QuoteTECHNICAL SUPPORT
How can I have a LAN party or similar event using Steam?

Any Steam game, when played on a LAN or otherwise, requires that each individual client be able to authenticate via the Internet.

At a LAN party, this means that Internet access must be available to every machine on which Steam games are being played.

If desireable, the network administrator of such an event can limit internet access to only the TCP/IP ports which Steam needs. These are:
UDP 1200
UDP 27000 to 27015 inclusive
TCP 27030 to 27039 inclusive

At large events, it will be necessary for each attendee to let their games fully update before attending to avoid taxing the shared internet connection with too much content delivery.

We will have to play 1.5 at the LANs then ... ;)

It will be important to establish a list of mirror servers for the download later today.  According to my usually inaccurate time zone estimates, CS1.6 Steam will become available from here (http://steampowered.com/index.php?area=getsteamnow) at 19:00hrs BST today Wednesday 10th September.  Someone correct me please if I am wrong!

If you find a mirror so that we can download the files quickly form other sources then please do post the links here.

Many thanks.

TL

PS  Please remember that MeatHook is still a CS1.5 installation.  We will let you know if, as and when it will change to CS1.6.

How will this effect matches? The chat function is one thing that needs to be turned off ...

Maybe we should cancel the scrims until we know what we are dealing with?

We keep it 1.5 until we know how everything is moving forward, like UKCSL4U etc.  Check the discussion in the Admin section Sadako.

So now anyone who wants to run a LAN event has to have some sort of broadband connection available into the bulding?

What a joke!

This is really going to screw me (and any other 56k/ISDN users) over good and proper :(

Unsurprisingly enough I am unable to connect to the Steam CSs to get the all important upgrade though.

And yes I know about the post concerning this in the members section.

Steam Dedicated Server Release Tonight; Steam Client Tomorrow
September 10, 2003, 12:07 pm · Greg Coomer

We've been making final changes to the Steam network throughout the night. Unfortunately, it's taken longer than we planned. However, the Steam dedicated server will be released this evening, and the Steam client release is now scheduled for tomorrow. We're working to get the release out as fast as we can -- sorry for the delay, and thanks for your patience.

OK! Has anyone managed to get this POC they call Steam to update? i have been trying for 2 days and because their servers are goosed I cannot even start Steam. if they think that this is how gaming will be in the future then it is just going to encourage people to hack the system to rip them off. We will shortly be having to pay to play games over Steam, if they cannot make it more resilient then people are not going to pay for a game that they cannot play.

As you can guess I am mightily hacked off!

PS My CS1.5 Server is running again until Steam gets its act together

I agree too, but in smaller writing.

I still can't get logged into steam. I can update fine. Then it confirms that yet again the network is apparently down. Or my network is screwed.

Or, steam is a steaming pile of pants, more like. I've about had it with this P.O.S.

Not being funny, TL, but there's only so far I can persevere before I wonder why they bothered.

I've installed 3 different versions of steam now - latest is the "full" 700mb install which was recommended after some update problems with the 400mb install. It seems to succesfully performs updates when I run it. It then doesn't log in. Repeatedly.

I've opened up the desired ports on my firewall and static mapped them to my machine - no change.
I've put the machine in the DMZ (against my better judgement) - no change.

Not that I should have had to do any of that, given that it should be _normal_ for software to expect to function through a firewall these days.

And I still get the same error. For the sake of completeness, I'll reinstall it tonight and see how it goes, but I am seriously running out of patience. I've got things to spend my time on (much though it pains me to say it) other than running the same program repeatedly in the slim hope it might work for once.  *shrug*

Fingers crossed this reinstall finally cracks it...

Re-registered using a new email, and all is well. It looks like my account got corrupted between beta and latest. Helpful.

Still, working now. Hurrah.

Exactly same as me, you should have said what was happening and i'd have told you.   It was only when i read somewhere that registering multiple account with the same wonid does something towards locking those accounts out.  Btw if Stryker reads this I had to use the e-mail he said he set up when crosswired were handing out the webspace to dMw regulars, so can you check that the @nsr.deadmen.co.uk is working correct ta.  Nothing seems to be being forwarded to me.

Well, the account was not failing to login according to the error message.

That is, if the account had disappeared, it wasn't telling me that the account didn't exist. Whereas if I typed the wrong password, it was very clear that there was a problem. So the account definitely existed in some form or other. Other, I suspect.

Thanks.

If you install reinstall to many times your account info containing your cd key is lost and steam wont work and you have to contact steam support, in that case you is lucky.
