Title: Home Backup Solutions using S3 or similar
Post by: Jamoe on March 29, 2009, 03:54:41 PM
After reading Bobs thread on his home server I wondered whether anyone had used services like Amazons S3 (Simple Storage Service).

http://aws.amazon.com/s3/

I'm sure there are people here that could make use of this. The older I get the more paranoid I am about losing all the photos and videos I've got.

I have not used it, but I have for some time been thinking about getting some kind of off-site backup solution as well. As it is now I'm fully covered with redundant backup of all I need, but that still won't do all my digital pictures any good if my place should burn down to the ground...

The S3 from Amazon is actually available - at least from newer models (don't think my version is still for sale even, so you won't have to worry about that) - through the HP MediaSmart: http://www.wegotserved.co.uk/2009/01/07/how-to-back-up-your-files-online-with-the-hp-mediasmart-server-and-amazon-s3/

And there are also other solutions being made which I would guess will work with all versions of the MediaSmart: http://www.wegotserved.co.uk/2009/01/05/be-a-beta-tester-for-tranquil-pc/

All in all it would be a very good combination :)

Very interesting.

I'd like to come up with an online back up for our files which come in at about 150gb.

Currently I use Foldershare which replicates the information to 3 different places but its biggest problem is that if you delete the file from one location is gets deleted everywhere else too.

So I also keep an external hard disk with a copy of the files every month.

TBH it's all a bit messy and it'd be nice to find a decent solution.
