Title: Google Chrome Browser
Post by: OldBloke on August 06, 2009, 06:37:41 PM
A new beta (http://www.google.com/landing/chrome/beta/) is out and, bugger, it's quick.

Now if only they could get LastPass working on it

Looking at it, I guess it's a free version of roboform isn't it? (in case I'm missing a goodie I should be using).

No it's a web browser :norty:

I run Firefox on three computers (two Linux and one Windows). For that I need a bookmark syncroniser that works on all three. So it's still Firefox and Xmarks for me.

However it's nice to see that Firefox has some competition at last. With Micorsoft effectively giving up on their piggy bloated IE mess, having a viable alternative to Firefox should keep both Google and Mozilla on their toes.

You back from holiday now then?

Last Pass for Chrome installed :)

One issue I have with FF is the constant attempts to install updates to addons etc.  Man I just want to open the browser and do what I want to do!

Chrome is light and fast so gonna give it another go :)

LastPass could be used with Chrome before, just not quite as easily as it is with FF or IE.

I've been using Chrome for ages now. Totally replaced Firefox for me. Only thing I really miss is Stumbleupon.

It's significantly faster and doesn't constantly want to be updated or restarted after an update etc.

The only program which is even close to firefox for intrusive updates is Adobe PDF reader. I find it so annoying I can't use it anymore and use FoxIt reader instead.

In the FAQ for the NoScript addon it is explained how you can manually configure the addon update interval: http://noscript.net/faq#qa2_6
However, as mentioned in that same text, for many addons an update means that a (potentially critical/exploitable/whatnot) bug has been fix, and this might really be something you would like to have updated as soon as possible.

I don't get the endless update problem with Firefox. I've set both it and the extensions to update invisibly so I only very occasionally get a request to restart. Also I can adjust the update settings in the Firefox preferences.

For me the most important thing is to be able to customise and build my own web browser. I can add the things I want and remove the things I don't. This makes web browsing a completely different experience than I would get with a take it or leave it browser like IE or to a slightly lesser degree Chrome. Granny is probably very happy with IE or a default install of Firefox but I don't think any browser will succeed in the long term for 'power users' like us  unless it offers the ability to fit the way we like to surf. Chrome is building up a nice set of extensions but it's not quite there yet.

However rendering speed is also an important feature so the moment Chrome is available on Linux and supports Firefox extensions, or more Google equivalents I'll be over like a shot :)

I decided to give Chrome another go (tried the Beta Version yonks ago) after having given up on IE8. Despite a new install of 8 on a 'clean' install of Windows7 it was taking 30+ secs to open the first page, no matter what settings I used.
Chrome was a revelation, fast install and first page there in an instant. :D

Indeed. I'm willing to give Mozilla my trust and allow them to update Firefox as and when they see fit without bugging me for permissions. There are very few other software companies I could say the same for. Linux Ubuntu and Avira Antivirus are about the only other two..... oh and Steam... that's three. Oh and World of Wrcraft makes four. Ok there are several companies that I could say the same for.  :g:

Well I've had Chrome installed since it was launched, but I haven't had a look at it for some time, so fired it up today to see where it's at. Still extremely fast!  I also liked the bookmark synchronising feature which appears to be new. :)

I'm becoming something of a convert to Google applications so the ability to make shortcuts to them (or anything else) to run in their own 'virtual' application window is nifty.

You can keep tabs on how it's coming along - apparently there's a Linux version available from the early access dev channel here (http://dev.chromium.org/getting-involved/dev-channel).
Title: Newest BETA and Extensions
Post by: Jabbs on December 28, 2009, 12:33:54 PM
The newest BETA of Chrome has a lot of extensions which are now a lot easier to install.  Simply visit the https://chrome.google.com/extensions page.  If you don't have the right version of Chrome it will tell you at the top giving you a link to download the correct BETA version.

Now I can use Last Pass and some other extenions (such as Brizzly) as easily as I did with FF and IE.

Go for Chrome! :D
