There is quite and interesting article just here (http://www.gamersdepot.com/hardware/video_cards/ati_vs_nvidia/dx9_desktop/001.htm) that sets out the difference between benchmark performance and real-world performance for the current crop of graphics cards and also how they will cope with the next-generation games that are just around the corner. An interesting read for anyone thinking about upgrading their graphics engine.......

I have an MSI GeForce FX 5900 128Mb. I would buy the ATi 9800 Pro if I was buying another card. It is faster, cooler and you have a chance of getting some support. Despite 3 emails to Tech Support at MSI I have received sod all response. Glad I spent so much on a Graphics Card :(
If there's anyone out there who can tell the difference by eyeball alone between 130fps and 160fps, then watch out - they're prolly not human.
Granted, a cr4p card is always a cr4p card, but 20% performance differences in high end cards aren't really that noticeable when playing games, only when comparing benchmarks. If you're spending (snigger) £350 on a gfx card, maybe it's important, in the real world benchmarks pretty much mean squat.
Just my opinion...

It's going to be a long while before I forget the 'Nvidia benchmarking Con'.
That will be dictating my next card choice more than who squeezes the most FPS out of their unit.
Nice article though TL.

Its not the 130 to 160 fps I'm worried about but the new stuff coming out. When playing multiplayer I am not interested in eye candy just a good gaming experience (hence PCS). However, if playing a single player game then, for me, part of the overall experience is the eye candy. In many of the newer games you can expect 30 to 60 fps with everything turned up. I would sooner have 60 fps than 30 :-)
By the way (snigger) it didn't cost £350 :narnar:
well i got a Gforce FX 5800 and my games play a tad smoover but all i been getting is problems. on CS (which plays fine) when smoke is put off it goes down to 30 FPS and i only get 69 FPS as a average
and most over games play crappy,
also i get a flipping sparkaly dots on some games   im really peeded off i spend all the money on this card and it runs crap all i been doing is getting problems  :(
1.6 CPU, 512ram <--- is that to slow for this card i know its not the best for it. you think its worth taking it back if i can?
The CPU and RAM are just fine for CS, as is the card. Have you tried different drivers for the card? I remember hearing something about a set or range of the drivers causing sparklies etc in games like CS. Try the newest driver and if that doesn;t work then drop back a couple - this may solve it.
