Ever feel like you're missing the time from when you were little and went on exiting treasure hunts and ran around discovering hidden places - and feel like you're perhaps a bit too old to spend your time on "childish" stuff like that now?
Well, here is the answer for you: Geocaching! The following is taken from the geocaching.com (http://www.geocaching.com/) website:
QuoteGeocaching (pronounced geo-cashing) is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure. A geocacher can place a geocache in the world, pinpoint its location using GPS technology and then share the geocache's existence and location online. Anyone with a GPS device can then try to locate the geocache.
I remember reading about this first time about a year ago, but as I didn't have a GPS at the time, I just thought of it as a funny thing. Just recently however, I came across another article about this and about at the same time I got my HTC Hero, which naturally made it a golden opportunity to try out something new. And I've always liked being out in the nature, so that part wasn't really new - but the added fun and excitement was really something :)
This is not something not limited for yourself and your "geeky" friends. In many ways this is the perfect family activity: Everybody gets out in the nature, with all the psychic and physical benefits that brings. Daddy gets to play with his gadgets (GPS, smart phones with cool applications, Internet in the wild and whatnot). The kids get to experience a
real treasure hunt - something that's way more exiting that the drag an ordinary family Sunday trip can be. And mummy gets to see lots of beautiful nature spots, as the caches often are hidden in special places.
I've only been testing this out for a week, and have this far found four caches in a not too distant proximity. The start has been quite fun, and in about a week I'm heading of to Berlin for a weeks vacation, and I'll definitely use Geocaching to try discover some exiting places while I'm there.
So all of you, head over to the Geocaching web site and read up about it. and if you already have a GPS available, just look up your home town and I'm sure you'll find something to start with not too far away :)
Happy hunting!
TomTom does not support/have the ability to go Geo Caching for the ones wondering..
Personally I like the idea a lot.. the site looks quite fun, and Ill definately try it out :D
