So you have to download steam installer from one of their register only crappy file sites???
Anyway, I've run the installer and nothing!!!! seems their servers really are steam powered cos the update just aint happening!
:argue:
Check the other posts for the link to the bigger install file (400Mb +).
The small installer freezes due to the load on the deployment servers.
Try this one for dl
http://download.gamenews.ro:8080/FREEWARE/...teaminstall.exe (http://download.gamenews.ro:8080/FREEWARE/steaminstall.exe)
just tried logging in no luck is it still down?
My steaming pile has obviously cooled down and stopped steaming as it wont even load now
I have managed to download CS now. I had to restart Steam 4 times before all had been downloaded. Friends list works ... the only thing that doesn't work is that when I connect to a server (or create one) it freezes.
So far I am not all impressed with this. Steam should change name to Scream ...
I have an account...I say again..... I have an account.
After two days of poncing about I exist on the Steam database.
Of course I cannot actually connect to Steam or do anything with it, as the network seems to be for ever down.
But it's a start
When you try to join a server for the firsr time it will take an absolute age to do it's thing. Let it finish.
However, it may just be locked up
It's failing to connect at all and gives an error message. No firewall issues so I guess it's down
Wahoooooooooo its finished downloading :D
Wahoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo it works as long as i dont want to play a game of any sort. (http://www.emotipad.com/newemoticons/ChuckBall.gif)
Ahah, I see you are now in the same position as me.
TL.
as well as being the most unstable POS to grace the copper and electrons of the intarweb it also has spying technology (apparently)
Steam Spyware? (http://forums.inspiredgaming.com/viewthread.php?threadid=1810)
G-man I think you may have been caught up in round 2 of that de-bunked story. As far as I have read so far, there is no spyware in the software. But I still hate it :D
TL.
After careful consideration ....I'm not running it. Spyware or not, it's a complete disaster so far. I'm sticking to 1.5 and will buy CS:CZ.
If that allows me to play CS online great, and if not then I may well give up my CS altogether.
You can always rely on the greed of some company to bugger up the really good things in life.
Im also getting very close to giving up.
I can actually play but the buggy crap im getting is ruining a game i once loved.
Blokes with shields running around flapping their arms, cant type when dead unless i reconnect, sometimes cant move forward (that was only one server so...), takes a loooonnng time to load.....there are about 3,4 more things but ive had enuff so im off to bed.
Also just got an email from steam.....
QuoteDear Steam user,

What utter bollox i bought this in the generations pack ages ago, why dont they go fk themselves with a huge iron rod with a star shaped wooden splinter.
Thankyou very mcuh for nothing steam.
Well I'm downloading the cache files from freenet.de. So fat I'm runing at a respectable
50.6 kb/sec, so I should have it downloaded in a couple of hours.
Everything might work out OK with Steam, once the world and his dog have downloaded the files and the servers have got themselves sorted out.
Then again I've been worried for while now that there's so many people playing CS all over the world, and no one is making any real money out of it. Valve have sold a fair few copies of Half-Life I guess, but apart from that nothing much. I really couldn't believe that we would all be left alone to enjoy our CS while the big corporations went off and lost millions on their MMORPG's and whatever. Sooner or later some idiot will come along and try to lighten our wallets everytime we fancy a game of CS. And in doing so completely destroy the whole thing
Maybe that time is now and maybe it isn't. But sooner or later it'll all go to sh*t :(
That's a very, very angry man. It sounds to me like a case of uninstalling everything steam and using Regheal to clear out all the registry shite and starting again. I will put a full copy of Regheal on the leech.
Download complete and Cs updated. Steam is the only program that has actually been able to crash XP since I upgraded from ME. So well done to Valve for that.
However I have completed the upgrade and connected to my first 1.6 server. A quick bash on cbble and it wasn't bad.
Of course all the weapons have got the crappy retail names, my buy script (Rze helper) has vanished and I've no skins or sexy guns anymore.
On a more worrying note both dMw servers seem to be down so i hope it's the 1.6 upgrade Doggers is doing and not that Steam has buggered up my original CS 1.5 ?
just wait. in a month or so it'll be pay to play. why else would they need you to be on-line to play it?
Both servers are down because the server install is as slick as the client's
To give credit where credit is due, Oldie has been working on the server install of 1.6 since Friday night. You can just imagine the sheer fun and enjoyment he has managed to purloin since then. It's a nasty job and sommebody has to work their way through the 1.6 steaming piles. Thanks for doing it Oldie.
Give the servers some time to recover and they will be up again. You won;t have to wait long.
TL.
I am uploading the steaminstall_cs.exe (379 Mb) to the leech and it should be there in 60 minutes.
Yay dl complete only took nearly 3 hours !! o well
Good job oldie
Happy to hear the down servers are due to the update. Unhappy to hear it's being such a pain to sort them out :(
Spy's tell me that a special off-line version of Steam will issued soon, especially for LAN matches. The pressure being put on Valve by the big Gaming Leagues and their corporate sponsors appears to be considerable . So I imagine that will be addressed soon.
Making it mandatory to play on-line through Steam might be a precursor to charging for playing on-line but I don't think so. CS would die on it's feet if everyone (especially the millions of kids with little or no disposable income who play it) had to pay to connect to a CS server. I for one would drop CS instantly if I had to pay for using a game I had already bought and wanted to play on a server (dMw) that had mothing to do with Valve.
I hope it's just a new way for Valve to sell their products and keep them uptodate without having to deal with publishers or retailers. I'd be worried if I were a game retailer I guess.

