Title: Empire: Total war
Post by: Snokio on March 04, 2009, 12:41:32 PM
Anyone got this? I know it has been recently released, just about to purchase it from amazon (via affiliate link)

Looks like there are 2 versions:

Empire: Total War
and
Empire: Total War: special Forces Edition

Can't believe how much Steam are asking for it, £39.99 and £49.99 , Amazon for £23.96 and £32.00 (+ shipping), and you can sell it on afterwards!

I agree, buying this from Steam where you don't get a box, a disk or a manual and paying lots more seems insane. And for a game like this a manual you can refer to in-game is no bad thing.

Oh and by the way it's the greatest PC game ever made. You may not agree with that comment but you'd just be wrong.

got the game today, however, despite their being 2 DVD's, it installs the entire game via steam, 30 minutes later and still on 0%, NOT impressed at all! :ranting2:

Update: well after getting to 19% after 4 hours of it downloading it via steam, it restarted again at 0%, so looked at the CD directory desperately trying to find another Install file...nothing, looked on the forum and seen quite a few issues with the updating / downloading of the game, but one gave me a link on how to install from the DVD :yahoo:

And here's how:

Hopefully you've managed to get it working, what are your thoughts?

The consensus seems to be that the game was rushed towards the end for a quick release; there's a lot of bugs, some relatively minor like most games, but a lot of people are unable to play at all.

Luckily I've not had too much trouble, though performance isn't that great even on low when I should be able to run it on high at least. Still, a good game that could be great if/when it gets fixed.  :)

It did seem like a bit of a rush job to me in that there are many bugs, for me it froze, Some of the units are un responsive (stuck around buildings) and when i defended a fort where the 'exits' where destroyed in a previous battle () they would not take any commands or fire on enemy solders, which kinda makes you think if they tested it at all! (there was an update via steam last night though)

However, looking past that, they have taken it another step with the ship battles (water in directx10 looks great :thumb:), easy to use battle maps and commands, and quite a bit to explore, so not disappointed at all with the game play.

Install = Rubbish (thanks to steam)
Finished product = Rubbish (rush job)
Game = great (when working)

I'll have a look at it's multiplayer capabilities over the weekend if i get a chance, however, I think it may be quite limiting though
