I've spent two miserable days wrestling with routers. We had a succession of power cuts yesterday, those mini ones, and I;m thinking that they may have had something to do with my router biting the dust. (possible?)
I'm at the 'ah bollox!' stage where I'm up for a new one. Question is, which one? I've had a Netgear FR114P for many years. Nice solid metal case job. Replaced it with a Linksys RVD4000, lightweight plastic thing. I'm not convinced by wireless routers (flakey for gaming) So which one? I'm not too afraid of price within the range of king's ransom. Netgear WRG614 was in the frame till I found out it's wireless. Is it true you can wire up these things?
Jeez, I'm getting sick of this! THE FRUSTRATION! AAAAAGH!
Sorry no HistoriX server chaps.
For what it's worth - the power supply for the router could be the problem. I have had this twice with routers, the power went flaky, then psu died. I replaced it with a multi-voltage-thingie I had laying around so I could get somewhat the right voltage and they both worked fine after that. Perhaps worth finding some power adapter with the right voltage
Im using my trusted Linksys 54G which runs like a dream..
Yeah its wireless but it also has a built in 4 port switch so cable is possible :)
I've had my D-link DIR-655 for over a year now and it's been on 24/7 and I've had no problems whatsoever with this router. I'm sure you couldn't go wrong with a similar D-link.
It is wireless but also it's a wired router so you can choose to turn wireless off if you wish.
Netgear FTW. Look at one of the N range as they act as a wired / wireless router / modem all in one. Built in firewall which is always handy.
D-Link DIR655 here too. Excellent!
Built in 4 port gigabit switch as well.

A point to note is that despite alex playing on his PC and my two girls with their laptops on webcams and often downloading, gaming isn't adversely effected. Possibly due to the QOS technology?
Oh, and it has a USB port for printers and such
Ordered one D-Link DIR655. Thank you gentlemen. :)
One DIR655 arrived this evening. Excellent service from eBuyer :D
Problem: Three PCs hooked up, all are connected to the internet. I can see all PCs via My Network Places and vice versa. However, I don't see the other PCs apart from my one, in the LAN list. This is awkward because without knowing the IPs of my server machine I can't sort out the port forwarding. I've Googled but not found anything that seems to apply to me. Oh, I did the ipconfig/dnsflush number and no difference. This thing is wired by the way.
I have ascertained that the IP on the wayward machines are the same as they were on the Netgear router. They also refuse to be repaired. Jesus! Networking!
EDIT: EDIT: EDIT! Sorted. ipconfig...ipconfig/release...........ipconfig/renew Heh heh heh
