Title: 8 gig of memory
Post by: sulky_uk on April 09, 2009, 10:11:40 AM
i was pondering what with the cheap prices of memory at the moment would it be worthwhile doing the jump from 4 to 8?

i have vista 64 and i know that when using 32 bit programs it will only adress up to 2 gig per program, but as i want vista to run quicker is it worth it just to get rid of the page file?

or have for when all those true 64bit games come out..........:g:

thoughts?

well with 8 gig you should be able to eliminate the pagefile, which would give you a performance boost in certain memory extensive games..

On the 32bit app in 64bit os, im currently working on a tool with some m8's that utilizes a old memory addressing command which enables 32bit programs to utilize memory about the 2gig std cap..

i run it on some programs in a 64bit win7 on my i7 platform with 9 gig mem

Depends what you're doing with it. If you're loading large samples in video editing, photo editing, music editing etc then it's worth having as much ram as you can afford.
If it's games I'm not sure how much difference the ram makes. My brother has 6GB for music editing. Our systems are similar except for that and our processors, mine quad and his is dual at the same clock. The processor seems to make more difference than the ram.

I have 8GB in a 64bit Vista machine, but I have to say I noticed no performance increase going from 4GB to 8GB.  The reason I did it was I needed more RAM for virtual machines... tbh most of the time without the VMs, the system uses less than 4GB.

And it still wants a pagefile.  Lots of stuff barfs if you don't have a pagefile.

More cores is the way forward, but more cores ain't as cheap as more RAM.

Thinking about it I'd save your money. When you upgrade to DDR3 (whenever that is) you have tripple channel and then you can buy a pack of 6gb ram for about £70. The 8GB of ram you would be buying now would become redundant with your next motherboard upgrade.
If you save up then you can get a nice DDR3 Mobo, Ram, CPU for about £500 now, and falling fast (mobos are still £150+) in 6 months time or so it might be worth doing.
