So its upgrade time, well almost but i like to do my research early. (4 months left roughly)
Currently i am on o2 carphone warehouse with a e51, 800 minutes and 500 texts for Ã,£15 per month via a redemption tariff
I would like to go for an iphone tariff instead of my redemption deal but to be honest the iphone feels a little expensive.
Is anyone part of a corp scheme i could become a part of or know of any cheap iphone deal sellers or do apple still run the show?
I understand its free on some tariffs but a 24 month tariff is a long time.
Thanks for your input!
As far as I know Apple keep things pretty locked down as far as deals go. If you want an iPhone you go to O2. However I've heard rumours that O2 will be loosing their exclusive deal at some point in the future.
However the iPhone is about Ã,£500 retail. So if a mobile network is giving you a free one they need to be sure you are going to spend a fair amount of money with them, hence high tariffs and/or long contracts.
Phew I managed to get that tped without trying to pimp the HTC Hero......
damn

No worries Smilo, I'll do that for you :flirty:
Seriously Ghosty, you can't honestly be considering an iPhone? Go take a look at the [thread=28056]HTC Hero[/thread] and see what some of us that recently have bought one think about it. I for one don't regret a single second, and with the OS upgrade that is right around the corner, it'll be close to perfect.
And if HTC isn't your cup of tea, Samsung has also just recently released their first Android phone - the Galaxy i7500 (http://www.samsung.com/uk/news/newsRead.do?news_group=productnews&news_type=consumerproduct&news_ctgry=mobilephone&news_seq=14500) - which I've also read some good things about.
Main thing: keep your mind open to Android, don't get locked in with all the rest of the iPhone clan (no offence meant to those of you who have one - but even for you, it's not too late to turn around ). As of today, I believe it is the strongest competitor to the iPhone (if not the only one), and with the freedom it offers you, there's almost no limit to what you'll be able to do!
HTC Hero, yeah the hero gives you more freedome, but be careful, its slower than the iphone, I did a load of tests with my hero vs mates iphone 3g, and the iphone was much quicker at running aps, has better graphics and larger screen...
The hero is cheaper by quite a lot but its not as good as the iphone...
Also I took out a plan with orange, with 'unlimited data', and by unlimited they mean 25mb per day max... sucks... where as the phoine data is actually unlimited!
The hero is very good! Consider it carefully!
I love my iPhone (and don't care that the rest of dMw hate it). :)
For me Ã,£30 p/m for 500 free mins 200 texts and unlimited data plus about Ã,£100 for the phone I believe
The iPhone is an awesome phone.
Yes it's a locked platform which could do with a few extras (Flash Player for mobile Safari would be nice), but it's just so easy to use and well thought out.
Oh, and the App Store is utterly brilliant.
I think with the latest updates of the os the speed issue is a non-issue. Hero is just as fast imo.
As for running apps, afaiaa Apple only runs a single app and shuts everything else, whereas the Hero can keep your contacts app open whilst you look at multimaps and the GPS - with the iPhone you need to write it all down :P
Screens - yes the Apple's screen is 0.3 inches bigger, but they both have 320 x 480 resolution so I would say the graphics are the same on both when I compared a Hero to an Apple.
When I chose my phone I had narrowed it to the Hero & the 3GS. I chose the Hero for the flexibility of Android and having had the phone for a while I am pleased with my choice. I have a SIM only deal with a stupid number of minutes & texts per month with what I consider to be unlimited data. Ã,£15 per month.

If you haven't upgraded the Hero ROM, that is worth keeping in mind. The difference is quite big, with the new ROM being faster and less system demanding.
iPhone rox.. everything else is a copy of the original.. My next phone will be an iPhone for sure
As you've still got a few months to ponder this, Ghosty, keep an eye on both the Sony Ericsson Xperia 3 (Android) and the HTC Leo/HD2/ProThree (WinMo).
They will both benefit from the experience gained from their forerunners and (particularly in the HTC) have much beefier hardware.
Hmmm, upgrading hte rom... I've only had it a week and havn't done much too it yet. Does it need to be rooted for the upgrade?

