Title: rFactor server.
Post by: Doorman on June 14, 2009, 02:53:45 PM
Update: After a torrid week connection wise Virgin have decided to sent me a new modem. I've been suffering random disconnections from the internet that a brand new router, network card and hours of hair tearing have failed to resolve. Hopefully a new modem will be the answer. :g:

I've started the process for getting an HistoriX server running on one of the dMw servers. We can't get the ports opened until tomorrow but I hope to have it up and running before too long.

Said modem arrived this morning and it sits here winking and smiling as modems should. Very unlike the other surly git! And no, it makes no difference to my server. POS

Have you tried changing ports in .plr file, or maybe opening them on the router?

I know you probably did this but i had to ask :narnar:

I'm game for anything. Which ports do you suggest? Do you mean these lines?:

Query Port Start="34297" // range is 1025 - 65535
Port Start="34397" // range is 1025 - 65535

If you do, they're in Multiplayer.ini these days.

Yeah thats it :)

Well, you could try to go into your router config interface, and look for list where you define ports and applications, something like that, and create appropriate entry there... Sry for the unclear post, i'm in big hurry...

How odd, they're the same bloody ports I've been using since day one!
Sorry Dave but you've no idea how many times I've been told the ports. I mow recite them to myself to get me off to sleep!

EDIT: That was the last straw. I'm reinstalling Windows. We'll see if a 'start from scratch' approach helps.

Server started. If anyone has time to check that they can join etc then please let me know if there's any issues. Look for 'dMr Test Event' in your game browser.

This is just a test to make sure that the server is working as it should. No configuration has been applied as yet.

Well, I downloaded the track. Brianza an ISI version of Monza with some optional layouts attached. So maybe it was included in later releases of rFactor and so is on the server.

I've just done a few laps with XLR8.

A bit big and open for the Mini's. But at least the server is up. :thumb:

Aye, I got disconnected a number of times as well and sometimes had to try reconnecting several times before I could get back in. When I got disconnected again in the second lap of the race I decided to call it a night.

Had a few more problems with the server again today. There were about 12 people on, the race started and about 3/4 of the way through lap one, and all the other cars disappeared. Everyone experienced the same thing.

Re-starting the weekend didn't really fix things, until exit and re-join. The race restart with 4 or 5 people was ok, and the next race as well.

Cheers.

Hey folks, well I have a suggestion... just a lil one, and its called

Thermalito ... http://www.rfactorcentral.com/detail.cfm?ID=Thermalito :woot2:
Oh I found a pretty cool video of it in action too .. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9pxP8_o17M heheh

This track is crazy fun, and it looks good too :) And its decent with a sizable grid too. As for a car to go with the Escort.. hmm maybe the Abarth/Ferrari 250/Porsche 914?

One of those is bound to be similar performance wise. Though I can't remember exactly how they compare as I usually just race against the same type of car, but they can't be far off can they? :roflmao:

Isn't that a 'fictional' track? Surely there are enough 'real' tracks we can cut our teeth on. Looking at the vid, it seems to be composed of bits of other circuits, corkscrew of Leguna Seca, tunnel from Monaco etc. but good vid nevertheless :)
Title: rFactor server.
Post by: mattgirv on June 29, 2009, 03:34:55 PM
Yeah its kind of semi-fictional in a sense. There isn't actually a race course, but I'm pretty sure he based the layout around real roads around a dam that is there, in Thermalito.

Saw something he is working on that is a track based around the town centre of Liverpool... so it looks as if he basically is taking real life roads, and turning them into race tracks per say.

You are right there are ton of real tracks that can be used instead, wasn't sure whether that was what was being aimed for though. :D

As a starter for 10 (geddit) that looks fine.

I'm not overly enamoured with the ISI made tracks. (Brianza and Silverstone), and in some cars the Brands Hatch causes issue due to the track surface.
But that looks like a fine spread.

A new track for me Wanneroo :D something to get my teath into.

A candidate to replace one of the ISI tracks. It is hard untill you have learnt it. But with it being Laser scanned, the bumpy track surface really add's to the realism.

Now then what about cars? Are we going to limit choice, single make, model  etc or have a class rota?
Not much fun lapping in a Mini when some other git is in a 911. :taz:

I liked the way the cars were grouped on Doorz' server. It allowed the users to choose from a variety of cars while not compromising the quality of the racing; the cars were usually very well matched. I don't know how easy it is to set it up like that, though.
Title: rFactor server.
Post by: Deetz on June 30, 2009, 01:47:19 PM
I think running a number of cars, ie a selection from the GTC-76 class is a good idea. I like the competition between car's with there diferent strength's and weaknes. Yes there is some disparity in performance, but this is usually changes from track to track. Overall its not too bad, as long as reasonably balanced selection is allowed.

Often this can also be used to balance the drivers out a little, though there are always those who always go for the quickest car regardles.

Out of those currently available on the server, the 3.1 litre Capri is normally the quickest. I can usually lap 1-2 seconds quicker in the Capri than the Escort for example, but I would much (much much) rather be driving the Escort.

I would also like to see the car groups changed weekly, with all tracks being available all the time, preferably in rotation.

Often there is only one car that is disproportionalty quicker than everything else in the class. In the GT 65 class for example, the GT40 is hugely quicker than anything else. On those grounds the odd car should probably be ommited from each class.

Just my tuppence worth. :D

Bring on the racing. :boxing:
Title: rFactor server.
Post by: Seany on June 30, 2009, 03:45:00 PM
Yeah, most of the group cars see pretty well balanced.  I would love to do some racing in the likes of the JagMk2 and Ford Falcon, seemed ridiculous to try and race them when I started but they have really grown on me :D
Tracks look good.  I love Wanneroo, tis a great, shortish track that's easy to learn but with some real fun sections, like the big hill down to the last turn and that cambered long left hander where it looks like you might roll the bugger if you go off the other side, great stuff! :D
Title: rFactor server.
Post by: Lameduck on June 30, 2009, 07:22:33 PM
I must admit to liking the 'Jag' etc class, reminds me of Touring car racing at Oulton in the early 60's. Graham Hill in a 7 litre Ford Galaxie versus a load of Lotus Cortina's, Ford 105E Anglias and the Minis.

Galaxie was great in a straight line, but unfortunately had little braking after about 2 laps and floppy suspension. The minis swarmed around it like wasps in a jam jar and then ducked out of the way on the straight bits. Huge fun :D

Perhaps we should do an LFS org. and have a different combo every week, but come on -lets have your preferences and then I can decide to do it my way :narnar:

Just tried Wanneroo, fun curcuit, easy to learn but hard to get absolutely right.