Don't give us that! He loved every minute of it. As did we all, except we only had one computer to update, he's had loads! I say, lucky old OldBloke.
Well done and thanks.
I give up ... I have installed and reinstalled this Steam POS over 10 times now ... but it will never work.
Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

it seems to be up and down today sad....stick with it m8 ya started to sound like smilo :P
Well I found you on the friends thing. It does take a bleedin age to log on though. I've waited 5 minutes + for a connection.
It does seem to work (pained though I am to admit it)
I am about to join Sadako on this one.
I have reinstalled 8 times now and it will not work. Its newest reason is it is performing illegal operations. I have had to update my password twice as it said it was wrong, the rest of the time it either stops responding (yes i have left it to do its stuff for at least 15 mins) or it wont even start at all. The latest thing seems to be that as soon as i click on any icon in the taskbar it closes, which is weird. I am also getting the internet con. down box. After downloading all day yesterday i atleast got to the point of trying to join a server, even though it would crash or stop responding. When i started it up this afternoon it wont even load, so i tried the steaminstall_cs.exe which caused all the problems listed above. There are plenty more problems but these are all the ones i can remember at this moment.
How are you getting along TL :P
<_< It just wants to make you look stupid. (yeah yeah i know not hard)
As soon as i posted i tried it once more and it got to the server screen. First server i tried didnt work, verification failed, then it worked and i got on a server wahooooooooo. Wonder if i can do it twice in a row?
Be back to let you know :P
Ok it didnt work twice in a row, but once in 100 tries is a bargain. I am greatly encouraged. It has however managed to make my machine as fast as a 486, well almost. Spendid stuff.....

TL is getting along nowhere quickly. This morning's bad piece of news was that the website I was downloading the exe from wasa disconnected due to cut-off and I only had half the file. So trustingly, I reconnected this morning and started the download thinking that the phone lines would drop once it had done the last 200MB. The bad news for this afternoon is that having been out all day and just come back in I find that I am being asked for an FTP password by freenet.de and the download stopped at 268MB, leaving me still 100MB short of a full executable. To say I am miffed at the moment would be a massive understatement.
I am off to see if the partial download will pick up from the MH.
TL.
OK that's it - I give up. I will not for the foreseeable future be playing 1.6.
Having spent over 24 hours trying to get steam to work and failing, I then spent the best part of 24 hours trying and failing to download the exe file from freenet.de (having given me over 200MB of the 380MB file it now wants a bleedin password which I do nto have).
So what have I got for the price of 96 hours online? Fook all, that's what - I am bloody steaming here (no pun intended).
Who volunteers to send it to me on a CD? I bloody refuse to download the exe file now, I have had it with steam.........
:frusty:  :argue:  :yell:
TL.
I dled it from them i think i got a crap version. Because i instal it try to connect get a error closes it self. Reopen it it freezes i get pissed off. Reset computer try the shortcut again and guess what its gotten rid of the exe file disapeared not even in the bin bloody thing grrrr :(. TL if i get this version to work ill send u a cd if ya want. ;)

Doesnt seem any point aiming though when you play. If i aimed i missed if i sprayed i got a head shot. :D Been called every name for a cheat in the last hour.
I found the same thing last night..
Anyone fancy a game of 1942? :D
How are the servers going Oldie? ;)
/oldie throws big rock at Donks (http://www.emotipad.com/newemoticons/ChuckBall.gif)
Ok no need to answer
Still no luck for me. I am up to 30+ installations now on two different machines. I have even tried going with the original steam install file, but no luck. I think I will never get this to work.
The strange thing is that I got the beta version to work smoothly ...
That's it then I guess ... have to find some other game I can play.
ok, time to convert blackadder into an elite force II and SoF II server :)

Mine is now running smoothly. (famous last words)
Nothing conceivable that i did. It just decided to start working, havnt restarted since though
Ok, I have been on Baldirc. Steam seems rather unstable. I must restart the comp between each load of steam.
The trick that did it and made it "work" was this:
1. Install steam small version (the 500kB one) 2. Do not install cs or anything else. Just update steam. 3. Install steam Large version (379 MB) into a new folder (e.g. steam2) 4. Copy SteamApps from Steam2 to steam 5. Uninstall steam2 6. Launch steam
Sounds bizarre but it actually worked ...
Well extreme circumstances call for extreme measures ...
Btw did i tell you I have installed/repaired steam more than 50 times today ...
WOOT!!!!![/SIZE]
Guess who's server is back on line? :D
