Title: Gainward geforce4 4400 suxx
Post by: smite on August 29, 2002, 06:50:19 PM
I bought the above said about a month ago and it worked fine from the off but when i built my new system and installed it i had problems getting an operating system onto it (this didnt have anything to do with the gphx card) so moved the GF4 back to my old system and bought a cheap one to put in the new system so i could get it running without changing over cards. after about 3-4 hours of doing usual stuff on the old system (surfing web) i started getting small yellow blocks all running down the screen, i rebooted and it just came up with numbers and charcters and wouldnt boot to windows, in the mean time i got an operating system to run on the new system so i swapped cards to see if was the old pc and the problem was the same.
I contacted Overclockers to return and they told me they were having probs with gainward cards and i had to contact them myself as they were doing the support for them. i had to send my card back and they would send me another one.

Got my new one today :D  guess fkin wat put in new card and woohoo it is good, install drivers "29.42" reboot yep you have guessed it the same fking problem  :x or not quite the difference this time is that it doesnt have any numbers or charcters but the same problem of yellow blocks and odd colours but this time it doesnt start at the bios screen it starts at the windows boot screen and hangs just sits there and doesnt do anything.
Gainward wouldnt shit em .......one very f00ked off smite

I know this for a fact on my card in any case (Geforce 3 Ti500 by Leadtek). DO NOT USE THE LATEST NVIDIA DRIVERS. THEY F**K UP YOUR COMPUTER!

When I went from 23.11 to 29.42 my FPS in Unreal Tournament (1280x1020x32, graphics at max) went from 150 to 12. Couldn't even start HL/CS and some other games.

My advice is throw those shitty drivers out and never install them again. Friends of mine have had a similar experiences and all run on older versions.

I have tried the older versions and still nothing.
But they were running fine on the old system for over a month.
BTW all protective gear and precautions were taken.

Just an idea...

In BIOS, try setting your AGP Apature to 64meg (no higher), I was told today it can screw stuff up....

Guarantee: This is not guaranteed to work at all...

-=This is an 18 certificate message please look away now if you are easily offended=-
Yeah i was going to mention them last night. they are supposed to increase performance by 25% wether this is true with games i dont know but on the forums i read 3Dmark2001SE scores jumped by 25% and more.
Still doesnt matter Coz i had to send this card back to Gainward in germany aswell. When i spoke to germany they said that the onboard memory was corrupt and for it to happen to both of them i was very unlucky so as soon as they recieve mine back they will send out ANOTHER new one. great wonder how good this one is gona be.
Anyway ive been looking around for a cheap but decent card to get me by as this hercules is doing my head in. i thought i had found a Geforce4 4200 64meg for £70 today but when i went to pick it up the dipshit didnt have a fkin clue wat the difference was between a 4200 and a 420. the fkin difference appeared to be about £80 usless TW@T so that was some wasted petrol anyway gona try and find one somewhere over the weekend to get me by.
Still F00ked off gotdamnmotherfkinuslessgraphicscardcuntenies

UPDATE:-

As im having problems with the cards Gainward are sending me their top range 4600 with some 3D Glasses or sommat (dont know anything about these i can only assume there must be some games that are in 3D)

Lets hope this one is OK

Just a quick question... does anyone know of a setting in the bios that could mess with the memory on the graphics card as i am not looking forward to putting in my new card in and seeing it do it again and then find out some component/setting is fking around with the memory on the Gphx card.
I have turned the AA to basic instead of 4X or 2X and tried the app size at 64 and 128.
It isnt doing it to the (crappy) TNT riva or the hercules 3D prophet but this is higher memory than these 2.

BTW the new PC is a:-

Athlon 2000XP
Abit KX7-333 MB
512 ddr pc2700 (samsung Ram)
1X 80gig & 1X40gig hd's (both ibm)
cheiftech case(black no catho)
Creative 5.1 SC

only put this info to :-
A) see if anyone knows of concerns with any of these components
B)Update my sytem spec

aperture size should really be set to half of your installed system memory so you should use 256 as your aperture. My mobo will only go to 256 but I have 786mb ram so I set the app to 256  -  I get 100fps easily in CS at 1024x768 and 32bit with OpenGL. ...and that's on a PIII 1Ghz with a GF3 ti200

bought a GF4 420 today for £45 just to put in my old system as the 3D prophet doesnt seem to like XP too much and i have to say for the price the card is excellant if anyone is after a cheap Gphx card this one is for you.
It is a Gainward one and it was from a comp fair but it still gave a 3D Mark2001 score of 4520 which is pretty darn good.
Hopefully should get my 4600 tomorrow  :D
