A regular 5v5 CS tournament is always fun as well.

I think L4D could be done as a tourney, however it will take a lot of time even with a cup style tournament. The question is how much time we are willing to spend on it? Maybe it is better to just leave it for this LAN (tournament wise) and have it on the next when we have tried out maybe a ladder and or tournament until then?

CoD4 tournament is easy and quick to get going I think.
I remember at LAN V when we played BF Vietnam with two 15-20 player teams while singing "WAR! GOOD GOD Y'ALL! What is it good for!". Maybe trying out a large custom map for CoD4 and try that again. ;)

Don't forget the racing tournament. Doorman?

COD is always better with small numbers on each side.

Yes I know. I don't mean for a tournament. I mean for singing. :D

No sorry mate. My wife is going away that entire weekend and I have to stay home with our son. However, I am still willing to help out as much as I can before the LAN.

ok.

We've also toyed with this idea from Arm.

I know it's not the dMw-way but it may be a fun distraction.

Quote from: Armitage;258797Had an idea for a small tournament for the next LAN.

COD4 for free for all. Each table line plays a 15 minute free for all match (no air strikes or choppers) to find the best 6 Fraggers and they meet in the final. To Crown the LANs No1 Fragger. LANs equivalent to the Olympics 100m

im liking the scirmish idea for COD

also degal and cs are always not to much trouble - apart from raising my heart rate!

anouncments and draws over steak night again?

as a side note - registration for competitons, i want to make this self service - IE have lots of scraps of paper and a bucket for each comp - people scribble there name on a bit of paper and drop it in the bucket for each comp they want in on - saves me walking round the whole room asking everyone and making mistakes (sorry again pen)

Good idea but why don't we print the attendee's names out for each tourney and then give it to them to drop in themselves. might be a bit more legible.

God bless Sheepy but it was a bit chaotic last time. I couldn't read half the names he had written and in my defence neither could he :lmfao:

I was thinking of appending something on to the name cards - you know when someone does an advert in the newsagents and types their phone number on little tear off strips for people to remove? We could to that with the namecards. We'll add their name 4 or 5 times and they can tear them off and drop them in the relevant comp boxes.

So we need to come up with a definitive list and also a running order for the w/e.

I can't remember - did we run anything on the Friday ? I'm thinking not but can't recall.  we did try something on the Sunday but am not sure whether it's a go-er, people tend to up and leave.

Let's work on the premise that the comps run from 11am on the Saturday, we need a running order for throughout the day / evening.

Is anyone happy to come up with a draft schedule? :norty:

You can always use a previous schedule and change the games to suit :)

L4D.
Round-robin tournament.

Teams of 4, well doh!!
Only one map, to be decided, probably a finale one.
Each team plays each side.
Team with most points wins.

Trouble is if there is a Tank or Witch spawn for the first team then the second team knows that these events are going to occur and roughly when. So we need to either randomly generate these events and/or prevent the Director from generating them.

I did think of using the scores from the round-robin to decide who plays in the final but that might make it a bit to long? :g:

Thoughts?

OK I've found out that you can disable the Tank/Witch spawns, director_no_bosses cvar.
But the Tank is a part of the final maps scenarios, so maybe pick an alternate map for the competition?

Im reserving judgement on L4D till i actually have a proper game of it (been working all hours since downloading it)

bearing in mind that Degal + CS + driving will take you from 11am - aprox 330-4ish

we then usually have the cod4 or summin as well, thourneys need to stop at 630 ish due to needing to eat.

are we going to drop cod4? I think this would b a shame - how long would the scurmish idea take???

how long would the L4D tourney take??

OK let's put this into some semblance of order:

Say we have 40 ppl playing.

Friday
Freeplay

Saturday
11.00am CS:S Tourney 5 vs 5 random draw - straight knockout. 8 teams > 4 Teams > 2 Teams > winner

Lunch

2.30pm   L4D Comp 4vs4 We haven't got enough time for a round robin L4d so it'll have to be one map played once as Infected and once as survivors. Tally points.  Straight knockout.

4.00pm Deagle. We can run the concurrently with L4D and jiggle the teams as needed to compensate for ppl playing.

5.00pm COD 15min FFA + 15min best 6 fraggers

5.30pm COD4 1/2 room vs 1/2 room

Sat Night - Freeplay

Sunday
Freeplay

*We normally have a LFS race which slots around the other games and don't normally set a time for this.

Thoughts?

If we make the L4D map one of the indoor mid-campaign ones then it shouldn't take too long for each match to finish, say the penultimate No Mercy one?
If the Infected get it right it could be over in seconds :roflmao:.

Yes I think we could squeeze it in as a straight knock-out.

Arm's (rightly) pointed out that mass CoD is not playable so we need to make it smaller. He's suggesting 5v5 but I'm not sure we'll have time. What about 8-10 per side then we can have 4 teams >2teams>winner?
Title: Tourneys
Post by: Penfold on February 27, 2009, 12:31:01 PM
Ok then.

1. Sn00ks - are you willing to take ownership of the L4D competition? (Oldie will also be around to help I'm sure :) )
2. Arm + Lib - are you willing to take ownership of the CoD4 competition?
3. Whitey (+ PEN) - are you willing to take ownership of the CS:S 5 vs 5 competition?
4. Sheepy - are you willing to take ownership of the CS:S Deagle competition (Mats + whitey can help on maps and I can sort servers).
4. LFS will be organised directly by Ron as usual (I presume?)

We can organise the teams and the stages but I need someone with the server know-how to set the servers up / decide on maps / format etc?

Sn00ks, if you're happy to do this and want to do a round robin we'll need to estimate the amount of time it takes (perhaps a dry run one night?). I'm happy to do whatever will be most fun we just can't afford to run out of time.

Please can you let me know if you're happy to do these.... :)

Thanks

OK Pen I'm game to give it a go, I'll probably have to rely on Oldie's help a bit.

I think a test run tourney would be a laugh and give us a good idea of whether it would work or not. I'll see what I can organise.

Thanks Sheepy, I forgot about this one.

I know the map your talking about I just can't remember the name but it should do the job nicely.  I'd like to go with de_westcoast for the 5v5 as it's a great map for that number of players.  Now that we have fast DL on the LAN server, having a custom map shouldn't be a problem.
