Title: Terminator Salvation
Post by: smilodon on June 15, 2009, 06:15:56 PM
Why do I only seem to post stuff about completely crap films? I'm clearly just a miserable sod who likes to moan about everything.

My hope was that Terminator : Salvation was going to be like Casino Royal or Batman Begins. A re-invention of the franchise and a vast improvement on the previous few films. Christian Bale is a great actor that usually stays away from crap. So the signs were good.

Then I discovered that the director was McG. Why he didn't want to stick with his real name Joseph Nichol I have no idea? That's what it is to be a tosser I suppose. His directorial work includes both Charlie's Angels movies, and a load of forgettable music videos. So things begin to look bad.

The writers are responsible for The Net (Sandra Bullock movie), Catwoman (Halle Berry Movie), Aeon Flux (Charlize Theron movie) and a load of US TV rubbish. So things now look really bad. Then I found out they wrote T3 which was utter shite and I really didn't want to go see it at all. But I was out voted (Her ladyship seems to get two votes to my one???).

Sadly Christian Bale couldn't make anything of this utter pile of crap. It's a truly miserable film. There is no plot just a lot of explosions and people fighting machines. I can't even bring myself to describe how grubby this film is. That this descends from the original Terminator masterpiece and the fantastic T2: Judgment Day is especially sad. T3 should have warned me that this franchise was going nowhere, but Christian Bale's involvement gave me hope it was going to be a return to form. No chance. Wait till this comes out on DVD and then go round a mates house to watch it so you don't have to waste any money at all.

Have to agree, some good explosions but its just doesn't go anywhere and no new material at all. Guess they just wanted to cash in and tarnish the image of the first 2 films .

2/5

I am beginning to see why Bale lost his temper on set, probably knowing where the film was going

Doesn't have anything going for it. Some of the graphics was alright I guess, but story is rotten, acting is below average, action sequences are unrealistic.

In a world controlled by robots you expect far more death and destruction, however they seem to go to great lengths not to kill anyone unless they're in a car which will provide a large fireball.

If a robot programmed to kill and destroy humans grabs the ankle of a human you have thought snapping it like a twig would be high up there on things to do to prevent running away. No, that apparently must be avoided at all costs. They treat the robots as really tough humans not machines that have pin point accuracy, and can crush bone at the blink of an eye.
In the original film there was a single machine and you were never safe, however with thousands of the things all around it's not especially dangerous.

It was a bit poo i'll admit, I just didn't take it seriously in the end. Better than a kick in the goolies though.... although that's not saying much as most things are.

On reflection I'd rate it along side Aliens v Predators. No matter how crap AvP was it still had Aliens fighting Predators and so you sort of had to see it.

T4 is rubbish but you also have to see it as it's got Terminators in it. Hence my comment about try to see it for free legally. Also as far as I am aware the TV series completely ignored the T3 story as Sarah Connor was very much alive in the TV show.

I think you're all being fairly harsh to be honest - I went in with low expectations and came away fairly happy.  Not worth a dime when compared to T1 and T2, but certainly better than the risible T3.  True, I won't be rushing to buy it on DVD, but at least it gives the foundation for greater things to (hopefully) come.  All the criticism of McG seems to be based on prejudice rather than the actual product put in front of you.

Things I didn't like - they don't use lasers yet unlike the flashbacks in previous films, but I guess that will come later.  The terminators clearly had actors inside them, whereas previous exoskeletons looked like proper robot skeletons.  Not sure if its possible to do open heart surgery in a field hospital in the middle of the desert.  The resistance seemed to be far too strongly armed, with helicopters and jets and military bases - surely Skynet destroyed these in the initial attacks?  I always thought the resistance would be more like rats picking away at a large enemy, scurrying in holes in the ground, rather than a bloody great army.

Other than that, it's an average 6/10.

I mentioned the director in my preamble to going to see the film. He has made mostly crap stuff.... well actually completely crap stuff. So my expectations were not high. But it starred Christian Bale so that was good.

I tend to judge a film not entirely on what was actually released but also on how it compared with what might have been released. Did the film makers have good source material and what did they do with it? Did the squander the opportunity? In this case, much like T3  they blew it. It could have been great and it turned out 'bleah'. Christian Bale could have done so much better than to simply redo his character out of the rubbish Dragon movie Reign of Fire. McG though was probably at the top of his very very limited game.

There's just no real story, nothing new or original. None of the elements in this film were as well done as stuff we had already seen in earlier films. The acting was dodgy, as was the special effects. I didn't have any empathy with the humans so I didn't care what happened to them. The Terminators were not cool anymore and the Arnie 'cameo' was stupid to the point of being funny.

So I'm not loving T4 because there could have been a great film in there somewhere. They had the chance to make an effort and do something that was quality with the franchise. They could have made a Casino Royale or a Batman Begins. I'm dusappointed that they didn't bother or just weren't good enough and we got this mess dumped on us instead.
