Reasons for 64bit OS and lots of memory

Ok, I knew there was a reason why I went for Vista 64bit and 8Gb of memory!

Initially I thought I was going to be doing some work in Adobe Premier Pro but as it happens that work hasn't materialised (yet).

However, I've started messing about with vmware again and of course for the virtual OS's to work well and properly they each need plenty of RAM.

I've set up a couple of OS's now - One Suse Linux and given it 2Gb RAM and I'm just about to play with a couple of others so I'll give them 1Gb or 2Gb also.

I'll do it so that I will still have 4Gb of system RAM even if I'm running both virtual machines at the same time!

Oh and a practical reason I'm testing and playing with right now is SMP folding on Linux.  Linux SMP folding is more advanced and faster that Windows folding right now, so I'm gonna start folding inside the Linux virtual machine soon.

I'll post back here results :)

So...the point?  If you are looking to upgrade or buy/build a new PC, then consider getting something with plenty of RAM (and 64bit OS of course) so that you can make use of virtual machines etc.

I'd be interested to hear how you get on with VM's. I find whenever I do a dual boot with linux I can never be bothered with the reboot between the two, but I quite like to have a play round in linux.
I've only got 4GB atm, but when I upgrade I think I'll have 6GB of ddr3.

VM's are easy, I've done it before and as long as you have an iso image or CD to hand with the install of Linux then you are as good as done.

I'm using VMWare but I guess you just as easily use MS Virtual Machine (I think it's called) or Virtual Box?  (again not sure of the name). :g:

Running VMWare here for exactly that reason T-Bag. Used to dual boot, but could never be bothered to boot back into Linux to work, I just used Putty to get to somewhere with a sensible OS to program on. Now i've got a Linux VM that boots quickly and easily, and 8GB RAm and 4 cores means I can run the VM compiling sometihng restricted to 2 cores and 3GB at the same time as playing WoW, as WoW only ever used 2 cores as well.
