I turned off the PC at the LAN, put it in the boot, drove it home, plugged it in and it's completely dead. No mother board lights and no light when I shove in the router cable. I've tried another mains lead which I know works and it's still dead.
I'm working on the basis that if the power supply was live and the motherboard was dead that I would at least get a couple of LEDs on the mobo? So I have a dead power supply rather than a dead motherboard.
It's March...it's sucked the life out of it.
I may have an old one floating about if you are desperate?
Thanks but I quickly connected the power supply to my linux box and it fired up without a problem. I reconnected it to the windows machine making sure all the cables were pushed in properly and nothing.
So now I suspect it's a motherboard. And I need it up and running fast so it's going to be a trip to my local PC shop tomorrow. They are very nice, very helpful and very much more expensive that buying one online. Arse :angry:

try gently unscrewing the mobo screws about a quarter of a turn each, just in case when moving the case you bent it and put strain on the mobo... just an idea, also remove and refit memory, gfx card, pci cards and connectors just to say youve tried it all

Bad luck Smilo - do all the usual reseating etc and hopefully it'll work. I had an issue with this new PC of mine when I first built it when it didn't fire up at all. Did the remove battery for 15 mnis and BIOS jumper thing and it came back to life.

I did what you suggested and it fired up. Hurrah. But when I went and plugged it back in to the monitor it kept hanging and telling me I had no file system i.e. no HDD I assume. So I tried refitting the sata drive cables and after a few more goes it suddenly packed up again. So clearly something is a bit frazzled with the mobo.
Lifes short and I'd rather pay someone else to work out which bit is knackered so it's going to the shop tomorrow. At least I'm a bit clearer as to what the problem is. So thanks.
soz it it failed again, we used to have boxes on aircraft that would come into the bay fried, when you would take the case of and unscrew the mobo/cct board it would fire up and continue to do so after you re tightened sometimes it helps, some times it doesnt, i would look at the right bottom side of the mobo, (ie point nearest the front of case at the bottom) and the top left(nearest the psu) as these are the areas that get the most strain when cases are lifted up, especailly lightly designed cases such as specialised lan ones, also the block with the usb ports/sound/ firewire in it thats on the mobo, gently push it don onto the mobo as this can move with the case more than the mobo itself, had that happen to me after a ln, luckily all i lost was the nework, so i bought a pci network card!.

Cheers. At least I've (you've) worked out this the mobo. I'll try pulling it to bits and rebuilding it tomorrow. If it's still knackered I'll bung it in the shop and let them fix it.

As soon as it went into the shop it magically fixed itself. We couldn't find any problem at all and it's been fine ever since. Obviously my PC just wanted to go on a trip to the shops. Maybe it was bored?

Sounds like it was caused by moving it. Is your case a bit too flexible by any chance?
