Title: Where can I download movies from?
Post by: Penfold on June 16, 2009, 10:55:07 AM
I'm looking for a site where I can LEGALLY download movies and / or tv shows?

I appreciate it will be subscription-based but I'm not 100% convinced that the sites I've found are 100% legitimate? I also can't find a resource that points to legal sites.

Is anyone a member of such a site?

Thanks

I use two over here - you can try and see if they will play from the UK

www.sf-anytime.com (http://www.sf-anytime.com)
www.cdon.com (http://www.cdon.com) (look for "film stream")

The gf also found a new site, a European one, when reading the news the other day. Will try and dig that up as well.

Much as it pains me admit it, Apple offers TV show and movie downloads as well..

Not quite what you are looking for (rent and buy), but shows Apple TV (+sky HD and Virgin), saw it on the gadget show:

Sky does a service where you can download movies on your computer when you're a member of their Moives package on TV. They also do an online only service where you pay to watch tv online, I guess there's probably an overlap where you don't need the TV package and get the movies. The quality of the stuff was good enough, and although it had DRM it was easy enough to play.

Thanks for the help guys, really useful.

There's so many sites out there and I'm sure that even if you pay that can't guarantee that it's not illegal.

Anything legal will be wrapped in DRM and usually use a bespoke player. So that's a relatively good sign that you are within the law.

That way they can put an expiry on the content you have downloaded so they know you aren't selling it on or sharing it, that's the way the BBC iPlayer works with downloaded stuff.
