Title: Server queues gone wild!
Post by: Luminance on September 27, 2009, 07:39:54 PM
It's now so bad, that they don't even allow you to stand in a queue no more!!! (for the past 45 min)

I mean, WTH!

I'm sincerely ****ed off now :ranting2:

Yep, even the queue has a queue now. Tbh if they dont make new servers soon they will loose a lot of players and i guess it will go the same way as age of conan which would be a shame really.

that's really a shame to be honest.

I would have expected better considering that MMORPG's are not a new commodity. Hopefully they can recover but this ins't the first forum I'm on that's going through the same discussion.

I can understand they want to make sure the servres become not underpopulated very fast, but not even be able to go into the queue(which is 2000 people). Thats is a bit stupid imo, specially since they knew the amount of pre orders beeing sold. NcSoft is not new to MMORPG so in my opinion they should have known better. I guess about 3 new servers will do it and lower the queues to about 15-30 min which is not bad taking into regards that a lot of people do not play anymore after their 30 days.

When your living in the same space as the behemoth that is WOW, it doesn't take much for your game to sink without trace. I'm thinking of Dungeons & Dragons - Stormreach, Vanguard, Age of Conan etc.

Although I'm sure they'll do a Penfold PR special again on why queues are great, this isn't going to do their cause any good at all. I was thinking about having a look at Aion. But this sort of launch mess puts me right off.

Ironically WOW had a pretty chequered early history. However no one cares now that their game is more or less rock solid. They have set a benchmark and sadly new games have to meet it from launch day or they're in trouble.

Considering the only issues are not having enough servers they are doing quite well, the game is solid and no bugs that i see. Although only allowing 2k people per server to queue telling the rest too many are connected so you cant play is just crazy. I'm sure they will resolve the servers issues by next week and will be a real contender to wow.

The game was delivered on Friday and the queue are the main reason i haven't installed it yet. I (and I'm sure others) don't have the luxury of wasting leisure time in a queue. :eyebrow:

I thought English people nicely stood in queues?

For the rest I agree with DA.

And that's my point. Aion may be a really great game. But if I spend my money and install the thing only to find out I can't actually play I'm going to be completely ****ed. And I'll just log back into WOW. I'll have a very negative attitude towards Aion and will be muttering all sorts of things about bloody robbers taking my money and giving me nothing in return etc etc. That's the the sort of thing a brand new game that's trying to get a foot hold in the genre can't afford.

It also seems to be completely self inflicted. Other games have had very strong starts. LotRO and Warhammer both had big and more or less problem free launches. Aion needed the same. I imagine that most of the reviews will focus on the queues and not the game and so many potential players may well think 'what's the point' I'll stick with my current MMO. I was going to get this game this weekend just gone. But why bother? I doubt I'm alone in that thought.

Argh!! again I can't even log in, hoped the queue would be an hour or less, so that I could actually play today. Socks big time. Hoped it would be a bit different, as its now a week day, and not weekend :'(
This is seriously costing us prepaid time so directly MONEY!

I spotted 2 new servers, BUT only 1 Eng speaking. So that won't be helping much.

edit: Position in line: 2538 ding ding ding, new record :'(

Are there any population restrictions on servers? Will i be able to start a character on our chosen server or is it full?

Not that it matters as my one of my raid hdds failed last night :(

Last night it said 1hour and 45minutes, it was about 30 minutes.
I just stayed in the queue and watched some tv.

As said, I just join when I'm back from work, it seems to do the the trick.

Queue's are getting less, peak time i only waited 20 minutes compared to a 2 hour wait last week. The games quite fun and its available in the stops, but make up your mind if you want and have the time for it.

Logged in, did the necessary Legion admin, started a party and got disco'd 10 miuns later to be told that I was now 698th in a 27 minute queue to reconnect.  Pass.  SO I logged WOW again.  Apologiers to my party, another of whom also got disco'd to join the queue.

Had a similar thing, was doing some quests which included some movies, on one of the movies it went boom and now in a 2 hour queue again. They should sort this asap and give the ppl a refund based on the time the problems exist. Just a bit annoyed at the moment that 5 of 7 days you cant play due to queues and the times you get in disconnects are a problem.

