Title: Total commander and multi-volume RAR-files
Post by: delanvital on April 02, 2009, 01:53:16 PM
Since v7 has arrived there has been some problems with unpacking multi-volume rar-files. So far, the best solution has been to installed the free add-on fhRAR (http://en.totalcmd.pl/download/wcx/arc/fhRAR). Handles RAR perfectly, also passworded files. Just download, then hit enter on the zip from within TC (i.e. open the archive) and it will detect it's a zip with an app and you can install by hitting enter twice. Restart TC and voila - no need to buy or use the clumsy WinRAR etc.

I had the same issues as was posted on the official forum for TC, and explained and remedied by Ghisler himself - when RAR files were on multiple archives, it would only unpack the files present in the first (.rar) file and not the (.xx) files. This is due, according to Ghisler, that the format was updated and updating TCs built-in RAR-support would be too complex and was thus not done. At present the official approach is to link to a WinRAR installation.

Note - this can also be fixed by adding the freeware unrar.dll to TC, but this is more complicated.
