should be able to see Members Only in the DMR raiding section
Anyone with a red WOW badge should be able to see Council in the DMR Raiding sectionAnyone with a red game badge (CS, CoD4, L4D abd dMr game admin) should be able to see into their own game admin forum and public admin forum in the dMw Admin Section of the forum
Anyone who is CS public admin should be able to see into the CS public admin forum in the dMw admin section. (only CS have public admins and so only the use the public admin forum)

If you think you're not getting what you should from the above please shout.

Why do I need a moderator to check my posts in the CoD4 admin section?
Title: Forum Permissions - Bug Track
Post by: smilodon on February 12, 2009, 10:36:16 PM
Have you read some of your posts?

Seriously that's what this thread is for. Each user has about fifty individual setting and each forum has about thirty different user group permissions. I just ticked the wrong box for CoD4 Game Admins. Now I've ticked the right box.

Thanks

Next mistake please..... :)

By the orders of the mighty leaders of our community and as mentioned before I believe by Penfold in another post about the changes.

Supporting members get the ability to store 250 posts, non supporting members get 5.
Supporting members can also
upload attachments to the forum
have a signature file beneath their posts including a graphic
have an avatar next to their name
open and upload to a personal forum photo gallery

Even I subscribed last night and the mighty forum computer has burst into life, assigned me the black and gold £ badge for supporters and added me to the supporters user group so I too get the goodies.

No sorry Ghosty, they were accidentally deleted.

OK, that's not strictly true. The relevant game strategy posts from Charlie and Bravo have been, or soon will be, copied into the relevant new gaming forum. Whitey said he's going to copy across any tip 'n' tricks he wants to keep.

The other stuff - such as banter - not too sure. A decision has yet to be made on it.

Title: Forum privilege bug
Post by: Bob on February 22, 2009, 08:37:49 PM
I came over something that might be a bug somewhere in the privilege for the various forum sections. I was googling for silver oak guardians (http://www.google.com/search?q=silver+oak+guardians), and the first hit I got lead me to this page (http://www.deadmen.co.uk/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=130). As you can see this is a page under the "Old Server Admin Section", which I assume is something that not too many people should have access too (at least not a search bot :g:).

Now the problem doesn't seem to be too big: I can not follow the bread-crumbs list to neither "Old Server Admin Section" nor "Archived Topics", but I can click on any of the sub-forums on this page. However, if I try to access any of the posts, this is denied.

So - it is not a major problem, but I thought I should let you know, as it possibly might be this way for other sections as well.
