Title: Fury Warrior - Titan's Grip question
Post by: Carr0t on April 22, 2009, 12:06:05 PM
Not from me, I don't have a high level warrior. However, pre 3.1 but post 3.0 we had a Fury Warrior in guild who had Titan's Grip. Even when undergeared compared to our locks and mages he was doing about the same or a bit more dps, and once he got up to a similar gear level he was on about 3k dps on a lot of boss fights compared to their 2.7k or so, significantly more when we had a friend's 25man geared enhancement Shammy come in to fill an empty raid spot (We're a very uneven group at the mo. We only have 10 80s and the Warrior is our only melee dps. We don't actually have any raiding Drenai for the 1% hit or any classes granting replenishment yet. We're mostly a social guild, all know each other in real life, who also happen to want to see the raid content, so we don't want to go recruiting randoms).

3.1 nerfs Titan's Grip, dropping damage done when it is used by 10%. His argument is that it is now a pointless talent, that 2x good 2h weapons + Titan's Grip will only give roughly equivalent damage to 2x 1h weapons without the talent, so why bother taking it? He did agree it needed nerfing, but he thought only by 5% or so. As he's the only warrior in our guild we had no other really valid/viable opinions. I was wondering if anyone here had had experience of Titan's Grip pre and post 3.1 patch, and was able to give me an idea of whether he's right or not. I'm not going to go hassling him about it or anything, i'm just curious what other people playing the class think.

Fury scales really well with gear.  As for titan's grip it has totally lost its value so your warrior is right imo.  All our fury warriors have dropped it afaiaa.

So are they now using 2x 1h, or 1x 2h?

I know nooooothing about Warriors. I'm asking for my own interest now, rather than his info :)

Incorrect, Titan grip has not become usless as they say.

As with arms, fury DPS is gear dependant (though not as heavily due to the spec buff in fury stance so AP and strength arnt an issue) i personally use titan grip, my one to one DPS can be 5k/6k and my multi mob (boss with adds or trash etc) can be 7/9k at times, the main reason most fury warriors do suck ass as a titan grip is there hit rating, simply put.

Arms warrors need arounr 252 hit rating and they never miss.
Fury need around 720, now in TBC this was near enough immpossible to attain due to losing too much crit or AP, but with current WOTLK gear you can hit 500+ still have 5000+ AP as well as roughly 35/40% critical strike.

As long as the titan has suffiecient hit and expertise (26/28 for cap i believe) you really wont miss, and you would out DPS a fury warrior in exactly the same gear, due to him missing.

The hard cap is around 800 but from what i've read a fury warrior only needs around 200 hit to never miss specials and anything above that would be better spent on strength or crit (or Arp).  I've just been through the calculator to make sure I hadn't missed something and with the same gear and nothing else changed you would increase your dps by 200 going from 200 hit to 700 (the base was 3k dps so a lot less then your putting out).  I wouldn't gem for hit above 300 as strength and crit should give better dps above this.

If you have any information that shows that hit is better above this level then I'd love to see it as I'm still trying to improve my fury warrior when I'm not playing my DK (currently around 400 hit but not gem'd or using trinkets for it).

none of my gems are set for hit all for crit or strength from memory (plus some horrible stam strength gems due to no blue gems and needing to keep my meta working)

ya u wont miss specials but whites will and tht affects rage, rage is no longer an issue for me due to my hit rating 633 as my whites miss something like 2 every 20 allowing me to DPS constantly without w8ing for rage

I think this thread got necromancied/revived and might have got confused somewhat.  The thread ended back in April 2009, when to the best of my knowledge it was correct.  None of the top raiders seemed to be using TG and TC seemed to veer away from it also.  With subsequent buffs to TG & massive gear scaling that has occurred since i200 epics were introduced, it is now a talent that fury warriors use.

Like any class, things will change over time and a year in WoW is a very long time indeed.
