Title: Phone for Granny
Post by: Blunt on May 20, 2009, 12:12:26 PM
My old mum needs a new mobile phone.
Like alot of OAP's her eyesight and dexterity isn't what it was, so she needs a phone with an easy to read screen (just for numbers and text, photo's not important) and easy to use buttons.
I've googled, but I'm still not sure which is best.
Any recommendations gratefully received:)

My grandma uses this (http://www.silverphone.co.uk/shop/p44/Binatone-SpeakEasy-Mobile-Phone/product_info.html?gclid=CJOqkNriypoCFaAU4wodzjUI3g) its under £60 unlock free to any network, worth a look :)

It's on pay as you go as she doesnt use it that often, and you can get free sim cards to all networks.

checked some eyesight forums and the iphone seems to be good for some people or phones which have a separate QWERTY keypad that slide outlike this one

:g: Can you really see Blunt's 'old mum' getting along with qwerty keyboards etc?
I've been on for yonks about why can't the likes of Nokia come up with...a phone? One with a number pad than you can hit with your finger tips and not a specially sharpened finger NAIL  One that doesn't have t3xt or a camera or access to the internet or games or any of the hundred and one things that the 2" square 'marvels' do. :taz:
I'll tell you why, they'd be dirt cheap to produce and sell but they'd make a huge dent in the existing iShite market. I watched an interview with the head honcho of Nokia UK and he was asked the same question. He waffled on about how 'liberating' the new batch of Nokias were. Never got an answer as to why they don't just make a phone for people that just want a bloody phone! Aaaagh!

@DA: That looks more like it. But £60?! I'm betting they're charging a heck of a premium for simplicity. £25 tops for something like that and they'd still make an obscene profit!

Mrs BB has poor close up vision. She uses one of these  (http://www.nokia.co.uk/A4222132)- the battery lasts for ever as well. You should be able to find them for next to nothing.

Seconded. My daughter took one of these with her when she went backpacking around Asia so I can also add that they're very rugged.

Dammit. In the week or so I've given a nokia 3310, 1100 and various others to phone recycling company..... All of which would have been perfect. Sorry

Agree about the 1100 simple and easy.

I highly recommend these (http://crave.cnet.co.uk/mobiles/0,39029453,49294416,00.htm)

they come in three flavours IIRC, this being the simplest

Yeah I've looked at those but they're about £90 which is silly money.

Really? They go for less here... and even cheaper in Sweden (Doro is Swedish me thinks?)

My mate mentioned this phone to me earlier, and I think my daughter had one, I'll see if it's any good...and I guessed by your photo that your mrs had bad eyesight:narnar:

What about the Motorola F3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rF07TZwur0&NR=1).

Robust,
Big character Alpha-numeric display,
designed for use in sunny conditions, so easily readable,
Spoken menu,
Simple,
Cheap.

It's just a phone, not a bloomin media centre.