The 1.6 update of Android is mostly ready and can be installed manually if you look a bit around on the Internet. However, I don't think I'm much wrong if I say I've heard that you'll get it automatically pushed to your HTC in a matter of weeks (or even days), so you might just as well wait :)
Nope for the rom upgrade just install HTC Sync (http://www.htc.com/uk/SupportViewNews.aspx?dl_id=631&news_id=222), download the upgrade (http://www.htc.com/uk/SupportViewNews.aspx?dl_id=671&news_id=254), plug it in and off you go
:D
The 1.6 Android is, as Bob rightly says, not here yet. Although I like the sound of the over air upgrade....

Man, I must have been sleeping for the last couple of weeks (I
have been on vacation though), cause I was still waiting for that one
Thanks Smilo :D
Well I finally decided ony upgrade. Went for a iPhone in the end and it's awesome. I am actually using to reply to this post. :)

As I told you on MSN and steam chat the HTC is the way to go. I'm just leaving this here as an I told you so (not to change your mind as you've made the purchase). Especially with regards to the flash support you wanted apple isn't planning on supporting in whereas the Hero does. Again just saying. Having used a 3GS I'm sure you won't kick yourself, I just don't think you'll know what you're missing.
On top of that, anyone using a touch screen phone in 2010 should be on capacitive, so that rules it down to the iPhone or the Hero for the most part, the iPhone is a good step towards how a phone should be however so I don't think you'll regret it...happy 2010.
Way to go iPhone, double post :D
Seriously the only two issues I have with the iPhone is that
1. You have to use iTunes to get the most out of it, which is a shockingly awful piece of software on a Windows PC
2. It cannot multi-task. Smart phones have become mini computers and any computer that cannot have more than one application open at a time is functionally broken IMHO.
Still it's got a dream interface and thousands of apps to play around with (even if you can only use them one at a time  )
i must admit i have been tempted with an upgrade to a iphone but the money involved is imho far to much (yes i know i'm tight)
so the htc is better :eyebrow: which model are we talking ?

Right now? Hero.
After 5th Jan? Nexus One/Google Phone *
* the HD2 spec'd Android (might be a bit pricey tho')

Yeah the hero is what many of us have and screen wise it's the best competition for the iPhone. However as Oldie says several leaks (and an unspecified press conference by google) have all but confirmed the googlephone is coming out on the 5th. It's worth seeing the offering before buying a phone.
Having said that however it will only be available online direct from google, so I'm not sure how subsidies will work etc. Without them you're looking at upto Ã,£500 of phone.

:lmfao:
hehe.
You're right about the single application thing - it can be annoying (especially when switching between apps like co-pilot which take a while to boot up).
I don't have a problem with iTunes. It's ok once you get used to it - however I don't tend to change much at any one time with it. I guess if you're regularly changing your music etc then it could be a pain.
All-in-all though it suits me just fine :)
It's very much about how you grow into a smart phone. I don't (can't) play many 3D games on my Hero due to limitations running applications directly from the SD cards (enforced by the Android OS for reasons I don't fully understand). So I stick to Tetris and Solitaire. I'm sure iPhone users are zooming about in racing cars, speed boats and the like. However as I can jump back and forward between apps at will I've got into the habit of using information apps all the time when I'm out and about. iPhone users probably don't spent a lot of time using these augmented reality apps as the Apple OS stops them from feeding information back and forward between them.
Horses for courses.
This iPhone not being multitasking is confusing me a little.
Does this mean that you can't (say) listen to music and get route directions at the same time? This sounds incredible that you can't run more than one application at the same if it's true!
Even your basic mobile phones that have a radio for instance built in can also run other applications while you listen!
No I'm sure you can play music and type an e-mail at the same time on the iPhone. I am referring more to apps.
On the Hero I can have for example Google Maps, the web browser and e-mail all open and running at the same time. I can then flick seamlessly back and forward between them cutting and pasting information between apps as I go. So I can find a place in Google Maps, read a review on the web and e-mail the location to a friend. All the time I have my Bubble Baster game paused while I'm doing this.
On the iPhone I would have to completely shut down the game while I checked the web and shut down the web while I checked the maps. For some it's not a big deal at all and for others it's a complete deal breaker. It really depends on how you use a Smart Phone and the features it offers.
