I've been playing on one particular CoD5 server a lot lately. It is the 3PIR Crouch Server (193.47.83.170:28937) the idea being that you are only allowed to move when crouched or prone (unless you are directly under fire from artillery, are being attacked by dogs or a grenade lands near you). This slows the game down a lot and makes it MUCH more tactical; the scope for teamplay is huge and I haven't enjoyed myself gaming so much for ages. They only use TDM on the server but, to be honest, that isn't a problem as there is no "run and gun" element.
In my opinion we SERIOUSLY need to look at doing something like this with one of our CoD4 servers (the private one maybe) to improve teamplay because at the moment teamwork is appalling because the game is played too fast.
The rules that 3PIR have, which work well, are:
No running unless under direct arty fire, being attacked by dogs or a grenade lands near you.
You MUST crouch or go prone to move.
Standing is allowed (to see or fire over things) but you musn't stand and move (ie no walking with sights up to eyes)
No Martyr
No Last Stand
No Rockets/Bazookas
No Grenade Launchers
Obviously we would need to replace Artillery/Dogs with Helicopters/Airstrikes but the principle is the same. An additional benefit is that people cannot reach map flaws because they are not allowed to run to jump high :)
You're thoughts please?
I DO LIKE THAT! :D Now that's the dMw way. In fact it's very exciting, bring it on. :yahoo:
I have no idea what that means (I'm a crap CoD4 player) other than it seems to address the way most Multi player versions of FPS's are designed with the concept that 90% of players will be on publics and tactics etc are not really something to think about. CS was a good game but TCS is a great game. CoD4 is a good game but CCoD4 (Creepy CoD4) sounds like genius and I'd even think about coming back to it if the 'spawn, bang, your dead - repeat for ever' mayhem was curbed.
It would be nice to give it a try. I'd love to play a more tactical game of CoD4.
Creepy CoD4
You will need to turn HC off or TDM would be the only mode I would think would work as some maps can take one minute to go from end to end.
But if you boys will come back to COD for it. Stick a Creepy CoD4 Server up and see how if fairs:g:
I could stick another server up rather than mess with the Private one if you think that would be better Arm?
make a new one bb. We could try it sunday night
Server ready.

CoD4 right? No dogs or artillery I'm thinking. :g:
Pete! How will you manage without rockets?:lmfao:

Sounds like a plan. Personally I think walking sighted up is probably fine but I'll happily give it a go. Anything for more team work
Moved thread from Section Admin area to Game Admin area to keep you guys in the loop - we'll let the community know tomorrow :)
Cool, I like this idea and I personally think a bit more TDM in the mix will be good as a lot of our matches are/will be TDM...
At the moment the mapcycle will be only TDM but that is only because that is the only experience I have of playing this way. If we decide this is for us (and I hope we do) then we can put our collective heads together and work other games types around it.
Sounds good, but it's a real hard habit to break.....running away when shot at.
Can you enforce it? Am I stupid? can you change the max run speed cvar like on CS?
Sounds good, I find CoD4 very hectic nowadays or am I just getting old.
I read the "surprise.." thread first and thought we were getting a puppy.
:(

I believe you can enforce it but I need to do some homework on it as it may be that the cvars turn off running all together and you dont want to run away from Helos very slooooowly :)
Dammit! What happened to the ethics of playing a game? Since forever I've crept around in CS or any other goddam game like you would if you were a soldier. It has always irritated the hell out of me to have guys strafing backwards and forwards and leaping like ninja twits twisting and turning and firing in one fluid motion! FGS! (For God's Sake)
The same goes for racing too. Keep it Real!
What I'm trying to say here is we really shouldn't have to employ scripts and cvars (wth is a cvar anyway?) We are Dead Men Walking.
Excuse me, I'm very sloshed but sincere. :) *hic*