Greetings,

A lot has happened since I last addressed our community. Weââ,¬â,,¢ve launched our long awaited product Aion and have been pleased and challenged with keeping up with the massive player demand.

Thereââ,¬â,,¢s no doubt that weââ,¬â,,¢ve done some things very well with Aion: the product is polished and incredibly fun. We managed to deploy to North America and Europe within the same week and have experienced strong demand. As most of you are aware, this has come at a cost in the form of queue times. This is by far our biggest challenge and has led to some frustration as players wait to enter their server of choice.

In preparation for Aionââ,¬â,,¢s launch, we ran calculations of our presale numbers with historical conversion ratios and expected concurrency numbers, which led to our determination of launch day server needs. In addition, we had a 25 percent additional capacity in hardware reserve and the ability to increase server population. Weââ,¬â,,¢ve further responded to the overwhelming demand by adding additional server worlds in all languages, and still we are working around the clock to address the incredible demand. For example, weââ,¬â,,¢re seeing timeframes where 60 percent or more of our players are playing at any given time. This is a significant event by any MMO standard. Another surprising development is how long players are staying in gameââ,¬â€I think thatââ,¬â,,¢s a testament to the enjoyable nature of the product.

Iââ,¬â,,¢m sure many of you are thinking, ââ,¬Å"Thatââ,¬â,,¢s all fine-but how does that help me get in and play the game? What is NCsoft doing for me?ââ,¬Â Fair question. First, we have already and will continue to increase server capacity to ensure that we have server space for every user. The reality of the situation is that some servers quickly become very popular servers, with lines queued up to enter, but other servers have plenty of space to accommodate players. Obviously, adding servers wonââ,¬â,,¢t help in this case. If youââ,¬â,,¢re waiting to enter a full server, 100 extra servers wonââ,¬â,,¢t help.

So the next question may be ââ,¬Å"What about my character Iââ,¬â,,¢ve already spent time on?ââ,¬Â Another good question.  Iââ,¬â,,¢m excited to confirm that we are currently working on implementing a server transfer service beginning next month. Specifically, we will offer every player a free one-time server transfer for a limited time to select servers. You can rest assured that addressing the demand for Aion is our biggest priority. And I know a big question is ââ,¬Å"Why did you not deploy more servers?ââ,¬Â Most of you are savvy enough to realize that a healthy MMO server needs a robust population. We have to calculate our reasonable concurrency numbers in a week and in a month and beyond. The last thing we want to do to our players is spread them out so that the ââ,¬Å"massivelyââ,¬Â in ââ,¬Å"massively multiplayerââ,¬Â gets lost..

I read an interesting conversation about a safari hunter, and the question was posed to him: ââ,¬Å"Why donââ,¬â,,¢t you take an Olympic sharpshooter that could hit a bulls-eye at 300 meters?ââ,¬Â His response was: ââ,¬Å"I donââ,¬â,,¢t care what he can do at 300 meters, what can he do at two meters?ââ,¬Â And thatââ,¬â,,¢s definitely where we are now: the rhino is upon us. Weââ,¬â,,¢ve spent months planning and have researched multiple MMO launches, hoping to learn from previous success and failures. It is imperative to your long term enjoyment of Aion that we carefully manage the health of the servers. Weââ,¬â,,¢re looking at making sure the Abyss is alive with conflict and legions fighting for control in an EPIC war.

At this point,I would like to stress that you, our players, are our number one priority and that we are doing everything we can to ensure that Aion exceeds your expectations.

The community team and I will continue to provide you with progress updates as we receive them, and you can always continue to monitor issues, check on server status, etc. at http://www.aiononline.com.

In closing Iââ,¬â,,¢d like to say thank you to the worldwide Aion community. I am really excited about the response to Aion and I look forward to providing you with the best possible play experience for years to come.

Best regards,

Lance Stites

Well, as I said before, if a free transfer is offered then it is a valid consideration, especially if these queues continue.  Nearer the time we can run a poll and assess things more and then make a formal decision.  Good news ot see it being acted upon, even if it is not now.

If we wait for a week, after the transfers are open, then we might have a clear view if its needed to transfer, as a lot of others will ;)
