Title: Football Thread in 'Seriously'
Post by: Benny on April 09, 2009, 10:35:30 AM
Did consider moving it, I know it's bantery, but it's a reasonable question and it will always stir up banter. My take is that it's not an important debate, but a serious question so some side tracks are acceptable.

Let's not get all policey about it.....$0.02

if nothing else it's certainly stirred up some REAL parochial thinking by some people :eyebrow:

I agree. the tenor of the original post was light and following posts have remained thus.

Move it. We have given the mods strict instructions to keep that section on topic so we shouldn't introduce double standards.

Well I have to say that Rizzy's eye thread has taken a turn for the worse.

If we're going to have a strict policy then we all need to follow it.

I've just deleted a post by Luminance in the fossil thread which was flippant but we're all guilty in the Eye thread.

I think we need some clear-cut rules here as I'm painfully aware that we risk introducing double standards. Either we tolerate it or we don't. I'm happy with either but we need a consensus and it needs to be strictly adhered to.

I've soft deleted the posts I think should go (according to our current guidelines) and yes, there's a post from me, from OB and from Benny amongst others.

I know it's hard to bite back that witty retort and yes they're funny, but the last SOP we've had from OB was zero tolerance.

I know this ain't popular but I'm working to our current guidelines. They may well need adjusting in which case let's have the conversation :). In the interim, I'm enforcing OB's zero tolerance and shall instruct the Seriously Though Moderators to do the same.

I think one comment doesn't hurt and it's got to be taken in with the mood of the thread.

If I was posting about rapists and murderers and you posted up something crap then fair enough. If it's a light hearted serious thread then a *few* comments don't hurt.

Let's not get all draconi/dracul/drast/ serious about it.

In your country I believe, how you say, your panties are in the bunch?

Sorry but you're wrong mate. You're back-tracking on what was agreed above.

We tried the approach of relating posts to the tenor of the original point and, as with the football thread above, were (rightly) told that it's unacceptable (and you had to move it to banter).

That's exactly my point. There has to be a common policy across all posts in the forum or it reeks of double standards. Either we accept flippant/off -topic posts or we don't.

I really don't mind which way we go on this and it'd make life easier if we were lax on it - but it's unfair on us, the poster and the moderators of that forum if there's no clear guidance on what is or isn't acceptable.

Off-topic or flippant replies will be deleted.

Costacurta, mon ami.

As you know, I'll go the way of the consensus. You want to go ahead and delete my posts I won't be offended. I know what was said above but the serious content of a post is all relative.

Do what you feel is best forum troll and I'll be right behind you supporting you all the way.

I think most moderators would take a practical approach to one comment in a thread.  Where we need to step in is where the thread might become derailed or where the new posts are tending to be off-topic or flippant or where it moves beyond one comment.  I'd personally overlook one comment, but when they start adding up and becoming the norm then I would step in.  So in this respect I think Oldbloke's comments are correct.

We need to remember that the "Seriously thoough.." section was created precisely because we were having problems with off-topic derailments and flippancy or one-smily responses.  In that section there should be 'just the facts'.

I don't think applying those criteria to one 'serious' section is getting too serious about anything.  "No bull. No banter" is the header for the forum section.  Let's keep it that way.

Ayeaye,
