Title: To Make Steam Work
Post by: FBG on September 19, 2003, 09:19:19 AM
Basically it looks to me like the only reason people have had a completely nightmare is they have no faith in there install. The install is fine! the only problem is with valves registration server wich is down all the time.

I would suggest that once you've installed remember that it is fine and will work. You just have to have patience and keep trying until you get through to the servers.

1) if your registering a new account, only do this once! It will take sometime but once it successfully completes you will not have to do it again.

2) if it comes up with any error message, the SERVER IS DOWN. it is very unlikely to be anything wrong with your install. I forget the specific messages but i had, your not connected try again, and unrecognised user id. If you go into your steam folder and look at the log.txt file you will see at the bottom "could not connect to registration server" error messages. Just wait until it comes back on-line.

3) you double click steam shortcut. Steam doesn't appear and is showing in your taskmanager. Patience... it will eventually log you in. I kept killing the app, but i found out later its just a bit screwy and will eventually appear. If not kill it and try again.

When the servers were up i had NO problem at all starting a game... its just my impatience with not getting on straight away that makes you and i think theres something broken...its not...(of course valve is broken)

So i hope that installs some faith in those who have not made it on yet.

I used the dmw download steam full install.exe

My only problem now is meathook ignores my fing password. Ive delete blog file and restarted and everything, it wont let me bloody in.

cheers

ps. We shouldpost all the error messages people get and which ones to ignore.

All good and valid points - nice precis :)

I also find that the only way to connect to the hook is view server browser - the shortcut will not work. I have added MH and Balders to my favourites so they are easy to find and just accept that I'll have to type in the password :(

maybe in the future Valve will allow you to store a password against a bookmarked server in the same way that Serverinfo has allowed you to do for years

Are you trying in game or out of game?

I cant connect with the password either when looking at servers in game, but if i dont have cs running and connect from the servers tab at desktop i can connect.

Hope that made sense.

That works OK for me, as does server browser out of game. The only connection that doesn't work for me is the customised desktop shortcut :(

Well, it appears to be better in the morning?

I started up this morning to connect to work at about 7am and steam kicked in and started downloading updates at 1.2Mb/Sec

Perhaps their servers are starting to catch up?

Yup I think so too. In two weeks time we will not even remember the troubles we've had the last week. 8)

Not sure where to put stuff now. But. What has occurred to me is that for every problem with Steam, for it's Steam not CS that is the basic trouble, everyone has a different solution. Am I right, or am I right?

Right i'm seriously fecked off with steam now as i aint had a decent game of cs in about 2 weeks.  All i'm getting is the 'check your internet connection' message time and time again.  Has anyone had this message and managed to get rid of it?  Has anyone had any success with solving any of steam's problems?

Please let the rest of us know.

Btw.  Ayia Napa is 1 seriously good place to go on holiday, be you young, old, single or married.

it seems to happen when the server you are tryin to authenticate with is is either down or overloaded. I think it is a case of keep trying :(

I read somewhere that steam were limiting connection's to their server's by the i.p.  I.e, letting those with lower ip's connect first and blocking those with higher ip's, then slowly highering the low ip limit so eventually everyone will be able to use it.  It's some kinda way of limiting the number of people overloading the system.  Sounds like total BS to me, but i'm damned if i can find again where i read it.
