Ok, I mentioned in another post about the usefulness of lots of memory (8Gb on my Vista PC).
I also mentioned that I was messing with VMware (http://www.vmware.com/products/ws/) and had installed Suse Linux (http://www.opensuse.org/en/) and then SMP Folding (http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ-SMP) on that Linux box.
Now I've installed Windows 7 (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/) in a VMware virtual machine and it went like a breeze.
I've also installed a nifty little program called Jing (http://www.jingproject.com/) which screen captures (images or video) and uploads to my free 2Gb space on screencast.com (http://screencast.com/).
I've captured the boot up of the Windows 7 installation inside VMware. Sorry it's not exactly exciting and it does take three minutes but the poingt of all this is to highlight useful programs like Jing for showing others how to do something (for instance).

So, if you have something to show others such as technical support or something interesting on your pc (like Penfolds weird Windows 7 glitch) then you can use Jing and screencast.com to show exactly what you mean :)

I use Sun VirtualBox (http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads) rather than VMWare. Does the same thing. The only thing I find annoying is that none of the virtual programs (and I've tried them all) can see the dongle on my parallel port - I wanted to try and get XP in a virtual environment so I could run my CAD program but it cannot see the dongle :(

I've downloaded VirtualBox too but yet to try it. I have the same problem with dongles...must be a solution but it escapes me right now :)

I'm guessing you would have tried installing the VMware-Tools in your guest OS?
Virtual PC and VirtualBox have something similar that must be installed in order for USB to work, not sure if that includes parallel ports. Can't recall what it was called. Guest-addons or something similar.

Yup, tried those, no joy :( Ah well.
I tried looking at Orca to see if I could get the installer to run on a 64bit platform but I just didn't know where to start with it, need to sit down and give it a lot of study I think. Shame coz it is a great CAD program and I like using it but the installer won't run in 64bit.
I have an old USB printer that won't install in Vista so I run XP in a VMWare machine and use it in that. As far as XP is concerned, it is running on the hardware as I can map individual USB ports to be available to the VM only. They won't show in the host OS, only the VM OS.
Not sure why dongles are messing around as they should work fine.
