Title: Question about Windows 7
Post by: Azunai on October 17, 2009, 12:25:01 PM
Ok, so I realise Windows 7 has been around for some time now as a RC, and that there's tonnes of other ways to 'acquire' Windows 7, but since I'm not really into all that when it comes to OS's, I'm planning to purchase a copy of W7 once it hits the market. I have a question though: If I upgrade to a 64-bit processor, will my 32-bit Windows 7 still work?

I'm also looking for a standalone version... Via my uni I can get Ultimate for only 70 euro's, but it's an upgrade from XP/Vista. My current XP is ehh.. modified so it appears legal. Actually it is legal but it's not a standalone, so when I switched computers a while back I used the version that came with the previous on the new machine and downloaded this file that makes it run as if it's a standalone... So the next question is twofold: 1) Will the Windows 7 install notice that I have an XP that originally doesn't match my hardware, and 2) If I ever need to reinstall the OS, do I need to first install XP to upgrade it to 7, or will the Upgrade be able to do that alone?

If you are going to go Windows 7 then go 64 bit from the start, unless you don't have a 64 bit processor. But if that was the case and it was me, then I'd just stay on XP and save the Windows 7 install for when I upgraded the entire system.

As for the other questions, I'm not really sure. The only way to find out is to try it!

I checked and turns out I actually have 64 bit

Anyways after some reconsideration I might try and see if I can get my hands on a Standalone Professional version, depending on the price. Already seen Ultimate for around 300 bucks though so I sure hope my Uni will offer more types of W7 than just Upgrades ><

Right now as far as i am aware t-bag might know more but the vista cd's could allow you to install a full version of vista even though it was an upgrade cd.

Not sure if it contravened the EULA though.

I am getting an upgrade copy but i think its the full version as it says it needs to be installed as a fresh install without xp or vista just straight windows 7 pro plus it must be the E version i presume as i am in europe but we will see. Only paying Ã,£30 plus Ã,£9 for the cd so fingers crossed its something decent

Man Dutch version of Amazon (bol.com) is showing me about 500 different versions. Upgrades, DVDs in Dutch and English, seperate versions... driving me crazy @.@

But if I'm correct a standalone home premium edition will cost me 200 bucks >.<

I went for the professional 64bit version.

Ultimate was worthwhile with vista, but the gains for win 7 are minimal over pro.

Apperently its actually possible to enable XP mode in home premium, by adding a Windows XP pro key in a string in the registry.

Ill try to confirm this within the next few days when i get a day off

Is it even possible to add certian elements from higher versions of windows to a lower version? For example Windows bitlocker from Ultimate to a Premiem version ? obviously this would be at a cost if it was, just would be intresting to know more than anything?

My Windows 7 came with both 32 & 64 bit versions on DVD.
I changed from XP and had to complete a 'clean' install on my 'C' drive, but used Windows File Transfer to save settings etc. Took just over 30 minutes to complete and about 2 hours to install new drivers for various bits and pieces.:D
