I also had this problem but it sorted itself by going to the lost password bit answer the question and when it says enter a new passy enter the same one.

Seemed to sort it for me. Had no problem since.

Download the version with the steam cache and try with that. I had to completely delete the old version of steam 1st and have finally got it to work.

You can get that version of steam from blackadder.

Up as in the Steam servers are online.

You can check the system Here (http://www.steampowered.com/status.html)

Bear in mind that a zillion other people are checking this page too so it's a bit slow to load sometimes. As far as I am aware from the Steam forums and CS Nation the Steam Network is up and running. It crashed at the end of last week but since most people have been downloading the 380+mb cache file the servers have all been back on line.

As more and more people upgrade to 1.6 and more and more servers do likewise, the load on Steam will drop a lot and signing in and authenticating will get quicker. So they say.

Dodgy Zone Alarm settings and the built in XP firewall cause a lot of problems. This will trip up signing up with Steam, logging on with Steam and connecting to a game

You may well have a Steam account but Steam can't get through your firewall to authenticate you so your client says that either Steam or your internet connection is down. You also have to allow Half-Life to have access through the firewall (That's the new half-life exe file in the steam folder and not the old one in the sierra folder).

Also installs that fell over part way through or appeared to hang and were terminated by the user will also leave Steam in a mess.

Finally only register ONCE. If you scrap Steam and start again with a new e-mail there is every chance that Steam will already have your HL CD-key allocated to the original e-mail you submitted. It will not stop you setting up a new account but will stop you logging on to a game as it thinks (rightly) that another e-mail has used your key and you are an imposter.

So I took the plunge and what a load of tosh - I can't even connect to the steam network (after many, many, many tries), I ain't sure if I've created an account or not as it would never confirm if I had been successful in trying to set one up, and I definitely have no background apps such as virus, trojan, or firewalls to bork it up !

Help (please   :( )

I still can't connect. The XP Pro firewall is turned off, ZA has all ports and all protocols open for Steam and still connects to bugger all.

It's a steaming pile off and I'm getting fed up fast.

The first time you log on you have to wait a fair while (5 - 10 minutes) before you get authenticated. Bin the process early and you are in all sorts of problems. I think there's some additional updating going on plus your registration  request gets queued behind other new users. After that it seems to take about 60 seconds to load Steam and about 2 minutes to log in. CS games load in about 60 seconds (so faster than WON!!!).

I'm not sure what inbound connections Steam needs to make to your machine. Theoretically none as you are client with no services being offered. However as Steam is effectively a distributed network you may have to allow some incoming connections. Windows XP's firewall (such as it is) will block inbound connections, so maybe turning it off will help.

Clearly Steam works in principal as I'm having zero problems with it. So either there is something specific with your PC-set-up that's causing the problem, you were impatient with the LONG registration process and dumped it too soon or Steams servers have bugs in them that screw up random registrations. Mine worked yours didn't :(

If you know how to check firewall logs you might want to see what Zone Alarm is doing.

I think it is more a case of steam being under soooo much pressure that it has liquified totally and is danger of turning into a solid.

Wait, is the best advice and hope that Valve sort their sh*t out.

Of course you can get the bug fixes real quick through Steam  :)  err unless you can't connect to Steam due to bugs in which case you're err shagged  :(

I'm gonna love to see how Steam copes with the HL2 release. Pay you money, take your game home, load it up and watch Steam stop you playing it

Sigh.... I would have had no problem with the reg process taking a while - unfortunately it didn't and binned me out after about a minute of trying to create my account with an error message.

So I figure I'll try and create the account again using same details - but then it tells me the email is already being used!  I'm loath to use another email as I have little confidence in the set-up.

So now when I try to connect I either get - "Steam isn't responsive" or "This account doesn't exist" when it clearly does.   :learn:

Do you then envisage a time when it will not be busy? Of course! When 50% of the people now finding it busy  decide to end it all! Then the ones who toughed it out will be able to connect.

Logging on is NOT a server load issue IMHO. Steam Servers have been nowhere near  full capacity since Sunday night when the Steam cache files were released. (Unless Steams server page is a complete lie). I've also tested Steam by logging in and out about ten times tonight and joining about six servers - without issue

So it's a borked client on your PC a software conflict or a bug.

If Steam tells you that your e-mail is already in use then you did indeed register. And you do have an account.

What you also appear to have is a client that doesn't think it's registered and so hasn't updated properly and isn't sending valid user ID info. Therefore you should have this problem for ever unless you fix it.

If it's a norsed up registration try my post in THIS THREAD (http://forum.deadmen.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=3021)

If it's bugs then you're on your tod.

Likewise if you have an overly agressive firewall or an Anti-Virus called Norton...(spit   ) you may be in trouble. Turn off your firewall and buy a real Anti-Virus and test it again  ;)

If you had problems while first registering then you may have problems connecting.

Look here http://www.steampowered.com/forums/showthr...?threadid=13852 (http://www.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=13852)

I've not tried yet using another mail account yet because I don't have another mail account yet. If this turns out to be correct then it's a bigger steaming pile than I thought.

The steaming pile worked after registering again with a different mail address. How rubbish is that? Having to make another mail address just to register with Steam because it messed up the first registration. I guess I'm lucky it only took 2 mail addresses, I could have been at it all day using hundreds of them.

I joined MH to test and the graphics on Aztec look better. I'll see you all tonight.

I've been trying to register since Friday. I've tried various times of the day from 06:00am to 12pm.

Looking through previous posts I think I've every problem everyone has mentioned.

My Diary of woe:

Friday

I D/L the steam client from steam site installed got to the Email/name bit then it crashed. Then had the usual error message when tried to log back in 'Name already in use'. blah blah

Saturday

Trying to connect to steam, error message ' Either Steam server is down or check your internet connection.' I put this down to busy servers.

Sunday

Same message - Seems odd when many of the steam servers have spare capacity.

Uninstalled steam & D/L from Nvidia mirror. I'm desperate maybe corrupt syeam file.

Sunday night

Within 30secs get:
'Critical Error cannot connect to.'  Steam then crashes

Don't know rest of message its too long.

Rad has sent me the 370meg file.

Looks like I have a combination of a faulty registration for which I need to re reg with a different email add.
And I may have a bug/corruption problem...on the basis I can't even seem to connect to steam anymore at all.

So I wonder whether installing Rad's upgrade will work.

Rest assured valve have their 'crack smoking' team of drunken monkeys working on the next bug ridden steaming pile of shit.

For those who have had no luck, this means you can have no luck with a whole new version.

For those who got it working, this means as if by magic it will update itself, crash and not work, thus enhancing your steam pleasure.

Sorry to quote my own post, very bad form and all that, but I think I need to rectify a dodgy comment I made.

Steams News Site says the following

QuoteLogin Failures
September 17, 2003, 1:17 pm · Chris Bokitch
Some people might be getting the following message when attempting to login to Steam:

"Login to steam failed. Either the specified account does not exist, or the password was wrong. Please check your email address and password and try again."

This is a bit misleading - your account exists and is fine. The authentication servers are under heavy load right now. This problem should be resolved shortly. Thanks for your patience!

So it may well not be a damaged registration problem but just an overloaded server.
Or it could be both  :(

Doesn't explain why I've never seen it on my PC ? Maybe God loves me?