I kinda agree, but if someone is shooting in my ass the the first thing I do is run off spraying in all directions. It's a natural reaction. Now imagine our les tolerant colleagues being on the receiving end of my random panic running flail attack/defence. Where would you draw the line?
be fair. if you were under fire in the open in RL you would run your arse off for cover.
We could use the PAM mod to enforce limited perks.
Go on, tell me we are going off ranked servers.....we can set it up nicely then.
Lets give it a swing to see how popular it is. If people hate it then we haven't wasted our time. If they love it then we can look at mods to sort things out in a way that reduces the admin load.
We can always add a rule that allows running when under fire but how do we admin that? When does running become too much running?
OK been thinking about an announcement to the masses and how we word it. How about some form of the following:
QuoteDear dMw Community,
For years the dMw ethos has been centred around teamwork and objectives. Although CoD4 does offer these, it has become evident that the pace of the game makes it very difficult to achieve, and even seasoned dMw members (ourselves included) find it almost impossible to sustain the approprite style of gameplay.
The Admins have come up with a plan to slow the game down leading to a better tactical experience, improved teamwork and more enjoyable gaming.
Consequently, we are proud to announce that on Sunday 15th February 2009 we will launch a CoD4 "Crouch Only" server.
Hang on, what is a "Crouch Only" server? Well, it means that when you move you have to be either crouched or prone. You are NOT allowed to walk or run. The initial set of server rules will be:
- No running unless under air attack (helos and aircraft) or a grenade lands near you.
- You MUST crouch or go prone to move.
- Standing is allowed (to see or fire over things) but you musn't stand and move (ie no walking with sights up to eyes)
- No Martyr
- No Last Stand
- No Rockets/Bazookas
- No Grenade Launchers
- No spawn kills - if someone spawns in front of you try to give each other a chance (difficult this one as it will happen but try to play the game)
Initially, the server will be password protected (same PW as the Private server) and all of these rules will require your co-operation but if the idea is successful then we would look to using PAM mod to help enforce the rules.
The server will appear on 77.108.129.47:28962 on Sunday - you may see it before that but we will be testing - and it will be running TDM (Team Deathmatch) as that mode seems to fit best - as we gain experience we will add in other modes if needed.
Finally, we should point out that this isn't our original idea but was seen on another clan's CoD5 server and, when tried, was found to be thoroughly enjoyable. We hope you like it and that it brings back those players who felt that CoD4 was too "run and gun" for our style.
See you on Sunday guys
The Admins
Looks good to me....I do worry about the admin, running is a habit, maybe disable running and up the walk speed?
Dunno, I'm walking here.

Lets see how it goes, I found it really easy to adapt when I joined the 3PIR server, it sort of came naturally because running makes noise and I like to creep around (ooh did I say that out loud)

Absolutely, let's have a try.
As with all of my thoughts, this one has evolved over the last hour. What may be best is to limit the sprint ability to a 5 second burst with a 1 minute cool down. I'm thinking running between cover spots is going to be annoying on your knees.
Add to that a restriction that you can only raise your sights when stationary and 'bob's your mothers aunty'.
I like the idea and think it could work well
Quote from: Armitage;263587be fair. if you were under fire in the open in RL you would run your arse off for cover.

One thought i had was that if you 'had' to run for cover, maybe having a rule where you can only run 'back' for cover (i.e. not forward) and you must not shoot whilst doing this.
I have no real idea how CoD4 plays out but if Doorman is suggesting it's actually a role play game :norty: then sprinting for cover seems fair. Seriously I do understand what Doorman says about making it more immersive. I think you would spend most of your time on your belly. But then when you reach that bit of open ground you'd jump up and run like bugger for the next bit of cover. I can see some forced disabling of the ability to run could be met with understandable opposition. If there is a difference between run and sprint and you can disable run but leave some ability to sprint intact I think you have a winner. And if sprint was on a cooldown (sorry my WOW obsession kicking in again) then it would be used more tactically as it was a limited resource.
Just my humble and ill informed opinion.
I've just read the thread on the outside. The biggest problem we'd have is one of people not understanding the 'concept'. Deep down they will always be seeing themselves as fraggers in strait jackets. Anyone here remember the howls of anguish when bunny hopping was disabled in CS? I still see the ludicrous sight of CTs boinging off down the street in Dust. :roflmao:
Question: Is the 'strafe-shoot-strafe-shoot thing allowed on this CoD5 server? One of my pet hates. :taz:

Did I mention 'role playing'? Not in the way that role playing is generally accepted. I suppose we all 'role play' don't we? Whatever the game. I play the part of a racing driver, soldier, or whatever.
Is running for cover being forbidden? It seems to be eminently sensible not to saunter across open ground. These and other questions will no doubt be answered in the fullness of time.
The C0D5 server doesn't allow running for cover, they expect you to use smoke to cross open ground.
As Ron says I think we'll have to see how it pans out and adapt as needed.
Cool, as I say I have no clue about CoD4.... I just don't want to be left out
I also suppose I ought to actually earn that damn green CoD4 badge that sits there haunting me "You fraud....you fraud" I'll try to get on the new server and go creepy with the rest of you.
Just been on the cod5 server BB mention, It works really well, there is no urge to stand and walk/run at all, although they could do with coms (i suspect they use TS) but even without coms, they seem to work as a team
I think it wont it would be too hard to admin either, you can easily spot a 'runner'
Quote from: Snokio;263724I think it wont it would be too hard to admin either, you can easily spot a 'runner'
"Logans Run", so we will be the sandmen.
Yeah, I read the outside thread and it annoyed me, so many naysayers, it's a new server for gods sake, they are reacting as if we're changing the whole setup.
It understandable. I'm sure most of the CoD4 players are more than happy to play their game. We're trying to step in and make it more dMw like, which is sensible and will be better for the community. But if someone thinks 'the game isn't broke' then 'why fix it' is an understandable sentiment
Looking forward to giving this a go. Another idea just to be annoying would be limit the server to 8 players max. 4 on 4 is great. 5 at a push.
